And the last two lines were as fellows : " Her father's hoof Hashed en the Nccne. I'm wiser new, and serer." Speaking of Mr. Ferbcs's lecture en " Kings I Have Met," a Western paper says that some day he will come across Unco kings and a pair of sevens, and then he will learn something about the really great resources of this country. She receives frequent messages from Washington, and spends much of her time at the front deer of the house, anxiously watching for the messen ger who brings the dispatches. She is bowed down with grief and sleeps but lit tle, and that in shot t naps. She is much agitated by fears of the worst, yet clings tenaciously te hope. It has been thought that transfusion of the bleed of a.healthy man into the veins et the president might possibly be resorted te as a means te restore his waning strength. It is net kuewn whether or net the physicians deem it possible that such an extremely delicate operation could be performed without still further endanger ing the president's life, but a well known gentleman from New Yerk lately arrived in Washington and volunteered himself as being ready and willing te submit te an operation by which bleed from his system could be transferred te the president's body. He had a consultation with Dr. Key burn, who said that the matter as yet had net been considered by the physicians, but that should such a ceurse be consider ed advisable his irenereus offer would be accepted. This gentleman is a fine, healthy person. " Themas, Cever Me Up." I It is said by an attendant at the White Heuse that during a former "night when " the general," as he is termed by the attaches, was wandering in his mind, he talked of many things concerning his boy hood days very incoherently at times, but with a pathos that was touching in the ex treme. It is said that restlessness at night was always a characteristic of Gar tield, as boy and as man. At night, when lying with his brother en their little cot in the contracted leg cabin, he would kick off the covers, turn ever and, half awake, say : " Themas, cover ine up." Twenty, five years after he laid down en the battle field with a distinguished officer. There was only one blanket between them. His eyes were hardly closed, when, as of old,he kicked oil the cover and turning ever said, drowsily : " Themas, cover me up." The officer covered Garfield up and in se doing awakened him and repeated the words. Then the brave soldier, the strong man, who had ridden through a rain of bullets unmoved, turned his face away and wept AUGUST 29. 1881. like a child, for he thought of his brother Themas and the days in the little leg cabin at home. The ether night in his delirium he murmured as of yore : " Themas, cover me up." The Trust Fund. The intciest en $123, 000 of United States registered four per cent, bends, at least, will be subject te Mrs. Garfield's order se long as she lives. If she refuses te draw the interest it will accumulate for her children, whose rights in the fund cannot be taken away from them by any power en earth. "ceT Columbia's Military in Camp. Correspondence of the Ixtkllicekcuk. Camt Gakpillk, 1Ii:D(uai:tki Ce. C, 1th KreT., X. G. 1 FmeAV, August d, IN;I. As the above company in the only mili tary organization in Lancaster county. I will give you a minute account of the company's trip, the location, &c. We left Columbia at S:30 p. m. en Monday. At Wrightsville we took en beard our train Ce. L, 8 Regt., and at Yerk Ce. A., S Regt. The scenery between Yerk and Ilarrisburg is very grand, especially where the railroad runs near the river, and heads wcie poked out of the car windows te see the sight. Wc arrived at Harrisburg at 10:45 the same evening, and there wc laid ever until 5 o'clock en Tuesday morning. Most of the men ran about the sticcts look ing for semcting te eat (and drink) till nearly train time. The ever variegat ing scenes between this place and Wilkcsbarre are simply grand. High and low mountains in every shape greeted our wondering eyes in every direc tion ; the river in some places is hardly as wide as our canal and is very low. Wc at last reached Wilkcsbarre at 10:30 Tuesday morning and from the e wc marched te our gamp, a distance of about a mile. .The situation is very peer and great dissatisfaction is expressed by mem bers, net only by our company but ethers. The ground is very hilly ; tents are pitched in the sun ; the water is warm and mud dy ; rations of the poorest kind ; and te put it in its ewu light a worse place could net have been selected. The duty and dis cipline are very strict and severe, and these who came along te have a geed time are greatly disappointed. Te show you what our duties aie I copy the following : Routine of Camp Duty Reveille (one uun), G a. in.; company drill, call, 6:13 a m.; company drill, recall, 7:15 a. m. ; breakfast, 7:30 a. m.; police call, 8 a. m.; surgeon's call, S:13 a m ; brigade guard mounting, 5) a. m.; battalion drill, call, 10 a. in.; battalion drill, recall, 11:45.; dinner, 12:30 p. ra.; brigade drill, 2:30 p. in.; dress parade, 0:30 p. m.; supper 7:30 p. in.; re- treat (one gun), sundown ; tattoo, 0:30 p. in.; taps, when all lights must be extin guished and silence reign throughout the camp, 9:13 p. in. Frem this you can perceive that wu have very little time te ourselves. Permits arc very hard te get, ;uid when your are lucky enough te get one, it is only for a few hours. Our men go te town whenever they want te, but always without permis sion. " Quite a number of our men have been sick, especially Mr. D. Mewcry, who has been attended by our regimental sur geon ever since we reached camp. The following regiments have been inspected: Nineteenth and Ninth regiments en Thurs day ; Eighth and Twelfth regiments en Friday; te-morrow the Fourth regiment and Battery A will be inspected. On Mon day we break camp. li:IJit-i. The ef&ccis of eii: regiment are hand some and thoroughly understand their business. Sir. Albert Rebctts, of our company, has been appointed drum major of the Fourth regiment. Wc have te call him Majer Roberts new instead of "Kahlcigh." While trying te steal through the night guard'?, J. R. Henry, of the Lancaster Kx. lumner, was c night and placed in the guard-house. The next morning hu had te pick stones as his punishment Company C made the best record at tar get pra ;tice en Thursday. Out of .sixteen shots we made an average of one. Large iron pipes are laid from the city te camp te supply ns with water. A brigade patrol is scut te the city every night, and it never comes back empty handed. We receive papers every morning and eeninir. On Wednesday wc called en the editor of tiie Wilkcsbarre LfnienJjSHiler, a very spicy and the only daily Democratic paper in Luzerne county. Wc find him te be a highly cultured and pleasant gentleman, and return our thanks for the kind man ner in which he treated us. Visiteis te the camp are few and !ar be tween. The crowds are net one-tenth as large as these that visited us at our camp at 1'airmeunt park last year. The Allcntewn ritlcs have tendered our company a reception at Allcntewn en our return from camp. Most likely it will be accepted. We hope se. If a soldier wishes te go te the city he has te walk, as there arc no hacks run ning. Wc lcceivcd cum and woolen blankets en Tuesday evening. Oh, hew het it is when wc go te bed at night ; but geed gracious, hew cold it is when wc get up in the morning at five o'clock ! Ne drunken soldiers have as yetbeen :.r reslcd. Every morning we receive gratuitously a large piece of ice. Huckster wagons are net allowed in camp, as all necessaries can be provided at the sutler's tent. Mr. Alexander had been a ruling member in church for fifteen years, having been elect ed te the effice at the age of 24 years, a remarkably earlyge te be called te se re sponsible position. The funeral was at tended by an immcuse assembly of people. The services were conducted by the Itev. Dr. Calviu W. Stewart, pastor of the de ceased, assisted by Revs. Samuel Dickey, and OrrLawsen, of Oxford, and Rev. J. N. Rcndall, of Lincoln university. The services were impressive, and the sad and tearful assembly indicated that the church and community fully realized the-great less they had sustained in the death of Mr. Alexander. At a recent congregational meeting the Union Presbyterian church elected four additional elders, viz. James S. Patterson, Washington D. Paxson, Francis N. Scott and Rebert A. Morrison. The erdina tien and installation of these ciders elect will take place in Union church ea Sep tember 4th. The Union high school, under its vet eran principal, James W. Andrews, A. IIe isabeutG5 years old, and though it is given out that he committed suicide, there are suspicions aihut that Sheridan is a victim of the graveyard insurance crazs. It is whispered that the old man was plastered with poli cies en his life amounting te upwards of one hundred thousand dollars, and there are districts in Luzerne county where ab solute brnkruptey has almost been pre cipitated by the demands made by the mu tual companies for assessments, and Pitts Pitts ten is one of them. His actions while there were such as te impress theso in charge of him that his malady was meiely supcificial and would net last long, and as time parsed he was pronounced cured. On Tuesday last his sister and a young lady te whom he was engaged went down te Danville te bring him home with them. While returning he chatted pleasant ly and when the train reached Nanticoke, about six miles below the city, and halted, he hinted that he desired te go iute another car and get a drink of water. Nothing was thought of the request and Lamercaux left them. When the train started again he was net in the seat, but the ladies thought that he would seen re turn. After traveling two miles, they be came alarmed at his absence, and made inquiries for him, when it was discovered that he was net en beard. The lady te hIieih Lamercaux was engaged faiuted, and great excitement prevailed. The con ductor, upon ascertaining its "cause, ran the train back te Nanticoke, but no traces of the missing man were discovered. The sister and sweetheart then returned with sirrewful hearts and sought the advice e friends. Their councils resulted in otter etter ing a reward of $75 for the apprehension of Lamercaux. Detectives started off te hunt him up, hisdead body was discovered in.the Susquehanna, near Nanticoke, and the theory is that he rushed directly from the train te the river and committed sui cide.
