Reports en the condition of the young
crops being called for, a number of
members from different sections of the
county responded. Frem their reports
we learn that the late copious rains have
greatly forwarded the growth of almost 1
everything, ihe early sewn wheat is a
geed deaf damaged by the fly and rust,
and will net, perhaps, yield mere than 15
bushels te the acre, en an average, while
the later sewn will yield a fnll crop. The
grass, which early in the season was se
backward and unpromising, has improved
greatly,-but the hay crop pn the whole
will be short. Cern has been much dam
aged by the cut worm, but has been re
planted and is growing finely. Tite young
tobacco, nearly all of which has been
planted, never looked better. Potatoes
leek well, but in some sections have been
visited by the Colerado beetle ; and Calvin
Cooper has found that tobacco leaves
steeped in water and sprinkled ever the
plants, is a spccilic against their ravages.
There will be very few peaches in any sec
tion of the county ; the cherries have
fallen off greatly and there will be a rather
short crop of apples ; pears and grapes
premise a large yield, and small fruits of
all kinds arc abundant. Notwithstanding
the severity of the past winter insects of
all kinds appear te be mere numerous than
ever.
M. IX Kendig read a paper in which
was given the results of his experiments
in cultivating corn.
Experiments Wltn Cern.
When this society offered a premium
for the largest and best yield of corn from
five acres' crop of '80 1 concluded te give
it a trial, but getting no competition (as
no one entered) I will here, with your in
dulgence, give the result of my experi
ence. The land was a sandy loam, lying
in clever two years, the first crops of which
were mown and taken off each year while
the second were allowed te remain te en
rich the roil. About 12 tons.ef barnyard
manure scattered ever the poorest spots
were ploughed the beginning of March te
the depth of seven inches. 100 bushels et
fresh lime per acre was then applied, even
ly distributed ever the surface, and thor
oughly incorporated into the soil with a
cultivator, which was passed ever four
times, making the ground in a most ex
cellent condition for planting.
It was then marked off with a scorer
both ways, or chequered, rows 3 feet 4
inches apart, and planted with the hoc en
the 3d and 4th day of May, three grains le
a hill. The soil being very loose, the roller
was passed ever lengthwise te firm it down
and in six days it was up nicely. When
about a feet high it was thinned out te two
stalks te the hill, always removing the in
ferior, which made it very uniform, giving
each stalk an equal chance. The ground
having beiug thoroughly worked up and
pulverized before planting after culti
vatien was very easy ami simple. An
occasional harrowing, te keep the ground
loose and mellow, was all it received. Ne
hoc in the field all season except in plant
ing time. The plot contained G acres and
122 perches and yielded 005 bushels of
dry, shelled corn, actual measurement, or
at the rate of 89 V bushels te the acre. It
is only fair te state here that two sides of
it were bordered by locust about 40 feet
high, which reduced the entire yield at
least 25 or 30 b ushels.
Casper Hitler, who was prevented from
being present, .sent in an interesting paper
en "Forestry " which was read.
The essay was discussed by Dr. Greene,
J. C. Linville, Calvin Cooper aud ethers.
Jehnsen Miller read a paper en the sub
ject of a proposed agricultural fair, which
he thought could be made a success if
proper means were taken te enlist ill its
behalf the material assistance of the busi
ness men ; but he was utterly hestile te
permitting horse racing, liquor selling,
peel selling, or any kind of gambling en
the ground. He thought a higher premium
should be offered for a geed cow than for
a fast trotter. We arc a conscientious
Christian community and take mere inter
est in the productions of our geed old
housewives than in the time made by
horses driven alinest te death.
Dr. Gicen endorsed what Mr. Miller had
said aud believed a great fair could be
gotten up without any of the objectionable
features referred te. But the work must
be undertaken energetically and carried
out methodically. He had spoken le
many of our people, and they would no
doubt subscribe liberally te make it a
success. The people wanted a fair and if
the project were euce get under way it
would bike like wild fire.
President Witmer said that what the
society needed was some one or mere who
would take held of the matter, work
vigorously and get money te carry the
fair through. Talking will de no good geed
money is what is wanted.
After some fin titer discussion by Messrs.
Cooper, Linville, Miller and Green, the
last named gentleman- moved te postpone
the consideration of a-fair until next year,
and the motion was agreed te.
Honorary Members.
After a long discussion as te the best
means of securing a larger attendance at
the meetings; of the society and a greater
interest in its precccdings'a motion was
adopted that the editors and publishers of
the Intelligencer, Examiner, New Era,
Inquirer and Velkffrcund be elected as
honorary members in consideration of the
valuable services they have rendered the
society by publishing its proceedings se
fully.
The president suggested that certificates
of honorary membership should be pro
cured and presented. A motion te that
effect was carried.
On motion of Mr. Linville Isaac Bioemcll
of Salisbury was elected an active member
of the society.
Adjourned.
Patents Granted.
On Saturday, June 11, a patent was
granted te Peter L. Eplcr, of Elizabc'h Elizabc'h
tewn. Ter an "Automatic railroad switch."
The novelty consists in the manner in
which cars open the switch in passing out
into the main track and the gearing for
opening the same for shifting from the
main track te the siding.
On the same day a patent was also
granted te C. W. Myers, of Lincoln, for
an " automatic cut-off for rain cisterns'
These cut-offs prevent the dirty water
which has washed the dust from the reef",
being carried into the cistern, and after
the reef is thoroughly cleaned turns the
water into the cistern. They also enable
the supply of water te be regulated,
Thrs3 patents were secured through
Win. B, Uerhart, solicitor of patents.

SHALL WE
Thcre is in Philadelphia a clothing house which has no double in all the
world. The world is full of clothing houses ; and it is a geed deal te say that
one is unlike all the rest.
First, in its dealing ; and it is surprising that one house should differ' much
from another.- Selling clothing is se simple a matter, that it is likely, one
would suppose, te be done in very much the same way in Philadelphia, New
Yerk and Londen. But Philadelphia is ahead ; and, curiously enough, one
house in Philadelphia is ahead of all the rest.
Te be ahead in dealing is te deal en a higher piano in a mere liberal way, te
give the buyer mere well founded confidence without less of the merchant's
safety. This Philadelwhia clothing heuse says te a stranger : '.' We want te
deal with exact justice. We want what belongs te us, viz., a fair profit ; and
we want you fe have what belongs te you, viz., a liberal money's-worth. Our
way te arrive at a result is te mark the price en everything we sell, which
price 'is absolute ; and te let you buy what you like, go away and think the
bargain ever, and come and trade back, if you want te. We find by experi
ence that this liberality is harmless te us. Of course, you like it. Ami it
makes quick and ready dealing. We don't want you te bring back what you
buy it would cost us money every time ; but we would rather you would
bring back, than keep, what you don't like. Se, we try te see that you get at
first what you will like the better, the mere you knew of it. This is really
the whole philosephypf our dealing."
Second, in its goods the amount and variety of them. There are ether
houses where excellent clothing is kept, and a great de.il of it ; but there is
none, anywhere, that keeps se much. The dealing related above has wen the
largest trade the world has yet seen. Te supply such a trade great quantity
and variety of clothing are required ; and these in turn increase the trade, be
cause everybody likes te cheese out of many things, rather than out of a few.
This is the country of ready-made clothing. Great Britain makes the most
of any European country; but there is net in all Londen any clothing busi
ness a quarter as large as that of .Oak Hall. New Yerk has several large
clothing businesses; but no ene nearly equal te that or Oak Hall ; Bosten
likewise.
Loek back twenty years ! Have we done you geed service, or net? But
that is net what we had in mind ; we were thinking of the clothes you are
going te buy. Shall we sell them '.
