Ant Antics.
Sir Jeliu Lubbeck "Consider Her Ways-'
ami Describes Interestingly Her
Keenness or Vision.
Sir Jehn Lubbeck recently read a paper,
"Observations en Ants," before the Lin
nsean Society of Londen. He said that In
one of his former papers he had given a
series of experiments made with light of
different colors in order, if possible, te
determine whether ants had the power of
distinguishing colors. Fer this purpose
he utilized the dread which ants, when in
their uebts, have of light. Net unnatur
ally, if a nest is uncovered they tuiuk-lhey
aw beiug attacked, and hasten te carry
their yeuDg away te a darker an-J, as they
suppose, a safer place. He satisfied
himself by hundreds of experiments
that if he exposed te light most of a nest,
but left any part of it covered ever, the
young would certainly be couveyed te the
dark portion. In this manner he ascer
tained that the different rays of the spec
trum acteu them in a different manner
from that in which they effect us, for in
stance, that ants arc specially sensitive te
the violet rays. But he was anxious te go
beyond this and te attempt te determine
hew far their limits of vision agicc with
ours. We all knew that if a ray of white
light is passed through a prism it is broken
up iute a beautiful band of colors the
spectrum. Te our eyes it is bounded by
red at the ene end and violet at the ether,
the edge being sharply marked at the red
end, but less abruptly at the violet. Hat
a ray of light contains, besides the rays
visible te our eyes, ethers which arc called,
though net with absolute correctness,
heat rays and chemical rays. These,
se far from being bounded by the
limits of our vision, extend far bo be bo
yeml it, the heat rays at the red, the
chemical rays at the violet end. He
wished, under these circumstances, te de
termine, if possible, whether the limits of
vision in the case of ants was the same as
with us. This iuteiestiug preblem he en
deavored te selve as fellows : If an ant's
nest be disturbed, the ants seen carry
their grubs aud chrysalides uudorgreund
aaiu te a place of safety. Sir Jehn avail
ing himself of this habit, placed some
ants with larva) and pup.-n between two
plates of glass about one-eighth of an
inch apart a distauce which leaves just
room enough for the ants te move about
freely. He found that if he covered ever
part of the glass with any opaiue sub
stance the young wero always carried te
the part thus darkauud. He thou tried
placing ever the nest different cel
ercd glasses aud found that if he
placed side by side a pale yellow glass and
one of deep violet the young were always
carried uudcr the former, showing that
though the light yellow was much mere
transparent te our eyes, it was, en the
contrary, much less se te the ants. Se far
he had geno iu experiments already re
corded. Hut he new wished, as already
mentioned, te go further and test the
effect upon them of tun ultra-violet rays,
which te us are invisible Fer this pur
pose, anions ether experiments, he used
sulphate of quinine, aud bcsulphidc of
carbon, both of which transmit all the
visible rays, and arc therefore perfectly
colorless and transparent te us, but which
completely step the ultra-violet rays.
Over a part of one of his nests he placed
Hat-sided bottles containing the above-mentioned
Hinds and ever another part a piece
of dark violet glass ; in every case the larva:
were carried uudcr the transparent liquids
aud net under the violet glass. Again, he
threw a spct rum into a similar nest aud
feundtliat if tlie ants had te cheese between
placing their young in the ultra-violet
rays or iu the red they preferred the latter.
He infeis, theiefere, that thcauts pcreehe
the ultra-violet rays, which te our eyes
are quite iuviniblc. New, as ever ray of
homogeneous liht which we can perceive
at all appcrs te us a distinct color, it seems
piobable that these ultra-violet rays must
make themselves appaicut te the
ants as a distinct and separated color
(of which we can form no idea) but
as unlike the rest as red is from
yellow or giccti from violet. The question
also arises whether while light te these
insects would differ from our white light
iu containing this additional color. At
any rate, as lew of the colors iu nature
are pure colors, but almost all arise from
the combination of rays of different wave
lengths, and as in such cases the visible
resultant would be composed net only
of the rays which we sec but of these aud
the ultra-violet it would appear that the
colors of objects and the general aspect
of nature must present te them a very
different appearance from what they de
te us. Similar experiments which Sir
Jehn, also made, with some of the
lower Crustacea point te the same
conclusions; but the account of
these experiments he reserved
te a future occasion. He then proceeded
te describe some experiments made en the
sense of direction possessed by ants ; but
it would net be easy te make these intelli
gible without figures. After detailing
some further experiments en the power of
recognizing friends, he gave some facts
which appear te show that auts by selec
tion of feed can produce cither a queen or
a weikcr at will from a given egg.
Lastly, he staled that he had still some
ants which he had begun te observe iu
1874, aud which are still living and in
perfect geed health ; they new, therefore,
must be mere than seven years old, being
by far the eldest insects en record.
