Ceuccrnlug tlie On Saturday Dr. Ilawkes, who is pre paring James awl Harvey (J.uiichl for col lege, aiul Dr. ttoynteu. of Cle velauil, were ili.scnsbing the president's condition, when reference was made te the fact that, out side of the Fcauty bulletins issued by tlie physicians, the public knew nothing nor had any means et knowing. " Yeu see tiie patient every day, doctor ; tell me hew he appears te you ."' said a Prest correspond ent. " What you say eoucerning the scanty means of obtaining ncw& is cor rect," said the physiciau, " awl many er roneous reports have gene forth concern ing the piesidetit's condition. He is very much weaker a much sicker nun than the pttblie lns any idea of. lleperts have gene forth about the president greeting his friends with a hearty grasp of the hand aud speaking in a natural toue of voice. It is net true, aud it is calculated te deceive the public. Yeu take held of General (.huiield's hand and lie manages te press yours, and Unit's all." " Dees he raise his head at all V" " Net a bit. He lies prone en his back and it is all he can de te turn his head from side te side. His voice is low and feeble. "When I went iute the room 1 took his hand and he squeezed it gently and said : ' JSoynteu, I am glad you are here yet. What de you think of my chances te-day, Uoynten 1" " 'Oh ! I think you arc getting along very nicely indeed, Mr. I'lesident. Everything seems favorable for your re covery.' " 1 will recover, Uoynten, but I have had a terrible struggle with prostration for several days.' " ' JJut you seem te have cemmeied '.'' "'De you think sol" aud then gl.iue ing up at the clock, whose hands pointed te 9, he s-iid, feebly : ' 'Iu fifteen uiiiiuicK ii. will bj a week ; a long- week. Uoynten.' " His eyes closed ler a lew moments, anil then he .aid : ' Uoynten, Iiave you any idea where the ball is '." " I told him I thought it was ledged iu the anterior wall of the abdomen aud he said.hc thought se, tee, and added : ' It waslueky that it stiuck the ribs. If the wound can be kept open I will get v.ell, but they must keep it open.' 1 saw he was talking loe much 'and rose te go. He held my hand and said : 'De net leave me.' I told him I would ubl if he did net talk any mere, and he piemiscd net te." ' Docter, what meansarclhey taking te keep the wound open'."' " Nothing at present. It is discharging itselfnew." Finding Colonel IJeekwell at leisure a few moments, the reporter asked him hew the president passed the day, and he said : '"As well as could bn expected." He then detailed tlie following couveistitieu with the patient : Tlie picr.idcnt " It-jckwctl, is it true t bat- the Catholic churches had special mass for me last Sunday '."' "Yes, sir." " Was it erdeicil ei spontaneous V" " Deth, bir. :u; I understand it." The president was quieter for a moment, as though thinking of something pleasant, and said : "I must take some notice of that when I get well." Oiice he asked, " Dees litis man who shot me show any signs of contrition or sei row?" " 1 fear from all I hear he does net, sir. I think be only regrets his attempt en your lifts was net nunc successful, sir.' "(an it be ?" murmured the piesident, as though reluctant le believe it. This afternoon the president asked Colonel Rockwell what the feeling seemed te be among the people at large. "Frem what I sea in the papers and innumerable lelteis and telegrams 1 10 eeive," said the colonel, " I think the unanimous sentiment is with you le the greatest extent. They weie stunned by the blew, and their alleelieus are with you te a man. I think the hcait of the Aineti cin people was never wrung se belbie." "It is a sad heart," said the president, "but undaunted." A few moments later his eyes twinkled with humor aud the president asked, " Will the heart of the Amc.icau people give me a glass of water." TIIK 1'OSITION OF TIIK KUM.I'L'. Nullilug but Theories as te Its Wltrrtiabeuti Wlieru It Jlay He. Surgeon CJeneral Wa'cs of the navy, who fitst indicated the eetusu Ouiteau's bullet had taken, said that it was by no means certain that the ball is new ledged near the liver, or lias even touched it at any time. ''Alter the president was shot," said Dr. Wales, "I inserted the end of iny little linger at (he mouth of the wound, and found that the ball had passed be tween the tenth and eleventh ribs, injuring both of them slightly. My experiment proved simply that the ball had passed into the body and was ledged somewhere, wc believed, in the liver, judging from the dhcclien of the wound and from the p,t ticnt's symptoms. Hut the s-tme symptens have, w itliiii my own experience, attended gunshot wennils when the ball was net within reach of the liver. One of Admiral Fanagut's men was shot in the back thice and ouehalf inches away from the spine, about where ('uiteau's bullet entered. The nerves aud muscles of the spine de net sprciul as far outward and escaped injury in both cases. The physicians iu charge detcrm'ned that the bullet had entered the seaman's body and settled semewhciC in the abdomen. Tlte symptoms favored this diagnosis. The wound showed a tendency te heal, suppuration continued, aud en the tenth day this is the seventh day of the presi dent's wounds I inserted a delicate rub ber ptobe that I sometimes use. It is small and pliable and cosily fellows the ceiu.su of the wound. Te my surprise the probe, which went in readily te its full length, stepped below the right nipple. I diew it out again, made an incision below the nipple, and started the prebe forward again. In two inches mero it reached the bullet or fragment of a shell as it really was, and iu a few minutes I had it out. Here it Is." Dr. "Wales took from a cabinet a jagged picce of iron weighing two ounces. " Yeu would scarcely believe' that anyene could live with it iu his hotly." added the surgeon. "De you think then, doctor, that there J is imminent danger from the shade el un certainty that exists as te the exact posi tion of the bullet iu the president's body?" "There is danger as long as irritation centiuttcs, because it is impossible te say what turn that irritation may take. Tlie case is progressing fairly, I admit, but a geed surgeon, like a geed pilot, is mil satisfied te have his ship meiely iu deep waters for the moment. Iccssaut sound ing mubt be made." The surgceu says there is danger from this aud danger from that. Wounds like this one de net always preve fatal within an hour or within a -week, but the records of physiciaus show that very few having tliem ever recover. "What arc the greatest dangers at present?" "Peritonitis and py:emia or blood bleed poisoning. The Iatter may develop at any hour within two weeks of the date of the injuries. The former exists new, but I hope only in a local form. General Gar field's pulse new ranges from 98 te 10S. It should be about (id. His temperature is 100 aud sometimes mere. I have known peritonitis te develop under a tempcrature of 101.5 and cud fatally. The respiration continues at 2-i when it should be about 16. The accelerated pulse is due te the ex ex eitement and intlammatien of the wounds. Meiphia at night always reduces it. As for pyiumia, that is much te be dreaded. Duriug the war a seaman was struck with a fragment of a shell, which splintered his arm, besides fracturing two ribs and severing an artery. The arm I amputated at the shoulder. The patient was a gigantic Scotchman of splendid physique, aud a few days after the operation he was en his feet again. About the tenth day this bleed poiseniug set in, and iu twenty-four hours he was dead. Te cll you all the uncertainties and dangers of President Gariicld's situation would require a lecture of thiee hours, which would leave you, after all, a little in the dark. The Prcs.t has, I believe, given no credence le the reported disagreements between the at tending physicians. It was very sensible net te, aud although I am net new one of them, I will say te you that the physicians iu this case never disagreed ; they merely could net explain themselves te the public," " Would the formation of an abcess be very serious, doctor?" " Nobby any means. That would indi cate the locality of the ball and it might be cut out. New, as I have said, there is nothing but theories as te its wheieabeuls and it could be reached either by an ab cess or its prcseuce indicated by an acute tenderness or heat at any point en the body. An incision might be made. The ball might have followed the ribs en iu the inside, escaping all the vital organs. Dur ing the war a bullet that entered a man s back was cut from the iieshy part of his leg several days alter. There is cause for alarm wherever there is doubt. A suddcu change may come, but I hope that it may net. Phybieiaus only grapple with facts aud the record of such cases as this is a dubious one. When this man Guiteau is brought into court," ceucluded the sur geon general, " he will be tried as ethor criminals ate who have attempted te com mit murder, aud ids sentence will he no heavier iu the case of the president of the United States than if he had tired at you or inc. It is of no weight that the people would like te sce his neck strelchcd fiem Dan te Hershecba. In the same way Pres ident Garlield new takes the same chances fur life that another man would. The physicians' rule is the same for the presi dent or the vagabond shot in the street, aud Ccn. Gariicld's case is only one in a record of several thousand." TIIK I'ltK-SlDKNl'S WOU.Nl. Net Likely tlie Hall Touched tlie Liver. The doctors in charge of the case arc leth te give up the opinion that the bul let has gene into or at least leached the liver, but among the profession outside the opinion is spreading that the liver has net been alleeted te any extent worth speaking of, and among non-professional people who are, however, thoieughly ceu- Acrsaut wiiu ine treatment el gun-1 shot wounds Ireni service in the late war, the liver-laceration thceiy has long since been abandoned. Said one of the most respected eiti.ens : " I at first thought that the liver had been injured because the physicians in charge said se, but 1 de net think se new, because every symptom is entirely consistent with the fact that the ball was delteeted by contact with the rili ami simply made a severe llesh wound resting in the ti-sues about that part of the body. Of cmir:-e the jaundice canto from the liver, but a man of such active habits as General Gai field when put en a bed aud kept there for a week is apt te have a torpid liver. A carbuncle ever the liver might turn the patient yellow from jaundice, and yet in such eases the liver would net be aueelcd. Anetber Opinion. "My opiuieii," said Cel. O. P. Uurn side, "is that tlie bali has net euteicd the abdominal cavity at all but is instead ledged semcwhciu in the wall of the body at that point. There are none of the indi cations of the internal hemorrhage which would have been present had the ball passed iute tiie interior. Had the ball gene iuside the body there would have been a Hew of bleed there which would have brought en peritonitis beyond a doubt, and death would have been a mat ter of a very short time. I h.ive seen se much of the lesults which may Hew fiem the least interruption iu the course of :' Hying buttlet, that I would net feel at all Miipiiscd te hear thai the bullet was far from the point of entiy, that there was i but ;i ilcslt wound ailer all. when, en Wednesday morning, 1 lead in the papciu that the president was still alive, I made up my mind "that he did net have any bteak iute the lower cavity of the body and I feel mere can vine ed of this every day. I Ibid that almost everybody I meet is working round te the same view of the oase." Dr. James !t. Weed's Opinion. Piofesser James It. Weed said tiiat l.c did net think any one knew the exact course taken by the bullet which wounded the president. The ball entered the tight side and may have ledged at a considerable distance away from the point where it cn teicd. The least icsistance by a bone or a muscle would dellect it, and it may new be among the tissues en the left side of the body. At the patt of the body where the bullet entered tlie muscles are very thick, aud may have turned the ball either down dewn waul or towards the ether side of the body. Dr. Weed did net think that the liver had been penetrated unless, perhaps, at the lower part, where the organ u very thin. The slight. jaundice that had been noticed was net positive evidence that the liver had 1 . . -,- 14 i, 1 1 uccii iiijureu, ler jauuuice ircquuuuy 101- lows gunshot wounds. A HamkuiTcd llaudit. Some enthusiastic missionaries were found who believed the papers might be genuine, but an investigation seen proved, beyond a doubt, the utter worthlessness of the thing in all that it preteuded te be. This, in its way, was a geed story ; but a better ene comes new from the small Samaritan town of Stablus, in which live Samaritans that claim direct descent from the ancient people. They possess a manu script which they say iu elder than Paul or Jehn the Uaptist, elder than Jewish Kings or Egyptian Phareahs ; elder, in fact, than Herodotus, Hemer, or ethers who wiote iu the buuiise of human litcnttuic. It was a Uiblc, the Uible of Moses, and the Uihle of Aaren, the first high piiest of the Israelites, written, moreover, by a grand son of that very Aaren ! " I, Pinchas, seu of the high priest Elcaxcr, seu of the high priest Aaren, have written this holy book" says a note at the cud of the aueicnt volume. Fer long years these Samaritans have watched anil protected from harm this Uiblc of their.", but why he hear of it new as news and why it should, presum ably, have been unknown iu Eutepe be fore, there aie no explanations. Uut hear of it we de iu a foreign newspaper, also that money in large sums has been eltercd ler it m vain, awl that at last, after urgent aud lepeated requests, an American missionary lias obtained the present high-priest's consent te a photo graphic reproduction of a portion of it. Here, indeed, is a Uiblc which the Lenex library complete as its collection of Uibles u.i'ieublcdly is possesses net and knows net of. It was a small Uiblc Aaren'K grandson had le read, but there was in it the story of oicatieu, and Cel. lngorsell would be glad te knew for a cer tainty hew that was told teme thiity-tive centuries age. Theio aie also the Ten Commandments, and the story of Old Neah and his ark. What would the colonel net give for all this, written iu the exact words of Moses, aud iu the hand hand writingef Anion's gnuuhen into the bar gain ! tm m Eminent 1'liynlclaus are pi eeeflhing that tried and true leniedy Kidney-Weil ler Hid worst cuscj of lulieits ucss and constipation, as well as for kidnej kidnej (eiiiplainl.s.
