T LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCEK. SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 1881. i . Eancastet intelligencer. 8ATDBDAY EVENING, AUO. 27, 1881 Grandmother Garfield. Hew She Fell a Victim te White Heuse Cookery The President' Dally Feed. A Washington correspondent relates the following : Intimate friends of the presi dent's household here speak of the affec tion between the president and his mother as something peculiarly touching and beautiful. The president was but one week installed in the executive mansion 'when his venerable mother, who had been present te welcome him within its thresh old, was taken very ill. The excitement and' ceremony attending even the first few days there were tee much for her feeble strength. A few hours after she com plained at all of feeling ill it alarmed the president greatly, and was the first worry that menaced the then envied occu eccu paut of the White Heuse. Medical aid was summoned, and but little hope was expressed that Grandma Garfield would recover, she seemed se utterly broken down. When the president came up te her bedside with a " Well, mother, hew de you feel?" she auswered him, "Se badlv, James, that I fear that I won't be lemr'with you." "Oh, no, mother," he .iiiintiv sifl "it. ik net as bad as that. .uw.j .w--j - --- -- Cheer up, the new president cannot part with his mother already." Very much te her own surprise, she rallied quickly, and in a few days she was talking about get ting away from the White Heuse " and out of the atmosphcreof the French cock ing." She used te say that fancy dishes would net help her any, and if she could only get home te her daughter in Ohie she knew they would give her some thing te cat, and she would seen get well agaiu. Heme-made bread, made by an old, uear neighbor, brought up te the White Heuse te her daily, was what, she insisted, built her up any way before she left for Ohie. The same repug nance te fancy cooking has always been prominent with the president. Ne mat ter of what the breakfast consisted at the White Heuse, he invariably ate a goodly portion of fried bacon every morn ing in the year, and at his dinner a piece of broiled steak would form the chief part of hiQineat diet. He has always been extremely methodical about his eating, and ence knowing particular feed agreed well with him, he did net ask for much variety in meeting a geed appetite. Even during the last critical days the old taste is displayed in the preference he shows for the old-fashioned milk porridge prepared by his wife and always a relished dish with him. Tarty Reorganization. Abolish Senatorial Delegates. Cambria Freeman. A geed many suggestions have been made bv a number of Democratic papers of the state in regard te the adoption of rules for the organization ei state conven tions and ether matters, te be prepared by the cemmittee of seven named by Mr. Dill, chairman of the state committee, at its recent meeting in Harrisburg. This is a most favorable time ler doing wuat lias been much tee long neglected, and the composition of the committee, which con sists of such well known Democrats as Wallace, Handall, liarr, Hcnsel, Myers, Uarircr and Whitman, with Mr. Dill as chairman, is au ample guarautcc that the Iutv imposed upon them will be well anu faithfully performed, and with true fidelity te the harmony and best interests et the party. Wc de net propose for the reason just stated te discuss at length the imcs Jens that will be considered by the commit cemmit cemmit teo, but will briclly refer te one of them.as we did a year or two age, when the Harris burg Patriot called attention te the sub ject. We agreed then with the Patriot and still agree with it in saying, that whatever necessity may have existed be fore the adoption of the new constitution for the election of senatorial delegates te a state convention, there is net a particle of reason for their election at the present time. Each county has new its separate representation iu the Legislature and as a necessary consequence its separate repre sentation in a state convention, and the original reason for the oxistance of a sena torial representation iu a state convention having fallen, the custom of electing them ought te fall with it. Senatorial delegates being therefore purely ornamental, the committee, we trust, will recommend te the Williamsport state convention that in the future they be abolished. An Absurd Panic. A young mau, while swimming from the west cud of Ocean Greve te Rosse's bathing establishment at the cast end of Ocean Greve, a distance of three-quarters of a mile, became exhausted and shouted for help. One of the bathing-masters put out into the surf in a beat and rescued the venturesorae fellow. The cry of " A man is drowning 1" created great excitement, and the people crowded upon the pavilion. In the rush a mau stepped upon a deg, which save a loud cry of pain. Seme ene shouted " Mad deg !" and a panic ensued. Men, women and children ran in all direc tions, a number crowding upon son;e chairs en the north side of the pavilion. Suddenly there was a loud crash and a portion of the fleer sank. Twe ladies fainted with terror, and for a few minutes 1 there was great alarm and excitement, it was ascertained that a fleer beam had snapped in two. Ne one was injured. The deg was kicked off the pavilion, ar.d the young man who caused all the trouble disappeared before his name could be learned. LANCAS1EK UOl'SKBOLU MARKET. DA1RV.
