Intelligencer."
A trip through the southern end of this
county at this season 01 me year proves
te be very interesting indeed. Leaving
Christiana, along the old "Valley" or
" State " read through the Nine Points
and into Bait and Colerain townships, you
pass through one of the finest sections of
our productive county. Here can be
found some of the best of her farms, and
her irest experienced ftrmers ; and
home of the old landmarks. Yeu pass a
number of Old stone dwellings, some cov
eted with plaster, ethers with their ex
posed stone, showing the geed masonry
that was dene in ye olden time. The hotel
at Nine Points leeks as if it was at least
one hundred years old, and the Red Lien
en the "Valley read," for ever eighty
years, has opened its deer te the weary
stranger, but it never "had af mere genial
host than Mr. Albright proves te be. Old
stone barns and houses can be seen that
will equal if net surpass these te be seen
around Quarry vi lie, where that edifice
known as " the Ark" is about celebrating
its centennial. v
Frem the " State" read across te the
Octoraro creek, which divides ours from
Chester ceunty, the land is geed a plenti
ful harvest is with rare exception gather
ed by the sewer. Lying in the valley it is
watered by the Octoraro principally and
its west branch. It is a beautiful strip
of country. The section compos
ing Colerain and Bart, and im
mediately around Kirk weed and Union
is settled mostly by Scotch-Irish descen
dants, of that geed honest stock, and as
hospitable as honest. Such names as the
Harrars, Heggs, Galbraitus, Whitcsidcs,
Cellinses, Honeys, Stcwails and many
ethers, embrace all the features of the
model farmer hospitality, heucsty and
experience. The wheat crop this year
has been ;;oed iu tlib section, as
also the eats, but iu oine sections
the corn is thin," yet nel a failure, due
te the dry weather. The farms average
near oue hundred and twenty or thirty
acres apiece, while seme hare ever two
hundred. But large or small, en all you
notice evidences of thiilt uud success in
farming the foundation of civilization.
There are several productive dairy farms
iu Colerain that send te the Philadelphia
and Baltimoie markets huudreds of pounds
of butter weekly. The Heggs are the
most experienced dairy men, and it is a
pleasure and a profit te visit their dairies.
Thursday was " churn day " at Rebert
Hegg's aud we took advantage of it te pay
our premised visit. Everything about
the dairy is cleanliness aud order. Mr.
II. has at prcscut about thirty
five fresh cows ; he is also raising a num
ber of line young calves. This has been
his business for ever thirty years and from
it he has made for himself a line fortune.
In all that time he has sent te'the Balti
more and Philadelphia markets tens and
tens of butter. It is interesting, indeed,
te visit the dairy and have him tell you
"all about it." Aiterspcakingef his suc
cess as a cattle raider, and showing us his
fine sleck, he took us te the spring house.
This is a large building bountifully
supplied with cold water from
a spring jtu.t eutside its walls. The lloer
is laid out in what reminds you of ave
nues of i mining water. 'lucre are four
streams ; between each are elevated walks
spanned by miniature bridges. After
milking, the lacteal lluid is poured into
shallow tin buckets, te a depth of perhaps
C or 8 inches, and left stand te sour, a
small quantity of sour milk is put in each
can te quicken the preqess aud form its
cream, They have two churnings each
week, CO te 73 pounds being made at each
churning. Mrs. IIej;g superintends the
meulding, all butter made here being
cast into half pound lumps, and all of it is
shipped te a prominent commission heuhe
in Baltimore.
" Is there a great cctnand at this sensm
of the vcar for butter, equal te that of any
ether?" we asked.
" There are seasons,' Mr. II. answered,
" when the demand incicascs or diminishes
we get thitty cents per pound for all the
butter we ship. It is put tip in tubs
packed iu ice. This is the season when
butter is very much iu demand. In the
spring, it Talis oil', mostly due of the arrival
of fresh lish en the markets."
Te the question "What was the
highest price you received for butter
during the war?" Mr. II. said that
in March 1804, he received 90
cents per )euud for butter by the box
of a hundred pounds or mere, and the
lowest, was in March or April, 18G2, when
he only received 20 cents a pound. He
said also, that when the war was iu pro
gress it was very troublesome te ship but
ter, and that many tubs were lest by de
lay iu the railroad companies' failure te
run regularly or make connections.
All the surplus milk from which the
cream is taken and ail the buttermilk is
fed te the hogs, and Mr. II. has a great
number of nice swine, together with- four
litters of pigs. His pig-pen, like every
house en the large farm, is complete iu all
its requirements. Abeve are large bins of
feed which is transmitted te the troughs and
feed boxes below by tubes. Everything
denotes experience and economy, and it
has been these two characteristics together
with business tact that has made Mr. II.
the man of prominence and means that he
is te-day, and it is these that are charac
teristic of all the people iu this section
old Democratic Colerain, the banner
township of Democracy.
And, Mr. Editor, I cauuet close this let
ter without speaking of the nice httle vil
lage, Ivirkwoed, small it is but a very
pleasant place. Fer some time it has
borne the enviable record for De-
mecracy, tnat lucre was " but one
Republican in 'the town," but this will
seen be an idle jest for " the blacksmith "
will be reinforced with the grocer
and they, tee, shall wage war for Re
publicanism. Yes, Mr. Turner, who has
kept Jtfce Kirkwood store for years aud
kept$t'' well, leaves for New Londen,
Chester county, and Mr. Truman, of the
Union, takes his place. It is a fair exchange
but it adds oue for the opposition.
Sid Nal.
Providence Pickings.
Tne eats harvest is new finished and the
farmers expect a geed yield.
The corn crop is net expected te be very
large iu most places en account et the con
tinuous dreuth. The tobacco in some parts
leeks very well ; some of the patches
are of the finest growth ever seen
in this section of country. Seme of the
growers have commenced te cut aud put
away fine grown weed. B. F. Werth cut
off a stalk from his patch, which had
ten geed leaves, measuring from 9 te
42 inches in length aud from 19 te 24
inches wide. There is a geed ameuut of
the same patch that will de as well if net
better.
The Church of Ged iuteuds te held a
campmeeting, commencing en the 27th of
August and te continue for ten days, in
the weed of Witracr Barge near Fairview
Bethel church in Providence township, en
the read leading from New Providence te
the Buck, where it is expected a large as
semblage of people and preachers from
various denominations will be present.
Aaren Kunklc was iiaulir.g weed with a
colt hitched te a ca:t ; in going down hill
the weed slipped forward aud struck the
colt and it became, unmanageable and ran;
Kunklc held en for some distance, and
finding all in vaiu, let go and fell, and the
cart wheel ran everSiim, net doing bim
any injury. ' The colt made for . a
pair of bars that were closed ;
they thought that would step his speed,
but it never checked the colt nor the cart.
It ran through the weed of Jeseph H.
Lemen, en an old by read te the Unicorn,
whcie the team was caught by II. N.
Eberly. Ne damage was done except the
bark tern off of one tree.
