"BILLY THE KID. "
A Bey Desperado's Apalllng Recerd of
Crime.
Cleveland Leader.
The de'mes of a noted boy desperado,
known by the euphonious title of "Billy
the Kid, " have been frequently chronicled
in the telegraphic columns. "Billy the
Kid " is bound te achieve even mere fame
than the noted Wild Bill, -who, according
te western lore, used te kill a man or two
before breakfast. Billy's field of opera
tions had been mostly confined te the
bread prairies of that boundless state,
New Mexico. Billy is a terror and Mr.
Lute Wilcox of the Las Vegas, N. M.,
Daily Optic, new visiting in this city,
knows all about the terror of the plains.
This coming te the cars of a Leader man,
he sought out the far western journalist,
subjected him te the torture of an inter
view and elicited the following facts :
"The kid," according te report, was
once a New Yerk bootblack. Heading
dime novels and trashy story papers turned
his head, and he bought a revolver and
started for the boundless West. On the
way he lingered long enough in Ohie te
kill the first man, after which he made
tracks for Texas, where he became a cow
boy. His deadly skill as a marksnau and
his unqucnchable desire for gore seen
gave him the name and fame he coveted
that of a brutal desperado. He was one
of the leaders iu the Liuceln county, New
Mexico, war, killing several men. After
this light was ever he became the leader
of a gang of outlaws and committed mur
derous atrocities. Se offensive did his
operations become that the governor of
the state offered five hundred dollars re
ward for his capture. The citizens com
bined te help the officers of the law briug
the fugitive te justice, and after a hard
chase of two weeks he was captured and
jailed. He, with four companions, was
tried at Mcssilla, N. M., and sentenced te
be hung en May 3, 1881. While in jail he
confessed te Mr. Wilcox that he had killed
no less than 32 men. "The Kid" is less
than 21 years of age, tall and slender, with
blue eyes and a lcardless face.
He swore that he would ucver swing,
and declared that he would break jail, and
this act he successfully accomplished, en
the night of April SO.
He had warned the authorities that he
would make his escape, remarking, "Yeu
knew, boys, that iu order te make this
hangiug a success you must have me there,
and I don't intend te be present." He
struck his guard ever the head with the
heavy shackles that were en his wrists, and
then snatching the revolver from the belt
of the guard he quickly ended the lattcr's
life with a bullet. He then coolly walked
up te the house, just across the street,
where the ether guard lived, and picking
up a shotgun, seated himself te await the
guard's return. A few moments later the
latter, unconscious of any danger, strolled
toward the house. A voice called out,
"Helle, old fellow!" The guard
looked up and saw Billy the Kid
with the gun in his hand. A
second later there was a loud report and
the guard staggcred dying from a wound in
the side. Te make sure of his work Billy
sent the contents of the ether barrel into
the guard's bedv. This made the second
man that he had killed within ten minutes.
Dropping the shotgun he entered a xpar
room which was used for storing supplies
and armed himself with half a dozeu six
shooters, a Winchester repeating rifle and
all the amunitien he could conveniently
carry. The report of the gun had caused
quite a number of people te assemble
around the building, and when Billy ap
peared en t'ie parch eveiy man reached for
his pistol. With his Winchester riile at
his side, net raising it te his shoulder,
Billy began te sheet and tb.9 men began te
scatter.
" I am lighting the whole world for my
Use," said he, " and I mean business."
He then ordered one of the men te get him
a horse "and a lile. He mounted the
former and with the latter filed off the
shackles en one of his legs, and, net step
ping te remove the ether, tied the severed
manacle with ils chain le his belt se that
it should net impede his movements. Net
aina'i iu the crowd dared te draw a bead
en him, and, saying that he did net intend
te steal the herse and would return it.
Billy started out of town en a gallop. Be
fore he had gene far the horse " bucked "
and threw him. He jumped up, and at
the muzzle of his pistol compelled ene of
the men te catch his horse, which he re re
meuutcd and rede away, and has net
since been seen or heard of. It seems
almost incredible that one man could take
possession of a town and make his escape
in the face of a score of armed men ; but
such is the fact.
Billy is said te be a master of thojuse of
the revolver. He is a dead shot and can
sheet quicker than any man in New Mex
ico. He can use an ordinary Celt's revol
ver as quickly as another man can a self self
ceckiug pisteL He sheets with his left
hand as accurately as ha does with his
right, and his aim with a revolver in each
hand, sheeting simultaneously, is unerring.
With a Winchester rifle he can sheet as
well with the gun at his side, without ap
parently taking any aim as most men can
in the usual way. His equal for the quick
and unerring use of firearms has never
been known in New Yerk.
Since coming te Cleveland, said Mr. Wil
cox, I hear that the Kid since his daring
escapd has killed three mere men who were
in the employ of Jehn Chisum, the cattle
king. The cow boys, four in number.
were seated, se says a report, around a fire
when " the Kid" rede up -and inquired,
" are you working for old Jehn Chisum ?"
" Yes," was the reply. ' " Then here's
your pay !" A bullet from the Kid's pistol
pierced the man's brains at the same mo
ment Seeing the murder of their com
rade, the ether cowboys sprang te their
feet, but before they could draw their sx
shooters that of the Kid had exploded
twice again, and' two mere of the cowboys
fell. Pulling down en the ene remaining
the murderer shouted "Holdup." The
command was promptly obeyed. " New,"
continued Billy, " I want you te live
te take a message te old Jehn Chisum
for me. Tell him during the Lincoln coun
ty war he premised te pay me five dol
lars a day for fighting for him. I fought
for him and never get a cent. New
I intend te kill his men whenever I meet
them, giving him credit for five dollars
every time I drop one until the debt is
squared ; and if I happen te meet him be
fore I will kill him and call the whole ac
count settled. All I am living for new is
te get even with my enemies, and I expect
te be in the country until I de that."

story and secured assistance te bury the
bodies of the murdered men. Heavy re
wards are out for the Kid, but there seems
te be but ene man in all that section with
nerve enough te fellow the Kid, and that
is the sheriff, Pat Garrett, who is en bis
trail, and unless killed himself will get the
Kid eventually.

The following is the full text of a law
passed by the Legislature and signed by
Gov. Heyt :
Section 1. That if the proprietor,
keener. lessee or manazcr of any saloon,
hotel, tavern, inn, billiard room or ether
place of resort or entertainment shall keep,
maintain or permit te be played upon his
premises, or in connection therewith, or
having passage or communication te or
with the same, the game, or amusement of
peel with balls or anyether game of chance,
the result or price of forfeiture of
payment in any form of such
game or amusement shall be by drinks
of vinous, spirituous, or malt or
brewed liquors, or any admixture thereof,
he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor
and upon conviction thereof shall be sen
tenced for the first offense te pay a fine of
$100 and te undergo an imprisonment of
net less than ninety days, and for the
second elfense te pay a fine of $300 and te
undergo an imprisonment of net less than
one year ; any license granted for the
keeping of any such saloon, hotel, inn, bil
liard room or ether place of resort or
amusement shall, upon such second con
viction, be declared null and void by the
court in which the said second effensa
shall be tried.
