FALL OF AN ELEVATOR.
' IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WORSE.'
Bat Baa Enough for Seme Who Bede en It.
About neon te-day an accident, which
might have been a great deal mere serious
than it was, occurred at the new tobacco
warehouse, ou West Lemen street, which
is owned by the Messrs. Bumganlner,
and is occupied by D. B. S. Kendig.
The building has an elevator in
the centre of it, which runs from
the third story te the basement and is
used for moving tobacco cases from one
fleer te another. After the meu who had
been working en the third fleer stepped
for dinner twelve of them heaided the
elevator te ride down. The names of the
party were as fellows : David Can, Frauk
Scheid, Ed. Hoever, Henry Caruthcrs,
David Hardy, Peter Wagner, Geerge
Carr, Scott P. Lytic, narry Kautz, Harry
Aument, Harry Kuhns and Ed. Beas.
They had just bearded the elevator when
it was started, and descended into the
basement with frightful rapidity, striking
very hard at the bottom, very much te
the astonishment of the men, who
weie thrown off iu all directions,
while some were injured. Scott P. Lytle,
living en Seuth Queen street, had a bone
in one of his ;feet broken ; Ed. Beas re
ceived a terrible cut ou the back of his
head and it was thought that his skull was
fractured : he was unconscious for a short
time, but when the physicians examined
him, it was found that his skull had net
been injured, but he had received
a slight concussion of the brain ;
liis arms were also bruised. He
was removed te the Black Herse hotel,
wheic he beards. Ed. Hoever, residing
ou Water street, had his leg sprained and
had te he removed te his home. Several
ether of the men weie bruised about the
arms and legs, but it is very fortunate
that none of them were injured mere sc sc
lieusly. Hew the accident occurred is a mystery
as yet, but probably the weight was tee
heavy for the elevator. At all events after
the accident occurred it was found that all
the cogs were broken from the small
wheels at the top aud a number were
broken from the large one. The long box
iu which the weight works was tein from
the side at the top. When the elevator
struck at the bottom the wire rope came
off the wheel.
WEDDING IN l.EWJSTOWN.

The morning papers have additional
paiticnlars te these published in the Is

town, Pa. yesterday of 3Iiss Esther Rus
.scl, well known in the social circles of this
city wheic she has visited her aunts, Mrs.
Hait and the Misses Mayer. The groom,
Mr. Harry J2. Coeke, is a seu of Mr. Jay
Coeke, the famous hanker, and is seen te
take clerical orders in the Episcopal
church. The wedding has been the theme
of social conversation for the past three
weeks in Lcwistewn. At precisely 11:02
the bridal party entered the room. First
in the line came six children drcused
iu while, and arranging themselves thice
en cither side formed an avenue for the
fourth bridesmaid aud groomsman, who
were followed by the third, second and
fust respectively, all forming a semicircle
with the bride and groom at the centre,
under a maguiliccut arch with a beautiful
horseshoe et white buds. The ceicmeny
was performed by Dr. E. W. Appleton, au
uucle of the bride. The groomsmen were
Mr. Dick Hewell, Mr. W. P. Stevenson,
Lieutenant Ficd. Coeke. ISth legiment,
regular army, aud Mr. Pitc Coeke. The
bridesmaids weie Miss. Bessie Myers, Miss
Miriam Weeds, Miss Mamie Coelce and
Miss Sallie Franciscus.
The bride's dicss was white satin dc
Lyen aud brocade, and her biidcsmaids
weie diessed in mull and Lice. She re
ceived ever eighty presents in all, the most
impeitaut and most elegant being a grand
piano from the groom's father, au elegantly
! engraved geld watch and chain fiem the
groom, aud a uue ebony cabinet, lliree
Ii:m:lseine heavily-ornamented clocks, six
dozen silver spoons, knives aud folks, one
cathedral clock, pair el crackle ware vases,
a solid silver tea service, together with a
large number of china ornaments, weie also
given, the newly married pair expect te
visit friends in Ohie, where they will ic
main for a short time. Then they will le
turu te Philadelphia, where they expect te
lefjide. Quite an amusing aud interesting
lealiuc was the cutting of a biidcsmaids'
cake iu which had been placed a geld ring,
it being supposed that the fortunate brides
maid would be married liist. The first,
second and thud with anxious leeks, half
in hope, half in fear, cut iu vain, but it
was lefx for the fourth bridesmaid, who
was tendered happy and enviable by strik
ing the geldeu hand.

A clear sky aud a dark night favored
the gazer at this new comet which ap
peared last night under the star Merak,
forming the northern lower corner
of the Dipper. It has been visible
for several nights after 9 o'clock,
and has moved slightly te the west of an
imaginary line drawn fiem the North
Star te the horizon. By looking carefully
at this point the observer will see two
tolerably bright stars close together and
isolated from the ethers. The one te the
right is the comet, while en the ether
hand and a little above, Merak burns
mere steadily, but scaicely as brightly
as her inconstant companion. The dim and
tenuous tail is discovered after a moment,
though it is net conspicuous, but an opera
glass.brings it clearly.inte view. The direc
tion of the tail is away from the sun, that
is te say, upward from and te the right of
the coma. Star-gazers should fellow the
trick of astronomers of pointing their
glasses a little te the right of the comet,
aud gradually change the direction of
Umj glass until the luminary is brought
within view. The astronomers' saying
that there is no accounting for comets is
efteu verified by the seemingly inexpli
cable bodies in their development and
decliue, aud while the new comet is said te
be traveling away from the sun and earth
at the uncompromising speed of 5,000,000
miles pei day, it is net certain that it will
net at any time within a day or two burst
forth with unlooked-for splendor and brilliancy.

LANCING THE GLAND.
ANOTHER SURGICAL OPERATION.
THE PRESIDENT BEARS IT BRAVELY.
GENERA I, CONDITION UNCHANGED.
A Fair Repert This Morning.
Executive Mansion, "Washington, Aug.
24, 8:30 a. m. Official The president
has passed a very geed night awaking at
longer intervals than daring several nights
past. He continues te take liquid feed by
the mouth with mere relish and in such
quantities that the encmata will be sus
pended for the present. Ne change iu the
parotid swelling. The ether symptoms are
qnite as favorable as yesterday. Pulse 100,
temperature 98.5, respiration 17.

A Slight Rise In Temperature.
Executive Mansion, "Washington,
Aug. 24, 12:30 p. m Official. The presi
dent continues te take liquid feed by the
mouth as reported in the . last bulletin.
His temperature laB risen slightly since
that time. In ether respects his condition
is about the same. Pulse 104, tempera
ture 99.2, respiration 17.
Signed D. "W. Bliss,
J. K. Barnes,
J. J. "Woodward,
Robt. Reyburn.
Secretary ltlalne'a Dlipatch.
"Washington, Aug. 24.-r-The following
was sent this afternoon :
Te Lewell, Minister, Londen :
According te the opinion of his physi
cians there is no marked changn in the
president's condition since last dispatch.
At this hour (half-past 1 p. m.) tliere Is
seme indication of an increase of fever
which they say is in part caused by the
increased heat of the day. He continues
te take liquid feed and does net seem
troubled by nausea or indigestion.
Signed Blaine,
Secretary.
The Swollen Gland Lanced.
Executive Mansion, "Washington, D.
C, Aug. 24, 1:45 p. sr. Unofficial.
Since the neon examination the surgeons
have lanced the president's inflamed
parotid gland aud liberated a small quan
tity of pus. The patient did net take any
stmesthetic and did net seem much weak
ened by the operation. His pulse imme
diately atterward went up te 115, but seen
receded, and is new 104. Dr. Reyburn
says that the results are entirely satisfac
tory, and this information is confirmed ly
Dr. Hamilton.
Tne Operation.
Executive Mansion, "Washington, D.
C, Aug. 24, 2:15 p. m. Unofficial. A
careful examination this morning con
vinced the surgeons that pus had already
begun toferm in the parotid gland, and as
the patient's condition was satisfactory it
was decided te make an incision immedi
ately after the morning examination. The
operation was a comparatively trifling one,
and was performed by Dr. Hamilton with
out the use of anaesthetics, local or gen gen
eral, but with anaesthetic precautions in
the shape of a carbonic acid spray. The
cut was made just under and forward of
the right car, and resulted iu the liber
ation of a small quantity of healthy pus
estimated by Dr. Bliss te be about
equivalent iu bulk te two medium
sized peas. The patient's pulse
went up te 115 immediately after the
operation, but seen began te recede, and
in half an hour had fallen te the point at
which it steed when the examination was
made for the neon bulletin, viz., 101.
Ne Partner Glandular Trouble Feared.
The patient is new resting quietly, and
his general condition is in no respect werse
than before the incision was made. It is
thought that there will new be no further
treuble with the parietid gland, since if
mere pus forms it can readily escape
through this opening.
The patient has swallowed te-day about
fourteen ounces of liquid feed, consisting
principally of Beef extract, peptenized
milk and milk porridge. At this hour he
continues te de well.
HANCOCK ON ARTHUR.
His High Estimate et tbe Tiee President.
Bosten, Aug. 24. In the cars en his
way te Portland Gen. Hancock was asked
his opinion of Gen. Arthur and with much
warmth replied that he was au able, pa
triotic, high-minded gentleman, and iu the
event of his being called te the chief mag.
istracy would discharge the duties with,
but one (purpose that of benefiting the
entire country and that the people might
rely en his judgment with absolute confi
dence. AN IMPORTANT OPINION
Fer the Consideration of Government Con
tractors. Washington, Aug. 24. Judge Law
rence, first comptroller of the treasury,
rendered a decision te-day, in which he
maintains that if a contract with the gov
ernment is sold by the contracting party
the contract itself is annulled and
that any person or party selling such con
tract runs the risk of obtaining no pay.
The opinion is based en the ground that
the original contractor in such event does
net perform the service and that the pur
chaser of a contract violates existing
laws.
