Raising Watermelons!
CasBiusM. Clay, of Kentucky, furnishes
a short article en watermelons. He re
marks that "of all fruits of all climes, I
most esteem the watermelon." He adds
that when springs-are low and water is im
pure, this fruit is a sufficient and exceed
ingly wholesome drink; when se many
visitors a few years age te the Centennial
became sick by drinking the impure water
there, all who bought a slice of watermelon
whenever they wished te allay thirst, re
mained perfectly well. Mr. Clay sayB, en
the subject of soil and culture, that two
geed crop's can never be taken from the
same land in succession ; that any geed
corn laud will raise them ; that old manure
only should be applied ; that they should
be planted at distances of 10 by 10 feet
each way; the hills a feet deep, four
inches high, and three feet square ; remove
all weeds, but de net touch or move vines;
striped bugs are caught under shingles en
cool nights ; thiu te two plants for each
hill. The ripeness may be known by
thumping the melons with the finger nail,
when the dull sound, ceufiued te the rind,
will show that the melon is ripe. They
may be kept till Novetnber,er even till Jan
uary, but are best when fresh. Te cat
them, cut the long axis into equal halves,
furnish each guest with one-half and a
silver spoon, and all will thus have some
of the best part or the core. Ne careless
person should be admitted te the grounds,
as a vine is spoiled by being trodden upon.
Vlre Her a (.'nance.
Scrantan Republican.
An Old Maids' society is one of the insti
tutions of Lancaster county, and a contem
porary in noticing the last meeting of this
organization says the members enjoyed a
delightful time. "We see no geed reason
why the ancient maidens should net have
" a delightful time," if they se desire, as
well as anybody else. It is an honorable
thing te be an old maid, and an association
of such persons must be just lovely. They
are net annoyed by babies ; drunken hus
bands de net disturb the serenity of their
lives, and if they are affected with a yearn
ing for pets, why cats and canines are suf
ficiently numerous enough te be cheap.
Seme of the best women the world has
ever had belonged te that class known as
old maids. They have been the theme of
eloquent speeches, essays and sermons,
and have invariably deserved all the geed
things said of thorn. It would be bad for
the world if all its old maids should die or
get married suddenly.

A Uerder of i'cauuts.
A very pretty border for bedding out
plants, may be made by planting raw pea
nuts. A pint of peanuts will encircle a
three foeS bed. The bloom is insignifi
cant, but the dark green leaves of the vine
will preve a very nice contrast te the
showy bloom of the inside plants.
Heugh en the Judges.
Philadelphia Recerd.
A Lancaster lawyer, according te the
IsTELi.iOKN'cnu, wants a law enacted re
quiring the judges whose decisions are re
vised by the supreme court te pay the
costs of apM)a1. This would be rough en
the judges, but it would have the effect of
preventing incompetent men from aspir
iug te such responsible positions.

In cases of Dyspepsia, we can summon mini

A hard-working farmer had been afllicted
with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number ei
years; his stomach would reject almost every
kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con

restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread,
and as a beverage he used McGraiitt's Knet
Reer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new,
preached at times, and in his discourses elten
declaimed earnestly against all kinds, or strong
drink. When advised te trv

In his case, he looked up with astenl-uuiciit,
but after hearing et Its ueudertul etleets in

used the Brandy faithfully and sjiadilv; the
