LANCASTER DAILUJOTETI.TGENCER, THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 1881. jjer GOODS. TMArjilZMS' aviut. Lancaster intelligencer. MEDICAL. CLOTMUTB. N" ;T UOOK TO THE COURT BOUaE. THURSDAY EVENING, JUNE 9, 188L FARMER AMD GARDENER. Ike First ThlBBiBC-Uat of FralL Gcrmantewn Telegraph. Pear-growers should bear in mind that the time is at hand when they most be thinking abeat thinning-eat their crops, This year-will probably require it mere thoroughly than most years, because the yield premises te be very heavy, and if the trees are allowed te overbear they may net recover from it for two, three, or four years. We have had trees which took five years te restore them te their original vigor and productiveness. De net be afraid that you will lese even in quantity by a free thinning-out. We have at times re moved at least three-fourths of the crop, and found afterward that the crop would have withstood mere with advantage, lue varieties of pears'mest liable te overbear are the Belle Lucrative, Lawrence, Ott, Anjou, Rutland, Shelden, Gleut Merceau, Louise Benne, Sieulle, Diel, Bartlett, Gif fard, &c The second thinning-out should take place when the fruit is about one third grown, when care should be observed te select all the specimens that are net entirely of smooth skin and de net hang straight en the stem. All these are mere or less defective. Budding. This is the time when we like te call the attention of farmers and gardeners te the work of budding their fruit trees. Theso who were te much hurried in their spring work te attend te it in April and May, can new make up for lest time by resort ing te this mode of increasing the variety and amount of the orchard product. Bnddinr can new be done, and continued through this month, July and forepart of August. It is net a difficult as grafting, but like the latter it must be understood just hew it is te be done, though this is easy te de by giving a little attention hew ethers de it. Te cut a bud from the parent branch it should take about an inch and a-half of the bark and a thin slice of tbe weed for three-fourths of the length of the bark, the bud being about in the centre : and in setting it cut a slit in the bark of the tree only, say two inches in length, and at the ' top make a cut across the slit ; then care fully raise the bark up with the kmle and insert in it the bud. De it as neatly as possible. Then wrap around the entire slit and up te the bud bass matting, using strips about a feet long and half an inch in width, and tic in a knot. Of course the branch or stock in which the bud is set re mains just as it was before, no topping or cutting off. The budding of peach trees is best de ferred until August, and is always adopt ed instead of grafting, which is net re commended for this fruit. Wnat About Liquid Manure? It has net been many years since that there was quite a furor about the use of liquid manure as a fertilizer; and this was quite sensibly added te by the statements made of it by the celebrated " Londen farmer," Alderman Hcchi, who even went se far as te invent an apparatus te haul it in and sprinkle it ever his land. We all remember or should remember hew he went en" about it. It was the best way te apply manure. There were the crops ; here were the figures. There could be no doubt about it. It was no waste te manure te have the best of its matter washed out of it, if only the liquid waste could be collected in tanks and pumped into liquid manure carts and hauled ever the ground ; or even pumped back again te the manure-heap from which it had been washed and se en and se en. The subject was taken up in this country and a great deal was written about it and discussed at farmers' clubs, &c. Few had any experience. They wrote about it and recemmeded it simpyl because the matter had been taken up se resolutely in England and vouched for by what was at the time considered the high est authority. But it turned out te be all. fallacious ; in the first place, because no geed farmer, in places where manure is valuable, cares te have his manure washed in this way, but builds a reef and covers it from rain ; and in the next place it djecs net pay te build cisterns, invest in pumps and buy bread-wheeled carts for the sake of distributing a few gallons of liquid ma nure. Water is heavy te carry ; and the hauling of a gallon for the sake of a tea spoonful of nutritious matter, is an ap surdity few American farmers would be guilty of. But it was said there were the figures. Se there were as te actual pro ducts ; but this is net the way te calculate farm profits. That a piece of land watered with liquid manure will yield mere than a piece manured in the regular way, may be all true enough ; but if it cost treble for deubje the profit it had better be left alone. In fact, the liquid manure idea as an clement in profitable farming seems te have departed here. We seldom sec the old time articles new. Even in Eng land it seems te be en its last legs. The whole paraphernalia of tanks, water carts, and-se-forth, says the Londen Agrictillural Gazette, are the racre toys of farming ; and se said we, long, long age. The Size or tne Varai. It is true enough that we cannot have immense returns from our farm if we de net have a commensurate amount of land. We cannot expect te garner six or eight hundred bushels of wheat, rye, corn, etc., from a fifty-acre farm. Nevertheless the profits from a farm are net always, or very frequently, the result of very large farms. It is the thorough cultivation of the land we have, and making the very best of everything that the profit comes in. We may have hundreds of acres of land, but it may be unproductive for the reason that we de net possess the means of properly enriching it. . Hence, while we may have capital enough te run a moderate farm in the very best man ner, causing it te yield double the crops that we could leek for per acre from five or six times the quantity of land, we should utterly fail in making the larger farm profitable at all; but en the ether hand we should find it year after year making us poorer and poorer, until we should be completely swamped by it. Just leek at this simple statement : If a capital of five thousand dollars, expended in the cultiva tion of two hundred acres, will only yield a profit of five hundred dollars, while if it were applied te one hundred acres it would produce ,a profit of one thousand dollars, it is clear that the income would be increased by diminishing by one-half the quantity of the land. We have known many a farmer who has been bankrupted ey a large farm, but who might have acquired a comfortable com petency en one-half the number of acres. Farmers, as a rule, strive te own a large tract of land, without considering that they have net the capital te work it as it should be ; and that unless it is se worked it must drag them down instead of build ing them up. The prudent man should start only with men a sized farm as he possesses the means of conducting in such a way that it will produce him the largest return from the capital invested He will sec, then, that he is early gaining pecuniary strength, and this will relieve him firem any fears that he will be likely te go down-hill, while the facts are before him as clearly as they arc undeniably, that he is steadily laying the foundation for his prosperity and increasing success. Hence, let us say in conclusion, that if a farmer has ene hundred acres, it would be much better for him te put the price of another hundred en it, than te buy one hundred mere and make the same labor produce double the crops, and net have double labor for double crops as we se frequently sec te be the result. Strawberries. Wfeere They Grew, Md tbe JCaaaer or Their Transportation . Bosten Glebe. The Wilsen is at present the leading market berry, nine-tenths of the supply shipped from all parts of the United States being of this variety. It is famil iar te all with its Drignt coier, giuiv,u. skin, generally conical in shape and about an inch in length. The Downing is sim ilar in color and size, but is smaller and net quite as hard. This has been planted by some of the mere progressive farmers who wish te give it a fair trial with the Wilsen: The Jucunda is a conical, fine- flavored, large berry, requiring high cul ture. Triempbe de Gand is much like the Jucunda, but is mero irregular in shape. Seth Boyden is very large, conical, dark red, of geed flavor, sweet, vigorous and prolific The bliarpiess, ene 01 me larg est varieties, has immense irregularly shaped, flat berries, is bright red, sweet and of delicate flavor. Black Defiance is dark red and highly flavored. Monarch of the West is very large, round, dull light red, and of geed quality. The Bidwell has heavy crops of large, conical, smooth berries of fine flavor. The Great Ameri can berries are very large, measuring in some instances noarlyfeur snehes in diam eter. They are irregular in shape, "being flat and conical and of bright red and geed quality. Ncunan's Prolific is the berry raised extensively in the Seuth for Nei th em markets, but is net much better flav ored than tbe ..Wilsen. These, with the Longfellow, President Lincoln, Champien and Kerr Prolific the latter finely flavored and vcy prolific are the best varieties in the market at present. The first strawberries in the market arc from hothouses and bring very high prices. The berries during the Christmas holidays last year brought $7.50 a quart. Flerida was the first state te supply the North with the berries in any quantity last win ter, the first shipment reaching here in February. This year they were six weeks later, owimrte the cold weather in the Seuth. Thcse berries arc sold for about $3.50 a quart They are brought by rail in refrigerator cars and by steamers, cither in zinc boxes holding six crates, witn a tray filled with ice under the lid of each box, or in compartments made cool by fan refrigerators, where a cuivcut of cold air is driven through the room containing the fruit. About ten days later than the Flerida berries these from Charleston begin te make their appearance. These are the Wilsen and Ncunan's Prolific; the Wilsen seeming te lese none of its charac teristics en Southern soil. Virginia, Del aware and Maryland fellow next, with the wild berry cultivated te a larger size, but with as line a flavor as u just iron tne weeds. It is known in the market as the Federal Point berry, and is a week earlier than the ether varieties. New Jersey, Winchester and Leng Island berries ripen about the same time and Heed the market. " jcG-tld w AXAMAKER BROWN. SHALL WE -ofe- Tliere is in Philadelphia a clothing beuse which has no double in all the world. The world is full of clothing houses ; and it is a geed deal te say that ene is unlike all the rest. First, in its dealing ; and it is surprising that ene heuse should differ much from another. Selling clothing is se simple a matter, that it is likely, one would suppose, te be done in very much the same way in Philadelphia, New Yerk and Londen. But Philadelphia is ahead ; and, curiously enough, one house in Philadelphia is ahead of nil the rest. Te be ahead in dealing is te deal en a higher plane in a mere liberal way, te give the buyer mero well founded conGdence without less of the merchant's safety. This Philadelwhia clothing house Fays te a stranger : " We want te deal with exact justice. We want what belongs te us, viz., a fair profit ; and we want you te have what belongs te you, viz., a liberal money's-worth. Our way te arrive at a result is te mark the price en everything we sell, which price is absolute ; and te let you buy what you like, go away and think the bargain ever, and come and trade back, if you want te. We find by experi ence that this liberality is harmless 'te us. Of course, you like it. And it makes quick and ready dealing. We don't want you te. bring back what you bny it would cost us money every time ; but we would rather you would bring back, than keep, what you don't like. Se, we try te see that you get at first what you will like the better, the mere you knew of it. This is really "the whele philosophy of our dealing." Second, in its goods the amount and variety of them. There are ether houses where excellent clothing is kept, aud a great deal of it ; but there is none, anywhere, that keeps se much. The dealing related above has wen the largest trade the world has yet seen. Te supply such a trade great quantity and variety of clothing are required ; and these in turn increase the trade, be cause everybody likes te cheese out of many things, rather than out of a few. This is the country of rcady-made clothing. Great Britain makes the most of any European country ; but there is net in all Londen any clothing busi ness a quarter as large as that of Oak Hall. New Yerk has several large clothing businesses ; but no one nearly equal te that of Oak Hall ; Bosten likewise. Loek back twenty years ! Have we done you geed service, or net?
