Tke Tobacco Market.
Seed Lear sad Havana for the "Week Kuding
Saturday, August C, 10 A. M.
U. S. Tobacco Journal.
The great activity of the past two
months has at last given way te quietness.
During this week there were hardly any
transactions of note. Our large manufac
turers, who, "by their extensive purchases
of '80 Pennsylvania, actually drove every
ether '80 crop into oblivion, are at present
out of the market. The unprecedentedly
large orders for cigars early in the season
had a great deal te de with their purchases,
and i.ew that the busy .season is drawing
te a close, investments in leaf are net be
ing made. Most manufacturers are of the
opinion that the winter season will be as
brisk, if net brisker, than the one new
waning, and that investments in leaf
will then take a fresh start. Seme of the
holders of ether '80 crops are sanguine
that then the craze for Pennsylvania will
have died out, and that manufacturers,
seeing their felly, will make a grand rush
for the neglected, but deserving Connecti
cut, state etc.
Purchases of the '81 Pennsylvania are
taking place already, but in studied se
crecy. The se well planned corner that
exploded by becoming public (and this
paper was the only one in possession of the
facts) has new dwindled into secret pur
chases by the promoters of the scheme.
Every one of them is trying te keep his
movements in the tobacco fields of Penn
sylvania as secret as possible, se that his
example shall net induce a tee rapid in
flux of competing buyers. Certain it is
that the '81 Pennsylvania crop will be
bought up very rapidly, and that there
will be mere buyers iti and around Laucas
ter than ever before.
Outside of a sale of about '2i)0 cases of
low '80 Ohie, for expe.l, at about 5 cents,
we note sales of 450 casus '?! Pennsylvania
at 35 te 43 cents for wrapper.-, 251 cents for
line running lets, and 7-V coats for tillers.
There were also sales "of 150 cases '79
Connecticut wrappers, at 2C cents.
Havana Market very autive. Sales
1,200 bales, mostly '80. Manufacturers
were the maiu buyers. Piiee3firm.
Sales or Seed Leaf in July.
Tobacco Leaf.
The sales et t,ccd leaf in the New Yerk
market in July wcre less than these in
June, but large transactions in the aggre
gate were, nevertheless, effected in the
past mouth. In June the total sales footed
uji 17, ISO cases, and in July 10,479. Man
ufactuiers were liberal buyers in July, es
pecially of 1880 Pennsylvania leaf, taking
of the C,000 cases of that sort sold about
one-third, dealers appropriating the
balance. Manufacturers were also free
buyers of New England leaf, as usual.
The demand, as will be seen below, cm
braced all available growths, namely, 1879
and 18S0, and varieties, with fair transfers
of Wisconsin, Ohie and New Yerk, Ohie
alone having been taken for expert, in
which department but little con
tinues te be done, owing te the
firmn-sss of prices. It would be
well, it may be remarked here, if holders
could see their way m some way te at
tract exptuters. In the visible supply of
stock there is a considerable quantity that
is well adapted te the want of foreign mar
kets and of little use here. This surplus
will be taken abroad if offered low enough
but net without. If it be se managed
between new and January that a geed ox ex
ort trade shall be had. the season will
end, speaking figuratively, in a " blazs of
glory."
The expert of seed leaf and cuttings
since.lati. 1. 1881, was 10,41):' cases ; same
time, 1880, 12,'JOO wises ; same time, 1879,
6,330 cases.
