LIGHTING THE CITY.
The Glebe Company Gets the Contract
at 23.
Chas. C. Yeaton, agent of the Automat
ic gaslight comeany, of New Yerk, ar
rived in this city last evening, in compli
ance with a request of A. It. Barr, esq.,
chairman of the lamp committee, who
some days age visited New Yerk for the
pupesc of seeing the operation of the Au
tomatic lamp and comparing its merits
with these of the Pennsylvania Glebe
lamp, of Philadelphia, which the city
councils have substituted for the street gas
lamps. Mr. Yeaton bieught with him one
of the Automatic lamps, and before an in
formal gathering of the lamp committee
and councilmen net members of the corn
mittee, exhibited it in the council cham
ber, where a free expression of
opinion was indulged. Mr. Yeaton
was present aud explained its work
ings for the information of the council
men. Mr. Bobinsen, the representative of
the Glebe company, was also present. It
may be remarked that the original bid of
the Automatic company was $21 per lamp
per annum, whilst that of the Glebe com
pany was $24.50. Councils nevertheless,
iu view of the known merits of the Glebe
lamp, directed the lamp committee te
enter rhte a contract with that company
"en the best possible terms," as has
already appeared in these columns.
Mr. Bobinsen reduced his bid te $23.50,
but the committee held off for $23, te
which that gentleman was leth te accede,
and se the contract hung lire. Saturday
evening, however, Mr. Bobinsen- was in
the city ready te close the agreement at
the terms demanded by the cemmitter.
A quorum could net be get together, how
ever, and again the closing of the bar
gain was deferred. Meanwhile, Chairman
liarr, havin'g seen the virtues of the Auto
matic Limp' was endeavoring te impress
upon his colleagues of the committee the
propriety of contracting with that com cem
patiy, claiming that it would be a saving of
the "matter of $1,000 te the city, and at tl:e
same time pievide a much Handsomer and
mere ornamental lamp than the Glebe con
cern, with which councils bad ordered the
contract te be made, aim as a Deve stated
he secured the presence of the Automatic
representative for the purpose of demon
strating his opinion.
The committee met at 1 o'clock this
afternoon in the full light of an Automate
lamp, which burned brilliantly upon the
president's desk iu common council
chamber. All the, members of the
committee -Messrs. Smeych, White.
Philip Zcchcr and Barr, chairman were
present, and Messrs. Bebin ;ou aud Yeaton,
representatives of the rival bidTlcrs, were
also upon the fleer. Without ado, Mr.
White moved that the contract be given
te the Glebe company at $23 per lamp per
annum, stating that he understood Mr.
Bobinsen was willing te contract at that
price. The chairman's suggestion that
Mr. Yeaton ought te be given another
chance te explain the merits of his lamp
elicited from Mr. Smeych a motion that
he be heard. A second was net heard,
and Mr. White insisted upon his motion
being put, and it was agreed te, Messrs.
White and Zechcr voting aye, Mr. Barr
no. aud Mr. Smeych net voting.
Chairman Ban asserts hisdeterminaticn
te carry the matter te council, and te se
cure a special meeting of the body te ic ic
rensidci; its former action. He declined
te append his signature te a communica
tion te the Glebe company setting forth
its action iu awarding the contract.
Messrs. Smeych, White and Zcchcr signed
the paper.
Mr. yeaten, of the Automatic company,
expresses a purpose te contest the author
ity of the city government te award the
contract te a bidder whose bid is mani
festly se much higher than his company's,
after popes.ils had been publicly a? iced
for aud he had fairly shown the superior
ity of his light. When the attention of
Mr. Yeaton was called te the fact that the
Glebe man had in his possession and had
shown te the lamp committee a document
signed by Yeaton, as the constituted agent
of the Automatic company, transferring te
the Glebe company all right te the use
of the Automatic bin ner for the term of
five years, iu consideration of a certain
sum en money, Mr. Yeaton replied that
iu said agreement it is expressly stipulated
that the Glebe company shall put forth its
best efi'eils te encourage the general use
of the Automatic lamp and estab
lish it in the market. This. Mr.
Yeaton say.--, the Glebe company has
net done, but se far from complying with
the agreement, its representatives have
done all iu their power te injure its repu
tation, and by their action have annulled
the bargain. Mr. Robinson's answer te
the allegations of Mr. Ycateu is, briefly,
that having tested the merits of the Ante"!
malic burner, his company found it unsatis
factory, aud unwilling te endanger the
business by it use they discontinued
it. In New Bedford, Mass., Cape
May, N. J., and at vatieus ether places,
where they were tried, the experiment
proved a failure, and they had te Ins taken
down, and ethers substituted. Yeaton's
rejoinder is that in New Bedford political
considerations occasioned the discontin
uance of his lamp, while at Cape Jlay, the
Glebe company, as agent efthe Automatic
burner, had wilfully neglected the lamps,
thus causing them te act unsatisfactorily.
Anil thus the war of words gees en, and
the claims and counter-claims have occu
pied the greater part of the lamp commit
tee's time and attention for several weeks,
with the result as above reported.

ANOTHER TICHBOBNE.
A Man who Is Believed te be the-Real Reger.
The San Francisce Examiner publishes an
interview with Gen. W. H. L. Barnes, the
general purport of which is that the real
Reger Tichbernc lias at length turned up,
and has unfolded his story te Gen. Barnes.
In the interview the latter confirms the re
port that the alleged Tichberne came te.
him for certain information as te hew he
could best obtain documentary evidence te
show that he bad never been in Rie de
Janeiro, had never left there in the vessel
Bella, and had never been wrecked and
picked up by the Osprey, as stated by
Arthus Orten, the Tichberne claimant.
Gen. Barnes subjected his visitor te a rig
orous examination of several days' dura
tion, during which he told se straight a
story, including many points in which
Orten failed, and ether points that did net
come out in the trial, and exhibited physi
cally such identity with the lest heir, that
Gen. Barnes says he has reluctantly ar
rived at the conclusion that either the true
Tichberne has turned up or that the man
in question is the most adroit swindler be
has ever met in a long course of practice.
The Duke of Sutherland and Dr. Kussell
also had an interview with the man, and a
full statement of the case has been mailed
te England.
Tichbernc says that he has been for a
great portion of the time in the United
States ; that he served through the war ;
was married in Brooklyn, N. Y.. and is
new living near Sin Diege, but will be in
the city iiain in a few days. He says
that his silence is the result of a deter
mination en bis part te remain incognito
for a certain number of years, new
elapsed, and this determination was
brought about by a deep feeling of chagrin
at the opposition te his marriage with his
cousin Kate. The question of being able
te establish his identity does net seem te
give him the slightest concern, the sole
object of his call en Gen. Barnes being te
obtain evidence te show the falsity 'of the
report regarding the Rie de Janeiro epi
sode. MARKETS.
