LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER. MONDAY, JUNE 13, 1881. icastcr Intelligencer. VC MONDAY EVENING, JUNE 13, 1881. Tobacco. heed Leaf and Havana. U. P. Tobacco Journal. The closing remarks in our last week's lepert-were: "Judging from the 'invest ment' spirit with which jobbers, as well as manufacturers, are imuuuu, muuci ku.&m sales of '80 tobacco will take place short ly " and further large sales have taken place. Ne less than 3,000 cases of '80 Pennsylvania changed hands this -week, the bulk of it being taken by manufac turers. A sale of 1,400 cases created quite a burprise. It was te a manufacturing firm which heretofore was estimated as but a medium-sized one, possessing neither much capital nor extensive manufacturing facilities. A sale of 1,400 cases, there fore, te such a concern was a novelty. These familiar with the conditions of the nlz sale say that the tobacco was sold subject te an agreement that 100 cases be delivered each month. This way of doing business is calculated te instigate ether medium sized manufacturers te fellow suit, and we should net be surprised te see them come forward and secure sufficient of one kind of tobacco te last them a year or longer in this way. The large packer will no doubt prefer it. The jobber, who might pay sooner thau the sort of manu facturers referred te, is net, however, nuite se willinir te pay the profit de manded. A few hundred eases of '80 Ilousatenic were sold te a jobbing firm. . In old tobac cos geed activity prevailed, with prices firm. The total sales amounted te about 1,100 cases, mostly '79 Pennsylvania. The prices for the '80 Pennsylvania sold are given at 10 te 20 cents. Havana Market quiet. Very few sales of any magnitude were reported. Prices unchanged. (Jans' Rf-perr, Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J. S. Gans' Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending June 13, 1881 : 300 cases 1880 Pennsylvania, asserted lets, 15 te 20c ; 400 cases 1879 Pennsylva nia, asserted lets, 18 te 22)c ; wrappers 19 te 40c ; 378 cases 1880 New England, 10 te 22c ; 100 cases 1879 New England, 10 te 20c ; 100 cases 1880 Ohie, p. t. Total, 4,050 cases. Trade Nete. The Leaf reports the Philadelphia mar ket as fellows : "Owing te the abseuce of desirable stock sales for the past week have been light, but the fortunate dealer who lias the needed raw material is happy, us the profit is handsome. The attention of our packers is at present riveted en Lancaster county." The New Yerk market is briefly reported thus by Fisher & Bre : There has been a brisk demand for seed leaf, especially for new Pennsylvania. The market mav be regarded as an active euc. buying being liberal and the feeling of the trade buoy ant te an unusual degrcc. All the indica tiens point toward a lively trade in tins staple this season. Mr.JLOppcnheimer sold last week a let of 725 cases of 1880 Pennsylvania te L. Simons & Bre.: Mr. I. Nisscn, tobacco broker, sold 1,400 cases new Pennsylvania leaf for Messrs. Fatnian & Ce. te It. Menne & Bre., and for Messrs. Charles Spitzucr & Sen GOG cases Pennsylvania te Messrs. Brown & Earle ; Spear & Held bold 100 cases '79 Pa. te ItokeliI & llaukin ; a packing of 300 cases of '80 Pa. was sold by . Falk & Bre. te E. Bach & Sen. "1 Am All Plajed Out" Is a common complaint. The world is full of clothing houses ; and it is a geed deal te say that one is unlike all the. rest. First, in its dealing ; and it is surprising that ene house should differ much from another. Selling clothing is se simple a matter, that it is likely, one would suppose, te be done in very much the same way in Philadelphia, New Yerk and Londen. But Philadelphia is ahead ; and, curiously enough, one house in Philadelphia is ahead of all the rest. Te be ahead in dealing is te deal en a higher piano in a mere liberal way, te give the buyer mero well founded ceulidcncc without less of the merchant's safety. This Philadelwhia clothing house says te a stranger : " We want te deal with czaet justice. We want what belongs te us, viz., a f?ir prellt ; and we want you te have what belongs te you, viz., a liberal money's-worth. Our way te arrive at a result is te mark the price en everything we sell, which price is absolute ; and te let you buy what you like, go away and think the bargain ever, and come and trade back, if you want te. We find by experi ence that this liberality is harmless te us. Of course, you like it. And it makes quiek and ready dealing. We don't want you te bring back what you buy it would cost us money every time ; but we would rather you would bring back, than keep, what you don't like. S., we try te see that you get at first what you will like the better, the mere you knew of it. This is really the whole philosophy of our dealing." Second, in its goods the amount and variety of them. There are ether houses where excellent clothing is kept, and a great deal- of it ; but there is none, anywhere, that keeps se much. The dealing related above has wen the largest trade the world has yet seen. Te supply stieh a trade great quantity and variety of clothing are required ; and these in turn inorcase the trade, be cause everybody likes te cheese out of many things, rather than out of a few. This is the country of ready-made olething. Great Britaiu makes the most of any European country ; but there is net in all Londen any clothing busi ness a quarter as large as that of Oak Hall. New Yerk has several large clothing businesses ; but no one nearly equal te that of Oak Hall ; Bosten likewise. Loek back twenty years ! Have wc done you geed service, or net?
