OK THE SHORE.
Thrown backward from the rocks that gloeui
where lies
A battered bulk, the bright waves nasb and
loam,
Anl o'er the sunken reefs the rollers comb.
While lar along the wind their light spray
flics.
Great ships are lessening slowly down the
Winging their way toward semedistant home.
A gray cloud rises upward like a dome,
And si a gulls hunt the sand with garrulous
dries,
And high above the wild and windy cape,
Scathed "by the lightning, bent by stormy
gales,
There stands the lciunautei an ancient tree ;
The clambering vines lis shattered fragments
drape,
And wave a welcome te the swelling sails
That win their way up Irem the dlsUtut sea.

Tlic Frencii Marriage Law
Some ten years ae Ml!e. d'lrucceurt,
one of the richest heiresses in France,
elepeil with M. Paul Musurus Key, the
son of the Turkish ambassador te Londen,
and was married te him by civil ceremony
in England, the young lady being at the
time just sixteen, while her bridegroom,
who is described as a fine looking and most
attractive gentleman, was just thirty. Be
fore the honeymoon was half concluded,
the bride's mother, armed with the terrors
of French law, had pounced upon the pair.
She took forcible possession of the peer
little wife of a fortnight, and bliut her up
in a convent. There the peer girl has re
mained ever since, all the efforts of her
husband te obtain eveu a sight of her hav
ing proved uuavailiug. A few days
age the French courts pronounced
the marriage null "and void en
account of the youth of Iho bride
and the lack of her mother's consent.
The leading of the peer child's letters at
the trial ( they were brought forward as
evidence that .she was net forced into the
marriage-, but entered into it with full con
sent and of her own frce will) created a
very lively impression, se filled were they
with naive expressions of love for and
confidence in her handsome wooer. New,
there was no reason en earth why Mile.
d'Imeceurt should net have been
suffered te become Madame Musurus Bey
in peace and iiuictness. The young
man occupied a high position in the diple
matte service of his native land. He is
net a Mussulman, but a member of the
Greek church, and in all respects he
is quite worthy, both personally and in
point of view of his social position, of be
coming the husband of Mile. d'Imeceurt.
Yet with net even a plea of a mesalliance
te back her opposition, the Countess
d'Imeceurt has succeeded in procuring the
annulment of her daughter's marriage with
the husband of her choice, and that in a
land where divorce is considered immoral.
A marriage has already been arrauged for
her with a French" duke, who is distant
connection of her own. It is rather un
favorable commentary en the system of
seclusion and espionage adopted with
high-born young French ladies, that the
chief accomplice in the elopement should
have been a Hungarian attendant, a gov
erness or confidential maid, in whom the
Countess d'Imeceurt reposed full confi
dence, and te whose caic she blindly-entrusted
her daughter.

Pest Bey Correspondence el the Cleveland
Leader.
This little station ou the Cleveland &
Marietta railroad, just three miles south
of Newcomerstown, is located ou the spot
where a bloody murder was committed
ever a century age, and, in fact, it de
rives its name from the occupation of the
murdered victim, he being a "pest boy"
or mail carrier. The circumstances of
this tragedy may be of seme interest from
the fact that the perpetrator of the crime
was the first and only man who ever paid
the death penalty within the limits of
Tuscarawas county.
William Cartwell, a young man about
eighteen years old, carried the United
States mail en horseback from Coshocton
te "West Chester, and traveled what is. new
known as the old Cadiz read On the 9th
lay of September, 1823, he was bhet by a
highwayman, wh j pillaged the mail bag
atid made his escape. A man named John John Jehn
eon, who was hunting in the vicinity,
heard the report of the rifle, and en re
pairing te the spot was horrified en dis
covering the lifeless remains of young
Cartwell lying by the read side. He raised
the alarm aud reused the whole neighbor
hood, which was seen laboring under the
most intense excitement. In their mad
frenzy the neighbors accused Jehnsen of
the crime, and he was arrested and con
fined iu the jail at New Philadelphia.
Jehnsen protested his iunocence, aud told
the shcrilf that, as soeu as he emerged
from the weed seen after hearing the
shot he caught a glimpse of the
murderer as he made his escape,
and he averred his ability te detect
him iu a crowd, be it ever ee large. Ac
cordingly the whole male population of
the county was requested te report at the
jail in New Philadelphia ou a certain day,
aud there be examined by Jehnsen, iu
order, if possible, te detect the guilty
paity. About thrce hundred responded
te the request ou the appointed day, and
by seme strange infatuation the guilty
man appeared among them, probably curi
ous te knew the result, little dreaming of
the danger. The men were arranged iu
two files, facing each ether, aud Jehnsen
passed between the ranks, carefully scru
tinizing every feature that met his gaze.
All at once he stepped suddenly and
seemed rooted te the spot. He fixed his
eyes en a man named Jehn Fuusten, and,
in thunder tones, yelled out, " That's the
man !" " Yeu are a liar," wasFunsten's
response, but all eyes were at once fixed
en him aud he seen showed unmistakable
cvidcuce of his guilt. He was tried ard
convicted, after which he mads a full con
fession, lie was sentenced te die and was
hanged en December CO, 1823, as the fol
lowing return of the sheriffs execution
shows :
1823, December 28, received this writ ;
and en the 30th day of December, A. D.
1825, between the hours of 12 o'clock,
neon, aud 2 o'clock p. m., I executed this
writ by hanging the within named Jehn
Funsten until he was dead. Ne fees
chargel. "Walter M. Blake,
Sheriff.
The execution was public, aud a crowd
of curious people, te the number of 5,000,
witnessed the hanging.
