EAST END NEWS.
THE STOUm IN TIIE EARLS.
Darns Burned The Frmen' tVe.k-xhe
Outlook for ToDacce.
Cedar Lane Correspondence.
On buuday morning a heavy rain .storm
passed ever this section accompanied by
sharp lightning and heavy thunder.
Quite a number of trees were struck; 3Ir.
Samuel Dague's barn was struck and
burned te the ground. It is situated
about two miles south of New Helland.
He managed te save all the live stock, but
all the ether contents were consumed
consisting of 10 tens of hay, about 25
bushels or wheat, from 50 te 100 bushels
of shelled corn, straw, reaper, threshing
machine, corn sheller, &c. There is an
insurance in the Lancaster County
Mutual, but net sufficient te cover
the less. Mr. Dague appears te be
very unfortunate in regard te lire. About
four years age his house was burned with
all its contents, new the barn. An orchard
surrounded the burnt bam and the green
apples are roasted en the trees. The
whole orchard is killed by the heat. Mr.
Daguc himself received a severe shock
from the stroke, knocking him from a
chair en which he was seated, reading at
the time. Mr. Israel Seldomndge's barn,
en Ilia farm adjoining Hague's, was also
struck, but the only damage done it was
splintering one gable end. Several trees
en the same farm were also shattered te
pieces. There was a large barn in
the vicinity of l.rownstewn burned at the
same time.
The fanners are all busy making hay.
The eiep in this section is light, and new
hay therefore commands a geed price.
Wheat is beginning te color, but will net
be lit te harvest, for some time te conic.
Tobacco is starting finely One thing is
very, nticcable in the tobacco crop, viz :
where phosphate were used the crop is
much further advanced than where
manure alone was depended upeu.
Mechanics in this neighborhood have
been kept very busy, as there have been
mere new buildings erected and new in
the course of erection than there has been
in any one season for a number of years.
Geedville is improving rapidly, quite a
number of private residences arc in the
ceurse of erection, and the Scnscnig hard
ware Ce., are enlarging and remodeling
their store. When linished it will be one
of the imndseinest business houses in the
eastern end of the county.
Mr. W. H. Svfcigart, of Cedar Lane, is
also adding a story te his warehouse and
is titling up a very line eilice, as his pres
ent eliicc is tee small te accommodate his
increasing business. Gee. A. Wallace, of
Jiast Karl, is also about te enlarge his
building. A great many farmeis are
building large and commodious tobacco
sheds t accommodate the present crop.
Mr. Sweigart, of Cedar Lane, is about te
build a large tobacco packing house at his
place, which will be for rent. It is a
splendid point for some party who wishes
teeng.ige in tobacco paekiu::, and rent
asked will be very reasonable, and the
building will be built te suit the renter.
Mr. Davis Leaman, carpenter anil
builder of this place, .linished his new
house and moved into it about a week age.
Mr. Jeremiah Urendle is about erecting a
new barn en his farm, near Cedar Lane
station.
Horses have been in very fair demand
ami aie commanding faucy figures. Mr.
Wm. Heed has purchased a fast pacing
maie and is new prepared te dust his
friends.
M. II. G:ubc is doing a heavy business
in machinery. He sells the celebrated
Champien reaper aud mower, besides
ether machinery.
The New Helland bank is new in active
operation, and is doing a lleurishiug busi
ness for a new institution. It most cer
tainly is a great convenience for business
men of the eastern end, and should the
newly proposed railroad become a reality.
New Helland will receive another boost
that will make her citizens anxious te
change the village into a borough.
The bain burned near Urownstewn,
referred te by our correspondent, was
likely that of Samuel Apple, about two
miles west of Knhrata, which was struck
by lightning and binned te the ground
with all its contents except the live stock.
Less about $1,501.
