A Yentlr from Chicago.
"Perhaps," says Bill Nye, " no surging
sentiments of pity haye stirred my very
soul during my official career like these
that throbbed wildly athwart my system
a few days age. It was a case of the most
bitter disappointment of a young life. A
youth from Chicago came te me near the
close of the day. I was just about te lock
up the judicial scales for the evening and
secure the doers of the archives prepara
tory te going out and ' shaking ' the mayor
for the lemonade, after which I intended
te breathe in a little fresh atmosphere and
go home for dinner.
' It had been a hard day iu the temple of
'iustice that day, and the court was weary,
it had dealt out even-handed justice at
regular rates since early morning at se
much per deal, till fatigue was beginning
te show itself in the lines upon that bread
white brew. Therefore, when a halting
step was heard en the stair, there was a
low murmur en the part of the court, and
a half-surprised mean that sounded like
the tail end of an affidavit.
"The young man who entered the hal
lowed presence of eternal justice and the
all-pervading and dazzling beauty of the
court in its shirt sleeves, was of about
medium stature, with shoes cut decelcttc,
and Reman striped socks clocked with
brocaded straw-colored silk.
"He were an ecru-colored straw hat,
with navy-blue brocaded band and neck
tie of old geld, with polka dots of hum
bcrta and cardinal, interspersed with
embroidered horseshoe and stirrup in
couchcrde helcil and ultramarine. His
hair was dark and oleaginous, and his
shirt was cream-colored ground, with
narrow baby-blue stripes, cut-away cel
lar and culls that extended out into
pace.

" But all ever, and pervading the entire
man, was the leek of hopelessness and
corroding grief. With all his geed clothes
en he was a hollow mockery, ler the eyes
were heavy with wee.
" The nese also was heavy with wee.
" This feature, in fact, was mere ap
propriately draped in token of its sadness
than any of the rest. Few noses are se
expressive of a general and incurable
gloom as this one was. It had evidently
at one time been a glad, joyous and
buoyant nese, but new it was despondent
and low-spirited.
"There was a leek of geneness and utter
desolation about it that would stir the
better impulses of the most heartless.
"The featuic had evidently tried tocen tecen
tralizc itself, but had failed. Here and
there narrow strips of ceuit plaster had
gene out after it and tried te win it back,
but they had net succeeded
"I said, 'blister, there seems te be a
panic among the component parts of your
nose. It's none of my business, of course,
but couldn't you get a brass band and call
it together? Then you could held a meet
ing and decide whether it had better re
sume or net.'
"The ycntlcniaii from Chicago went
through t!ic motions of wiping the wide
waste and hewliug desolation where his
once-joyous nose had been, and then, put-,
ting away the plum-colored silk handker
chief with the orange border, he said:
" 'Suuiic, I have been grossly deceived.
Yeu see in me the victim of a base mis
representation. In Chicago this season of
the year is extremely unhealthy. The in
tense het weather carried away the inno
cent and the geed, and I feared my turn
would conic seen. I heard of the salu
brious clinic of your mountain city, where
the days are tilled with gladness and the
burning heat of the mighty city by the in
land sea never comes. I came here two
brief days age, and you can sce with the
naked eye what the result has been. It
is net gratifying. The climate may in the
abstract be all right, but there are certain
sudden and wonderful atmospheric changes
that I cannot account for, and they are
very disastrous.
'I was sitting in a Seeend street sa
loon te-day, talking about matters and
thing, when the conversation turned upon
physicial strength. One thing led te an
other, and finally I made a little humorous
remark te a young man there, which re
mark I made in Chicago many times with
out disastrous results, but the air clouded
up all of a sudden, and in the darkness I
could sec Reman candles going off. and pin
wheels, and high priced rockets, and blue
lights, etc.
" 'Shortly after th.it I gathered up what
fragments of my face I could find, and
went down te the doctor's office. lie
held an inquest en my nose, and I paid
him for it. I shall go back te Chicago to
morrow. I shall net be as handsome as I
wss, but I have gained a geed deal of in
formation about the bread and beautiful
West which is priceless iu value te me. '
" All I wished te say was ibis : If you
see fit te mention this matter te the pub
lic, teue it down as much as possible, and
say that for a bilious, nervous tempera
ment pcihaps the air heie is tee bracing. '
"I have considered his sensitive feel

count in fair and impartial tones. "
