LANCASTER DAILY JNTELLIGENGER. THURSDAY, JULY 28 1881. I I :.- IV If. lAtu-asu'i irntelltaencev THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 28, 188L On Ike Farm. w.r. Teles ReneYatlng Old Orchard. of Maine, In Gcrmautewn Atlierten, rupu. I ence scraped and washed a dozen large Baldwin trees thirty years of ,'age. It was considerable work te de it, and yet I think it paid, for there was an evident increase ingrewth, healthiness and fruitfulness. When I was a hey, my father frequently used te set me te work in the spring, en a vciy wet or foggy day, scraping the trunks of old apple trees. It wasn't Very nice work for the eyes, and everybody that came along had te give an opinion as te the benefit or damage resulting frem'the operation, and as near as I can new re member, opinions wero.Jabeut equally di vided, lie this as it may, my own judg ment is that serious injury might result te a tree from a severe scraping at the wrong season of the year; but if performed in the warm months of spring, and a strong wash of soft soap or whale oil soap, or pet'ish water, applied then, the results would be highly beneficial. I de net knew that I have anything new or interesting te write out ; but for the benclit of your readers, allow me state what little experience I have had in the management of old orchards." One old orchard en my place has net been plowed te my huowlcdge for thirty five years, aud hew much longer I de net knew. It dbvers one and a-half acres of ground, and is se situated as te receive ever it a large portion of the wash from a read aud Irem the barnyard opposite Frem the latter source, however, the bene fit is derived principally in the spring of the year. But wherever the rising of the ground has prevented the wash from llow llew ing, frequent top-dressings have been ap plied, and thus the fertility of the laud aud the productiveness of the orchard kept up. Ne suckers have been allowed te grew up about the trunks of these trees, except when one is needed te preserve the line of descent ; and the trees have been pruned every two or three years, generally in the month of November of December. Anether old orchard, a little less in ex tent and closely adjoining, but en dryer land, has been treated the same in regard te pinning aud top-dressing, the only dif ference being that it has been plowed two or three times, planted te corn or potatoes each time, and resecded the following year with grain-crops. Te plow a piece of ground two or three times in thirty-five years is certainly net very often ; aud te keep the laud from running out it was top dressed occasionally, sometimes with barn yard manure and sometimes with a com post made of muck, manure, ashes and lime. It was with this compost that the laud was top-dressed some seven or eight years age, aud if I remember rightly it followed one of similar character made only three years bcferc, bnt which had proved very unsatisfacteiy. This ene also was disap pointing in its results; se much se, that I determined te plow the ground, and did se parly in tha fall of 1S77, sewiug te winter wheat, after dressing the land with a com post of nearly similar make, and about 800 pounds of ground bone added. The crop of wheat in 1S7S was rather light en ac count of a short, pinching drought, just as it was hcadiuji aud lilliusr. Ne crrasssccd was sewn, but the clever and ether grasses came in se strongly and grew se rapidly after the wheat was removed, that in the fall everybody thought the land had been seeded. The land was plowed again, aud there was mere grass te turn under than at the first plowing, when the laud seemed actually hide-bound. In the spring or 1870, I spread ever the ground and thoroughly worked in a heavy coat el well retted herse and hog manure, aud sewed te spring wheat. It was sewed as late as ll.e 14th of June, aud yet was se stout Jaud ledged se badly, with quite a drought following, that a large part of the young grasses were killed out. In the spring of 1S80, I sewed en a little mere grass seed, and the hay crop that year was a geed one ; and thisycar(18Sl)wc cut two tens te the acre, where a few years age less than half that amount was cut, aud that of a inferior quality. The old apple trees in this orchard were pruned in the fall in December, I think all the dead limbs aud the majority of the suckers be ing removed. They were principally grafted fruit Baldwins and Uussets there being a few old natives left, and the apples en all these trees have been fairer aud twice the size for two years from what they were formerly. Seme of the trees were se heavily leaded that many of the limbs broke down. I knew of one man nearby here who ren ovated several old trees by digging circu lar trenches aU about them as far as the limbs extcuded, aud then partly filling, them with manure and replacing the earth, lie also mulched them heavily. The re sult was that the trees bore enormous crops and the fruit was twice, and in some cases, three times its former size. Some of his trees broke down under the extra straiu put upon them. I have no doubt that frequent aud moderate applications of mauure te old orchards is a geed thing; but I am net in favor of heavy or excess ive manuring, as it tends te stimulate the trce tee much, aud a reaction is sure te fellow, if they de uet immediately break down. Brandy as a Medicine. The following article was voluntarily sent te Mr. II. E. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was uever intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of great potency in the cure of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice of invalids espe cially these afllictcd with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a Spceilic remedy, which 13 nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with tecble appetite and mere or less ueeniiy, win nnu tins simpie medicine, when nscd properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their Ills aud aches. Be it, however strictly understood that we prescribe anil use but one article, and that is KEIGAKT'S OLD BBANDY, Sold by our enterprising young irlcnd, II K SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as far as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preierence ever all et.icr Brandies no matt er with hew many Jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or ascs. In proof or the curative powers ei Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon num bers et witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working farmer had been atllicted with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ier a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had sour eructation con. stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new, S reached at times, and in ids discourses often cciaiincd earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with astonishment, but after hearing el its wonderful etlccts in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound nian.with a stomach capable or digesting any tiling which hejcliose te eat. He still keeps it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since lie has this medi cine he lias been or very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor.
