forming them that they were in Philadel
phia hunting work, and if they did net
succeed in getting any before Saturday
would return home. Frisby aud Newcomer
left them upeu their arrival in the city,
aud have net been seen since.
This morning a heieran away, aud had
it net been for the timely assistance of Mr.
William Blackson, sr., it would have re
sulted with serious ceusequcuccs. The
horse becoming scared at a passing euginp,
started oil' and ran directly for the pat-sing
train. The lady and gentleman, who wcie
iu the carriage, sccing their danger, sprang
out, and in the very nick of time the horse
was saved by Mr. Blackson grabbing the
bridle and bringing him te a step. With
the exception of a bad scare nothing
serious was the result.
An exciting as well as disgraceful scene
was witnessed en Lancaster avenue yes
terday afternoon. A number of women
were lighting, and when the men attempt
ed te stej) it, the women turned, and in a
body lushed upon them, and they net
liking te stsike a woman were forced te
run. Thcse disgraceful affairs are of daily
occurrence, and the peaceful inhabitants
aieund there arc forced te witness them,
and if they interfere then they arc abused
and .sometimes beaten. Several arrests
and complaints have been made, and
among these arrested are two women who
aie generally the cause of all disturbances.
A Series et llebberies.
On Tuesday night an attempt te rob the
house of David Fisher, iu Kitchcntewu,
was made. The robbers climbed a grape
arbor, and raising a window effected an en
trance. The inmates of the house dis
tinctly heard them, but were tee badly
frightened te give an alarm. One of the
neighbors iu passing noticed the open win
dow and the tern arbor, and thinking all
was net right, knocked at the front deer,
which se scared the robbers that they
dropped the booty they had secured and
lied, making their escape by a back deer.
On the same night the house of Win.
Yeung was also broken into, but before
anything of value could be secured they
were scared off.
Anether but much bolder lebbery was
committed last, night at the residence of
Mr. Gee. Ilaldeinau en Chestnut street.
A ladder had been placed against the side
of the house which reached the second
story window. The robbers entered a room
and after it was thoroughly ransacked,
they descended te the dining room. Heie
they relieved the sideboard of all its valu
able silver-plated ware. They next went,
te the kitchen, but as nothing of value
could be found there they took their de
parture. In the morning one of the serv
ants found the gas iu the dining i6em
lighted but net uutil the ladder was dis
covered was there an alarm raised. The
family descended aud feuud things iu a
disordered condition. Ne steps have as
yet been taken te Hud the robbers.
It appears that the rebcrrics that have
been committed lately, are dene by a reg
ularly organized gang, and they work in
separate crowds of three. The robberies
en Tuesday night were done at nearly the
samp lime, about 1:30 a. m., showing that
it is cither an organized crowd or else there
are mere than one separate crowds. Last
night one of our watchmen noticed
a crowd of men, six iu number, standing
at Mczicr's drugstore. He watched them
for seme time, and when they walked
across Second street, he followed. At
the Vigilaut heuse they separated,
three going up Walnut, street, no doubt
the ones which robbed Haldcman's, and
the ether three coming back aud going
down Wilsen's alley. The watchman fol
lowed them as far as ltedsccker's livery
stable when they disappeared. Our po
lice force is net large enough for a town
the size of Columbia, and if council docs
net take the matter in hand at ence their
mistake cannot be rectified. People en
the route that Henry Redcnhauscr watches
feel safe, as he is always en hand when
wanted. Le t council put a man like Mr.
It. en each square at night and thcse rob
beries will net then be committed.

THUBSDAY EVENING, JULY 38, 1881.
IMPROVING.
A GOOD NIGHT'S REST.
THIS CONDITION OF THK PRES1DEN T.
An Encouraging Repert.
Executive Mansion, Washington, D.
C, July 28, 7 a. m. Dr. Blias says the
president passed an excellent night, better
than any since he was wounded. lie slept
soundly most of the night, and aweke this
morning looking bright and feeling hun
gry. Thore has been a satisfactory dis
charge of pus during the night. His tem
perature this morning is apparently about
normal.
The Official Repert.
Executive Mansion, "Washington,
July 28. 8 A. m. The president rested
well during the night, and no rigor or fob
rile disturbance has occurred since the
bulletin of yesterday evening. This morn
ing the improvement of his general con
dition is distinctly perceptible. He ap
pears refreshed by the night's rest, and
expresses himself cheerfully as te his con
dition. Pulse, 02 ; temperature 93-4 ; res
piration, 18.

What Rockwell Says.
executive mansion, July xe, ll a. in.
Cel. Rockwell says the president is de
cidedly better this morning than he has
been at any time since he was wounded ;
that at the morning dressing there was a
free aud healthy discharge of pus from
the wound, and that that portion of- the
wound above the incision was observed te
have commenced healing.
The Carpet Blase Ge.
The surgeons, after a consultation en
the subject this morning ceneluded that
the removal of tbe heavy carpet which
new covers the iloer of the president's
chamber would be beneficial ; aud, con
sidering the brightness of the morning,
with a perfectly fresh and dry atmosphere,
together with the favorable condition
of the patient, it was decided te make
the change at once. The surgeons main
tain that the carpet absorbs the impurities
of the atmosphere which invariably exist
te a mere or less extent in the sick cham
ber and that it is a receptacle for the se
cretion of dust etc. The president's bed was
caic fully removed from his own room te a
room immediately across the hall where
he is new resting quietly. After the car
pet of the sick chamber is taken up the
floors will be carefully dusted and
a fire kindled in the grate for
the purpose of securing a thorough
vontilatieu. The president will net
be taken back te bis chamber fur
several hours. Fer the purpose of obviat ebviat
ting the sounds of footsteps upeu the
fleer strips of carpet will be placed in the
most frequented parts of the room.
It is considered that this arrangement;
will render the chamber much mero re
freshing te the patient, and that it will
henceforth be decidedly mere comfortable.
Had it been practicable the surgeons say
they would have ordered the change madu
before.
A Uoed Repert.
The attending surgeons say that the
president has net looked se well since he
was wounded as he docs this morning, and
that he is delighted with thochange which
is being made in his room and feels greatly
refreshed.
Midday Official Bulletin.
Executive Mansion, 12:30 p.'m. The
president bere the dressing of his wounds
this morning with less fatigue than hith
erto. It appears well and is discharging
sufficiently. Shortly aftdrwards his bed
was rolled into an adjoining room while
that occupied till new is being thoroughly
cleansed and put iu order. Pulse !)4, tem
perature OS, respiration 18.

THE MEXICAN DEBT.
Officious Intermeddling Repudiated.
Chicago, July 28. A special te the
Times from the City of Mexico says :
"The government has information that
unauthorized parties in the United States
and England are endeavoring te form a
syndicate te readjust the national debt
held in England. The scheme is a pri
vate speculation and is repudiated by
the president and secretary of the treas
ury. Nobody has been authorized te make
any arrangements. The question will be
considered by the government at an early
date through official delegates, when satis
factory arangements will be made."
THE RAILROAD PRESIDENTS.
Discussing Terrapin and I'emery Sec.
Philadelphia, July 28. Owing te the
fact that President Roberts of the Penn
Bylvauiajrailread had been invited by Mr.
W. H. Vanderbiit te dine with him at the
Union League, a rumor gained currency
te the effect that a conference was te be
held looking toward a settlement of the
dispute ever the trunk line passenger and
freight rates. It is new stated upon geed
authority that there is no troth in this
rumor, and that the meeting is entirely of
a social charrcter.
