LANCASTER DAILI INTELLI6ENGER, THURSDAY, JULY 7, 1881. Hancagtet Intelligencer. THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 7, 1S81. THE FARM. 8EASONAULE HINTS FOR IT. Advlc from the Grmantewn Telejrraph. Creps in England again premise an in different yield. The drought up te the early part of June, and cold easterly winds, seriously affected the cereal crops. The comparative peer harvest of last year, added te the depressing effects of the present prospect, has caused many farms te be vacated by tenants, about seventy per cent of whom, it is estimated, are in arrears for rent. The indications are that grain of all kinds will command advanced prices in England, and an increased quan tity will be required from the surplus of this country, which we can readily spare. In certain California peach-drying cs- talmsuments, tue weric 01 peeung me peaches has been much simplified by the following precess: A crate filled with fruit is dropped into a vat containing het lye, and there shaken. It is then re moved te a tank of pure cold water and the lve is washed away. The skins of the fruit by this process become se separated from the pulp that they arc drawn off with one motion of the hand. This saves much time, labor and expense. The new process causes the fruit te dry mere read ily, and a very slight less in weight re sults. When eauteleupes become the siz c of a fist place under each oue a piece of slate, te be obtained were a building is blated, or at the yard of the slater, or a piece of shingle will answer. This keeps the melon from contact with the ground and will prevent the ground from extracting the flavor from any portion of it, as is gener ally the case with watermelons and cante cante leupcs which we buy in the markets, as we all knew. Fer private domestic use, the little trouble which this protection gives is repaid a hundred fold in the excellence of the flavor of the fruit, and we think causes them te mature ear lier. Our gardens generally de net contain as geed a variety of herbs as they should, for even the use of the family. This would seem strange when they arc se convenient for the culinary department, and are se easily raided from the slip, but it must be from this year's growth. It is net tee late yet if attended te without delay. Te propagate in this way most of the herbs or seeds may be sewn with geed lcsultt-'. Formerly all the old, well established gar dens of farmers, contained a full supply of all the various kinds, which were carefully dried in the shade, by which they retained their entire virtue until the next crop was ready for nse. Pruning Hedges. Evcrgrccus as a rule are very sensitive te cold, cutting winds. Even the hard ened leaves that have been exposed te all the vicissitudes of the weather often get in jured by wintry winds ; and this is mere likely te be the case with these which are tender, as these inside, suddenly exposed te the weather by cutting away the out side, must be. Ne geed hedgist cuts away evergreens till the winter is evcr.and all danger of cold winds is gene. This disposes of dedgc pruning se far a evei greeits are concerned, but in the case of deciduous hedges, which need a renovating pruning, it is net only allowable but bound practice. In this vicinity we have many of these deciduous things used as ornamental hedges. We have beech, thorn, Osage orange, honey locust, pyrus japonica and some ether things of this character. Sometimes they are neglected, as our friend's evergreen hedge appears te be, and te lcnovate them they arc often cut near the ground se as te induce them te threw out a large let of new Mreuts, which the next year can be trimmed into shape. This sort of trim raing can be done at this season, and it is the only kind el hedge pruning that is at all seasonable. Hereabouts we leave the first evergreen pruning, hedges or ether wise, till mid Apiil, and the second as late as tiie beginning of November. Cheap Manure. Geamantewn Telegraph. When one gees te buy a farm his first concern is about cheap laud. Next he con siders hew he cau get cheap labor, and with these he is generally satisfied. Indeed, with many the price peracie is the main consideration. If a hundred and fifty dol lars, say, be the ruling price per acre, and he can buy for a hundred, it is a chance if the bargain is net at once made. It is nut often that cheap maiiuic is thought of, and yet we think it is of as much importance as all ethers. We have iudeed heard it put it as a truism by farmers about Philadelphia and put. in a way as if assured of no contradiction that no man could afford te pay mere than $130 per acre aud thrive. It is looked en as wholly a matter of the price of land ; but there cau be no doubt that one can better afford te pay $300 where manure is abundant and cheap, than $150 where it is net te be had at auy price. There are men about all large cities who either farm or garden laud worth several thousands of dollars an acre. They de net perhaps buy land at this figure and farm it ; but their rent aud perhaps taxes would represent the interest of this great sum. It is often said it is because they are near te market. They grew heavy ar ticles that arc costly te transport long distance-;, and the saving is here. There is some force in this; but little in compar ison with the facility they enjoy in cheap manure. The ceuutry fanner has no idea of the richness of their lauds, and by which they cau take offthree or four cieps of different articles a year. We knew many a country farmer who congratulates himself whenever there is a prospect of any thing occurring near him that may increase the value of his laud. This is all very well in its way. Yet we think many miss ic by allowing calcula tions of such increase te enter into their heads te tee great an extent. It keeps them from making improvements which might bear heavier crops, and which would bring in money mere quickly and abund antly than auy future increase in laud. It tends te rcduce agriculture te a real-estate speculation, rather than te continue it as one great business of life. It would as a general thing be of far mere profit for some business that tended te give the neighbor a chance at cheap manure te start near him than the most fashionable " country-scat " would be. Farmers are indeed often tempted te put the spare money into enterprises of mere show, en the plea of " improving " property, when they would hesitate about doing anything for industrial enterprises which might help the crops rather than the land. Thesj things seem se clear when pointed out as te make it appear hardly worth re ferring te; but we kiieiv t.ie, many who liave failed just here, many who have looked only te the price el' land or the price or land and labor, aud who have toiled en for years because there was no way te keep up the fertility or the land without great expense, that we are sure the remarks we have made will be gener ally useful. i The Londen Lancet.
