Tobacco Journal. Oar market is just new one vast flood of joy. Every one who has tobacco of any description feels twice bis size. Even the dejected holders of '80 (Big Flats) State show a little glimmer of hope that their bottled up investments may, after all, be released some time or another without tee cruel a less. The discouraging news as te the '81 Kentucky and all cutting tobaccos, the rise in prices of old stock of this de scription, the suddenly increased expert demands, the great certainty that the yield of the '81 seed leaf crop will be no larger than its predecessor, and last, the continuing great activity among cigar manufacturers, combine te give our mar ket the'prcseut brilliant outlook. While conceding that some of the just cited fact have a justifiable bearing upon the market and its consequent enthusiasm, we cannot exactly see why any failure in the Kentucky crop should make the seed leaf market raise its ligurcs. At the best it can only make a better channel for the outlet of the trashy seed leaf stock, of which thcre is no great quantity, and ap parently will net be this month or next year. Certain it is, that we have no more mere seed leaf tobacco en hand than we want, and all indications are in favor of a rising market ; but why every holder should all at once consider himself an embryo Crcusus is hard te see. In another place we treat the subject of the possible limit of prices in seed leaf, which will be found closely con nected with the above review. The total sales of the week number about 1,500 cases of which COO were '80 Pennsylvania. The balance comprises small lets of nearly every crop, old and new. The quotations for '80 Pennsylvania this week aie Fine running (CO te 70 cases wrappers in 100 case lets), 19 te 20 cents ; medium, 15 te 17 cents ; low, 12 te 14 cents ; fillers, 7$ cents. Havana market very active The gen eral buoyancy in all tobaccemarkets has had its influence en Havana, and better prices are being paid. Total sales, 1,200 bales. The 1'hllttdeiplilii Market. Seed leaf packers and dealers claim business clcgaut, but question the propri ety of offering goods just new, as it leeks as if stock would be much higher this fall and winter ; they seem te think that if hogshead leaf is affected by dry weather, se will cigar leaf ; a very likely conclusion. Several large lets of new leaf have been handed ever te Western purchasers; one of our houses sold 179 cases of Duck Island, 1880 crop, this week te go West. Several lets of ether grades of new leaf have pass ed away from the city, all at profitable prices. Gaus' Rsperi. Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J. S. Gaus' Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending August 29, 1881: 1.000 cases Ohie, 5 te 12 lc; 300 cases 1879 Ohie, 0 te 13c. ; 4.10 cases 1880 Wisconsin, Havana seed, 12V te 1G : 300 cases 1880, Wisconsin, 5 te 10c"; 150 cases 1879 Pennsylvania, 19 te 40c. ; 40!) 1S80, Pennsylvania, 12 te 18c; 300 cases 1879 State Flats, 15 te 17c. ; 200 cases 1830 New England, p. t. Total, 3,105 cases. A W erm Promptly Named by Dr. Rath von. Fairfield, Aug. 25, 1881. Sin. S. S. Hatiives Devr Sir : I send by the stage driver a bottle containing a very curious worm. It was takeu from a persimmon tree ou the farm of D. L. Glackiu, and we wish youte give a de scription of it in the weekly Intelligen cer. Yours truly, David L. Glaceix, William M. Lee. Gentlemen : Your " curibns worm " was duly delivered te me as seen as it ar rived iu Lancaster city. It is the larva of the " Great Walnut Meth " (Dryecampa reffalis) or, as its European describer would have named it, the " Regal Walnut Meth.". It is fiequcntly found en the hickory and ou the persimmon in localities where tiiat tree abounds. When the larva is perfectly mature which occurs from the middle of August te the middle of September it burrows into the ground, instinctively going below the frost line, and there it is transformed into a large oval pupa, black or very dark brown in color. It forms an earthen cavity, but spin? no cocoon ; and there it hibernates during the winter, and its next evolution is a large aud splendid moth at some period iu the month of June in the follow ing year, according te the meteorological condition of the weather. The colors of the moth are ashen, yellow aud reddish brown. It is by no mcaus a rare insect, but is noue the less curious. The it erm is associated with the earlier recollections of my boyhood. Mere than sixty years age, in company with ether boys, we made a prematura raid ou a walnut tree, and while we were engaged "hulling" the wal nuts a very large specimen of this larva fell from the tree iu our midst and caused a precipitate stampede. It is very formi dable looking, but is entirely harmless. Its formidable actions arc all a sham and it can be handled with perfect impunity. It is found iu almost every state of the union.
