LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCES WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 1881. -, t l ' - - -- - - x Lancaster fntelliaencer WEDNESDAY.EVENINQ, AUG. 17. 1881. A Queer Pet. The Odd Ways of Tme Crew True te we jrmuy h A writer in Chamber? Jenrnal says : Of all our pets among the land birds, I select for special notice th heeded crew. He is net a beautiful bird certainly; fcut i. maires ud for his net handsome appear ance, by his exceeding cleverness. Wei , - .:.... I-- 4- ..... wntM TVef uau one m iruiiiuu jmj jv.. nw called him Crabbie because of his side long mode of progression when net en wing. Uis liberty was seldom restricted, unless he had been guilty of some prank mere than usually audacious, and then his punishment would be a day or two's confinement, which he greatly hated ; but he seen managed te coax us into giving him his freedom, and manifested the ut most gratitude te his liberator. His moral sense was at least as obtuse as a cat's. IIe delighted in stealing, simply as it seemed for its own sake, net because he could make auy use of his plunder. Spoons, needles, wires, pirns of thread, balls of worsted, little ones' shoes and socks, anything and everything that was portable te which he could get access, he would carry off, and carefully hide, covering tlicm ever witn mis ei tun; and then wiping his bill, in the most self satisfied manner hop away as though he had norfermed a highly meritorious action. Alas for the half-knitted stocking which might be left en a chair or table, if Crabbie waB about ! The wires would be quickly pulled out and removed and the stockings tern te tatters, i caugiit uira one uay and an intensely droll ligure he cut hop ping out of doers with a pipe in his bill. On another occasion he made off with a piece of tobacco. We never could make out whether he had auy intention of him self trying the seething effects of the weed. He had, or affected te have, a great dislike te bate feet, aB the little boys who efteu came te the house with baskets of Hillocks or with messages, had but tee geed reason te knew. On the whole he was en terms of very geed friendship with dogs and cats; but it always afforded him exquisite de light te tease them, particularly te pinch the point of an outstretched tail, if the owner thereof happened te be asleep ; and a pinch of his tliarp and powerful bill, whatever pleasure it might afford him te inflict, was no joke te his victim. Once au old woman was bringing a mes sage te the house. Just as shs was cross ing a stile, Crabbie's quick eye fell en the spotless cap which adorned the old body's head. It was an opportunity tee tempt ing te be resisted. Down he swooped, neatly plucked off her head dress, and with a triumphant " Cra, Cra," flew away with it. Net being aware there was any such "uncanny brute" about the house, her consternation may be imagined; and when she appeared at the back deer bereft of her white muslin mutch, and told, iu tones of horrified agitation, hew she had been despoiled of it by a "craw," she met with much sympathy from the domestics, who hated Crabbie with a most perfect hatred. And little wonder they hated him, for he teased and tormented them unmercifully, and by his never-ending tricks often im posed upon them a great amount of addi tional weik. Fer instance, clothes en the bleaching green he seemed te regard as spread out for the upccuil purpose or af fording him au opportunity of showing hew completely he could soil them. At any rate, what he did, whenever he get the chance, was te march and hop all ever them in the most systematic manner, with the dirtiest effect. What I am about te relate will appear e many incredible ; but having frequent ly witnessed it, I can vouch for its accu racy in every particular. Our old cook was an expert dresser of the fine Shetland shawls se well known and se much prized. It is quite an accomplishment te be able te dress these delicate fabrics, and none but a Shetlandcr can de it properly. The shawl, having been washed aud slightly starched, is Stretched ever the bleaching green, a few inches from the ground, with a multitude of wooden pegs like pencils, and allowed te dry in the sun. Crabbie would sit en some wall at a little distance, intently watching the proceedings of the old cook, who particularly detested him, and with whom he had a standing feud. Then he would fly off, and pieseudy re turn with the vary lilthicst and wettest clod he could find, and of a set pur pose drop it Mpen the outstretched shawl, thereby lousing the indigna tion of peer Meggy, who gave ex pression te her wrathful aud outraged feelings in lauguagc much mere forcible than choice ; all which did net iu the least affect Crabbie or disturb his equanimity. In these ways, however, he get te be such a nuisance that it became necessary en bleaching days, or when a shawl was being dressed, te make riM he was net at large, else. the bleaching or dressing was certain te prove labor lest. But then he seen get se exceedingly cunning and adroit iu avoiding capture that it was often impossible te secure aud confine him. At last, as we could fall upon no plan of curing him of his thievish and mischievous propensities, we were obliged, most lcluctlantly, te part with our peer Crabbie, who was sent te a friend iu the Seuth. m LANCASTER HOUSEHOLD A1AKKKT. daii-.t. Slaymakcr, Agent for Eeigart's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who has extensively usee the Brandy referred te in his regular prat ti i It is commended te the attention of these a' nlcted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te bt used as a medicine of great potency in t ln en re of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victim. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the faverable notice et invalids espe cially theso afilicted with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a spccillc remedy, which 13 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with feeble appetite anil mere 01 less debility, will find this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their Ills and aches. Be It, however strictly understood that we prescribe aud us but one article, and that is REIGART'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young triend, II K SLAY'MAKER. Tills Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as fai as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preterence ever all etner Brandies no matter with hew many jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various Impotent dyspepsia specifics would huIMce te buy all the Brandy te euro any such cise 01 ases. In proof of the curative powers et Reigart's Old Branay, In cases of Dyspepsia, we can summon mini bcrs of witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working farmer had been afllieteu with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ter a number of years; his stomach would reject almost everj kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, ami then, as new S reached at times, and in his discourses elten cclaimcd earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te trv Reisrart's Old Braudy, In his case, lie looked up with astonishment, but after hearing et its wonderful etleels in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, Ik at last consented te fellow our advice. lie used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man, will, a stomach capable of digestingany thing whic!: liejchesc te eat. lie Htill keeps it and uses a lit lit tle occasionally; and since lie has this liieili cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene lit te the doctor.
