LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, TUESDAY, JULY 5, 1881. Hancaster intelligencer. TUESDAY EVENING, JULY 5, 1881. THE OLD FARMER ON THE COMET. Fer the IiSTELLieENCEn. This comet, old wife, that's been travelln' se last, Through the sky with a .speed that surely can't last, Is a wonderful wonder te the 'stronemers all And we'll wonder, tee. should the tarnal thing lull. It Is scoetln' 'long backward, sethestar-gazere say, Like a crab travels 'bout, with ijs tall the wrong way; But the back-hlldln' crab has little speed In It, While this comet a thousand miles gees in a minute ; And at that rate el gein it will git pretty seen. Te the end of its string, if It misses the moon, Hut the papers don't state that the moon's in its read. And the papers all talk just as if they all knewed ; Se of course the moon's safe, though 1 think it leeks pule, E ut perhaps it's afecred of that extra, long tail ; Fer ir that tail should once switch at askecter or il y. It would make a disturbance up there in the sky. And 11 all of that tail, as It's p'intin', should inn. As they think that it will, light square In the sun, There'll be -cerchin' and fryin" and llzzln' I knew. That tin; tail that's been bin lit te forget will be blew ; And the sparks 'ill comedown In a new kind of hail. And one gi ecu umbrella will hardly avail Topietcctii, 1 fear, while the shower will last. Fer when hail comes f-e far it will always comes fast. And tin- big chunks el lire that git Ioem; in the battle Wlii-ii they're coming down they will come Willi a rattle. And if airy stray one uiinscs hittin' the ocean. It will stir up the Miiner, I've a pretty big notion, TilMln-y walk en the chalk right up te devo tion. Hut we needn't lear, wife, ler up high ever all 1" mi Kye that still sees e'en the sparrows that fall. Ami no comet, though its lull Is eight trillions et miles, V ' Can de us :i hurt while Providence smiles. Hut its most ten o'clock, it Is growing quite late. And Annie. I sec, is still out at the gate, With her head pretty close te little Tem Hrewn These levers would court if the heavens came down ; Ami the tale Hrewn Is tcllm' te Ann, I've no doubt. Is as long as the one this comet shows out. They're "viewing the comet" ah! well let "em be. Such comets in life only once can they see. Ami I p".ik from experience, old wile, that you knew : Fer we learned it together in the long, long ego. That u lever can't find in a thousand night skies. Twe Mars that arc biighl as a maiden's two eves. ILL. F McSl'AKRASr. l'iiilnilcinhfci's Judge ISriggs. Times. J mine Hiijjys, who en Wednesday de livered a charge acquitting two election officers of all Manic in tempering with bal bal eots, has sentenced William Cannen te six months' imprisonment and one hundred dollars fine for the crime of corruptly at tempting te intimidate an elector. Cannen is an obscure jicrseu down in the First ward, a subordinate striker for Slack. He and Slack called en a shoemaker about election day and offered him some leather aprons and seventy-live cents te vote their ticket. The indictment against Slack was ignored, hut Cannen, being a fellow of no censtqucuce, unknown te the court and unable te retain influential counsel, was tried and convicted, and new is sternly sentenced, while men like Mahcr and Street, whose position only served te aggravate their crime, are honorable ac quitted. This is what we call justice. Society." says .ludge Uriggs, " divides itself into classes for and against parties se charged, and whatever juries may de and whatever judges may de is sure te meet the criticism of one or the ether of these parties." This is true. Society is at present divided into two classes, the ballet-box slu tiers and political roughs and corruptienists and the decent citizens. The former class is in very geed spirits ; if is the latter class that is criticising the proceedings of .ludge UriggR' court." l'esls Veung Again.
