.Mass inn r mi American Surveying Parly
The following telegram appeared in the
New Yeik Sit) of yesterday :
"Snta Ki:, .Inly ". News from El
Pase says that a party of Americans, trav
eling in their own conveyances from Pase
Del Neile te Chihuahua, came suddenly
at the Sand Hills, about forty miles south
of Kl Pase, upon thirteen dead bodies, all
Americans, and a poriieii of the surveying
party of the Mexican Central railway. The
surveying party originally numbered thir
ty, and was under command of Lee.it ing
Engineer C. C. I'pham. The diseevcrei.s
immediately returned te Kl Pase, from
which place yesterday a detachment of
troops was sent out te ascei tain particulars.
!t is suppe-ed that the massacre was com
mitted bv the remnant, of Victorie's band
of Apaches, under Nam. Vicloiie's war
chief. Nam anil about thirty renegade
Apaches, the last of the once large and
powerful tribe, have been hiding and com
init tiiiij depredations in and about the
Sierra Candeleria for months, and although
constantly pursued by Mexican troops.
have se far net beer, punished or caught. "
The above i.-. supplemented te-day by a
.statement, in the morning papers that a re
port has also reached Les Cruees of the
niass:;cre of the whole Mexican Central
railway :uirveyiiig parly by Indians, in
Old Mexico. A company of cavalry have
been sent from Chihuahua fi investigate
the report.
Mr. .lames E. Cunuingh.isn, a son ei'tiie
Lite Themas Cunningham, and a cousin of
-Mrs..l. M. .Johnsten, of this city, was a
member of the surveying party whesi;
tragic fate is reported in the above dis
patches, and his visit, ie Lancaster two or
three weeks age may be recalled by the-e
who read the brief personal note of his
presence hese published in the local
papers. Te Mr. Ciinuin ;'u:itn's friends
liere and heieabtiuls the news of the mas
nacre comes therefore with especial terror
that is only lessened by the hope am! be
lief that Mr. Cunninghi.iii had net. yet
hail time te rejoin his companions of
tiic surveying piriy. Mr. Cunningh mi's
s-tay here was very brief, but. his
urpese en leaving was te spend a
hhert time at. Harrisburg, C)iic;i;e and
ether peinis en his return. Hew long his
visit wascxteiiiied can only be cen.jectuicd,
as his friends here have had no cemmuui
catien with him since his departure About
a year age Mr. Cunningham made a very
narrow escape from a similar fate, having
been one of a party who were ambushed
by Indians in Colerado, and of whom sev
eral were killed.
One dispatch giving an account of the.
massacre says th" surveying party was
under command of Engineers Meacham
and M. . I. Cunningham. Whilst the sim
ilarity el the .surname might alferd addi
tienal apprehcnsien.it is remembered with
a gleam of hope that J. E. aie the initials
of the gentleman whose fate is at present
a matter of such mournful uncertainty.

Latest Bulletins from the Sick Chamber.
Te day's Early Callers.
Executive Mansion, 9:30 a. m. The
president's symptoms are probably less
dangerous te-day than at any previous
time since the sheeting. The first callers
this morning were Postmaster Gen. James
and 2d Assistant Postmaster Gen. Elmer.
They both left with bright faces, and Dr.
Bliss, who is new looking ever the morn
ing's mails, appears te be well satisfied
with the course matters are taking,

Executive Mansion, July 7. 10:15 a.
m. Attorney General MacVcagh says the

The Doctors' Latest Hulletiu.
Executive Mansion, Washinoten,
July 7, 1 v. m (Official). The condition
of the president continues quite as favor
able as this morning : Pulse 100; temper
ature 100.8 ; respiration 23. Unless some
unfavorable change should occur, no
further bulletin will be issued until 8:30.
(Signed) D. W. Buss,
J. K. Barnes,
J. J. Woodward,
Rebert Reyuurn.
A (ioed Appetite.
Executive Mansion, July 7 2:30 i m.
The condition of the president has re
mained substantially unchanged since the
date of the last official bulletin. The
slight increase in pulse and temperature
since morning is said by the at
tending physicians te be only the
natural fluctuation of the fever
from morning until neon. The president
has eaten chicken broth te-day, and ex
pressed a strong desire about neon for
toast and oatmeal with milk. The latter
was given te him as probably the least
objectionable kind of the solid feed which
he seemed te crave.
Mem Than an Even Chance.
Ill conversation this afternoon with Dr.
Boynton, the president's family physi
cian, Dr. Bliss expressed the opin
ion that the president's chance of
recovery was new considered mere
than even. Tlie danger of peritonitis,
he said, was rapidly passing away, anil, al
though it might still occur, its occurrence
had become improbable.
TUe Present t'eril.
The only accidents new te be apprehended'
Dr. Bliss said, and the only ones likely te
terminate fatally, were secondary hemor
rhage and jiytemia, or bleed poison
ing. Secondary hemorrhage might
occur at any time up te 'the
seventh day, but en account of
the course which the ball took, and the
place where it is supposed te lie, the dan
ger of secondary hemorrhage was net, in
Dr. j Bliss's opinion, a serious one. Pye
mia, or bleed poisoning, was the ac
cident most te be feared, and of thatthcie
was net yet, he said, the slightest indica
tion. An abscess also might form at any
point along the course of the ball or at the
exticmity of the wound, but with this he
said they could deal successfully.
gj.The President an Admirable Patient.
Dr. Bliss expressed great reliance upon
the president's vigorous constitution,
strong vitality and calm courage. He was,
the doctor said, the very best patient he
had seen in the com se of bis surgical prac
tice Secretary lllaliic's Continued Assurance.
Washinoten, July 7. The following
dispatch was sent te-day by Secretary
Blaine te Minister White at Berlin :
" The president has been steadily im

this government for his sympathy."
He also scut the following te Minister
Noyes at Paris : " Tlie president continues

Londen, July 7. A sjiccial dispatch
from New Yerk says : "Mr. Gladstone is
criticized for suggesting in the Heuse of
Commens that the sheeting of President
Garfield was the result of a political con
spiracy." Mr. Gladstone made no such
suggestion publicly nor, se far as known
here, privately. What he did say in the
Heuse of Commens en Monday in re
sponse te Sir Stafferd Northceto's inquiry
whether the government could communi
cate anything touching the terrible and
atrocious crime was simply that he could
net be surprised that a question should be
asked in regard te the outrage, the charac
ter of which was such as te attract the at
tention of the whole civilized world, and
which se greatly afl'ects the feelings and
welfare of a nation, net only friendly te
England, but growing mere friendly
