xv pipe.
Fer tbe IXTELLIGEKCKB.
I've a snug little sanctum, quite quiet and
neat,
Where the muses and fancy have found a re
treat; Where chaos Is ruler, and order a dream.
And the whirls of opinion reign loosely su
preme. Thcie's a dusty old volume, still worthy a
can.
By the side of a tile from a house In Japan ;
And curious old stones, that geologists read.
Mysteriously ponder en time's clashing speed.
And a trl-colerei crome stuck up en the wall
Depicts all the greatness et great Csesar's fall ;
While ether strange knlck-nacks, grim and
dusty with time.
Tell el tropical wonders, or ether odd cllme.
But or all I love most, In this bric-a-brac ripe.
There Is nothing I cherish se much as my
pipe.
It's a common brown bowl, with a hard wood
en stem,
But it's richer by Jar than an orient gem.
Hew oft, when the shadows el the eve sink
below.
And the old droning beetle hums past te and
fro,
1'vu reamed in elysiums that but lancy can
dream,
With my pipe sending lertli its light, white,
scented stream !
'TIs a Arm, honest Irlend, this old suioker el
mine;
Net a truer en earth. I can surely opine.
I have told it tales secret of youth and of love,
And It cheered me with hope, as the stars gire
almvc.
And talcs tee el grieving it oft drew from my
heart.
Then pityingly seemed el my leclings a part.
But hew elt when discouraged when tailings
provoke,
It floats off my sorrows in a vapor el Binekc !
Then let trying griefs come, and all hearts be
untrue,
And the anguish of (allure u'libilien subdue;
There will btill linger by, et true friendship a
type.
That kindly old confidant that smoke colored
pipe ! . H. B. S.
The Celery-Crep.
Gcrmantewii Telegraph.
New is the time te be thinking about
getting in the celery-crop. The greuud at
least should be get ready and the first
rows for the very early be set out. We
have frequently done this in the last week
of June ; but for tlie general crop a later
date is preferred, say up te the middle el
July. It is seldom that very late planted
celery comes te much ; iu fact, when we
have set out any and it was never much
at a date later than that usually adopted
by experienced growers, we have never
had a yield worth having. At best tjic
stalk were short and stubby and tough.
All celery-growers are aware that tlie
ground cannot be tee strong for this plaut.
It has a very .small root aud can gather
euly a short supply of fertilizing sub
stances ; licncc the soil should be as rich
as possible in order that there shall be
within reach of the roots a needed amount
of nutriment.
Our method has uniformly been te set
the plants in single rows, as by it we have
always obtained the largest stalks, aud
have found them te blanch better and te
be tenderer and sweeter. Perhaps mere
in quantity can be obtained from planting
two, three or four rows together, but our
experience has been, se far as the supply
for domestic use is concerned, that the
sincle row is much te be preferred.
Many persons set their plants very near
ly en tne surface of the greuud, as they
would a cabbage or a tomato, aud depend
upon banking up the rows. This requires
a wide space between the rows te supply
the necessary soil, while any advantages
it may possess we never could discover.
Our plan is te dig a trench six te eight
inches in depth, aud twelve te fourteen
wide, then loosen the bottom thoroughly
te from six te eight iuches mere, and mix
thoroughly this soil with an abundance of
short, well-retted barnyard manure. The
plants should be watered early in the
morning aud in the evening, and shielded
from the sun from nine or ten te five
o'clock, until they are firmly established
and well-started te grew. In a few weeks
they should have applied, once or twice a
week, a liberal dose of strong manure
water. As the plants grew the soil should
be gradually drawn up te them ; and any
surplus or weak leaves should be removed.
As they increase in growth the amount of
soil should be also increased, always beiug
very careful that the "leader" of the
plant is kept clear" of auy obstruction.
This is particularly important when the
plant has pretty much its entire growth,
aud the " walling " or banking up process
begins.
Coel weather is no drawback te celery.
Iu fact iu October the plant grows mere
vigorously than at any ether time. Let it
be remembered that with a moist, rich
seii, aud careful attention, the celery-crop
is as certain as any ether ; but there is none
ether that will se markedly show the
effects of neglect and bad treatment. It
will simply result iu a waste of whatever
time and money may have been bestowed
upeu it.
Horses Trotters and Walkers.
Gcrmautewn Telegraph.
Every new and then there is a mania
for trotting horses. Even the practical
farmer gets the bit iu his mouth occasion
ally, aud likes te take a spurt in it light
vehicle with a two forty stepper, or as near
te that as geed luck may threw such an
animal iu his way in purchasing from a
ureve, as nas irequemiy eeeii tne case.
In the midst of this the question is asked.
"Is the trotting horse of any value te the
community?" and it has been liberally
discussed the last few years in our agri
cultural clubs. Tlie prevailing .idea
is, with many people, that the fast horse
is only useful te or valued by gamblers,
sporting men, &c. Hut is this se?
We think net. There are extremes in
everything, and it is a pity that the speed
of this noblest animal should be connect
ed with any such' thought as this. That
it is wrong te have our agricultural fairs
made subservient te horse-races, we ad
mit. Ne paper has taken stronger ground
against this than the Germantown Tele
graph. Indeed, we are net sure but we
might claim that the marked improve
ment en public sentiment en this subject
was inaugurated by us. Certainly we
seel that no paper has done mera for cer
recting public sentiment than we. Yet
there is no no mere reason why there
should net be fast horses than that there
should be slew ones ; and a fast runner
should be encouraged as much as a fast
walker. While we cordially agree, there
fore, with the preposition that any agri
cultural society, which makes the inter
est of the trotting horse paramount te
all ether interests, will sooner or
later be ruined, we are by no
means willing te admit that nothing
but evil comes from a fast horse. One
of the great sources of human admiration
for the horse is that he is fleeter and
stronger than we. We care little for the
walking horse, except as a mere- walker,
in which he is certainly valuable ; but it J
would be bar J te get up any enthusiasm
in a walking herse race. We never even
heard of a bet made en a walking horse,
though one might say it would be as easy
te get up bets en walkers as en trotters.
But it is net done. There is no admira
tion there ; no enthusiasm ; because there
is nothing remarkable. But we measure the
horse's value by the work he can de and his
neetness of feet. These are tbe Jegetirnate
subjects for admiration and encourage
ment. Oar only objection is that these
points, 'which ought te be of very limited
encouragement when there se many ether
departments of agriculture te care for.
are se often made at the beginning and
end of an exhibition. That's all. Yet
all must admit that there is no grander
sight than a race between two or mere re
markably fleet horses ; and if it were pos
sible that they could be conducted as a
mere event of sight-seeing at a stipulated
price, without betting or any of the evil
effects usually connected with these occa
sions, thousands of people would attend
them where hundreds new de, and will
inelv pav their dollar or five dollars te en
joy the thrilling interest of such an event.

restrict his diet te crackers ami stale bread,
and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet
Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new,
S reached at times, ami in his discourses often
eclalmcd earnestly against all kinds of strong
drink. When advised te trv
Relgart's Old Brandy,
In his case, he looked np witli astenisniiient,
but after hearing et its wendcrlnl etleets in
the cases of some of ids near acquaintances, he
at last consented te fellow our advice. He

first bottle giving him an appetite, and before
the second was taken he was a sound man. with
a stomach capable of digest! ng any thing which
