LANCASTER JbilLY ItrtaiicMcETmpDAY, JPNE 2, 1881 J COLUMBIA NEWS. OUR REGULAR CORRESPONDENCE. The regular monthly meeting of the Shawnee fire company will be held this evening. Carncross will positively be herewith his company next Tuesday evening. The box sheet for the performance is new open at Richards' book store. Reserved seats are selling for fifty cents. The condition of Emanuel Fry, who was hit en the head with a large stone while the Decoration day fight was going en, is said te be critical in the extreme te-day. Allisen, the man who threw the stone, is yet at liberty. A robbery of some kind was committed last night at the tell gate en the read te Marietta. Traffic in freight is again picking up en the Pennsylvania railroad. Whit Monday bids fair te be a quiet day in Columbia. The new school beard will meet for or ganization some time between this date and next Thursday evening. The exact time has net yet been appointed. A child named Fink, whose father is the tenant en General Simen Cameren's Done Dene gal farm, fell into the spring a couple of days age and almost drowned before being discovered. Bernard Sewers, of Lancaster, was ar rested lieie this morning en the charge of having surreptitiously obtained posses sion of some hide which he was trying te sell te Henry Hellingcr, the tanner. It is supposed he get the hide in Yerk county, lie tangled himself by telling two stories. Sewers was arrested by Ollicer Struck while driving in a market wagon with his wife and two children, lie has been ledged in the lock-up. W. J. Hese, of Harrisburg, the Pennsyl vania railreal company's general agent for fast local freight, was in town te-day. Anether laud slide and detention te t rains has eccured en the Columbia & Pert Deposit railroad ncarMcCall's Ferry. At last evening's congregational meeting of the E. E. Lutheran church it was unan imously decided te extend a call te lie v. XV. P. Evans, of Cehansey, N. J., te ac cept the pasterate. llcv. Mr. Evans, who is a man of about thirty-five years of age, with a wife and two children, preached for the congregation en Sunday, May 13, and created a very faverable im pression ; hence the call. The sympathy of the community is with the young men who were given a trial yes terday before Justice Frank en the charge made by dusky denizens of "Tew Hill," of carrying concealed deadly wcapeus. The riot which was stirred up at Third and Locust streets by the blacks en Deco ration day was suppressed only by the efforts of a few men who gave their aid te the officer, who alone and unaided was unable te perform his duty. The conse quence of that atfray made the arrest of the blacks necessary and the white men who figure in this case volunteered te serve as efiiccrs te make the arrests. Only two of the darkeys who took an active part in the riot were arrested, but they were both brought in by these volunteer of ficers who as officers pursued them te their rendezvous and liually. after a long chase, succeeded in capturing them. It was while carrying the wcapeus of an officer that flicy gave the offense te the darkeys of the " Hill," which led te the suit new pending. Justice Frank's decision may be expected ou Sat urday. If it gees against the whites the probability is that in the future, when at tempting te make an arrest from among the favored population of the " hill " poi pei poi tieu of the town, an officer, if resisted, will have te leek far and wide for any as sistance from his white brethren, as in the face of such a precedent, it would net be healthy te lay hands en a darkey, even though he was in the act of blowing up the town. Te some persons he has said that his name is Flynn, that he is a cousin of 3IissL. 31. Flyiiu, bookseller, of West King street and that he was going into partnership with her. There is no truth in this story : Miss Flynn knows nothing whatever about the fellow, who is beyond doubt a fraud. He is about 20 years old, 5 feet 8 inches in height, has a smooth face, dresses well and sometime wears a plug and at ether times a straw hat. His operations appzar te have been mostly among the ladies, te whom he exhibits fashion publications which he eilers te furnish below publishers' prices. After the drowning the remains were in tcrrcd at Peckskill, but as the family de sired that this city should be the last rest ing place el the deceased, the remains were brought here. At eleven o'clock the interment took place in the Lancaster ceme tery, iu the presence of the deceased's fam ily, consisting of a wife and two soup, and a few friends. The Episcopal burial service was read by Rev. Mr. Mulhellaud. One of the sons of the deceased, new stepping at the Stevens house, is Werth G. Ress, of the United States revenue marine service. About ene o'clock yesterday afternoon the dead body of Rudelph Wolf was found lying ou the, stones beneath the Earlvillc bridge, close te the water's edge, by Sam uel Graybill. It is supposed that in the night Wolf lay down ou one of the stone appieachcs te the bridge and falling asleep, rolled off, striking the ground about 20 feet below. His head and face wcie badly bruised, and ene ear part ly cut off, but otherwise he bore no marks. He was about SO years of age and was born and lived at Brownstown, ' this coun ty, lie was a miller by occupation, but has net worked at his trade for some time past. He was was a married man aud leaves a wife and three children. lie had the reputation of being the best mill stone dresser in Lancaster county, and often made from $10 te $20 per day at work. Discharged. 3Iag Filsingcr had a hearing before Alderman Barr this morning en the charge of robbing Lizzie Dunham. She was dis charged for waut of evidence te connect her with the crime. Nene of the missing property has been recovered except a pin which was found ou the fleer iu a restau rant where the parties had been. Emma Frasch was yesterday committed te prison for ten days for being drunk and disorderly. Fell Frem a Itulldlug. Jehn Brenner, a boss carpenter, resid ing near Smokctewu, made a narrow cs cape from death this morning while super intending the erection of a new frame building en the premises of Henry Heller, at Eden, Manheim township. That Settles It. When the pronunciation of the name of a state is a thing about which the general assembly of its Legislature passes a joint resolution, we may infer that the matter is of importance. Arkansas is te be pro nounced Arkansaw hereafter, net Arkan sas. It is thus set forth in the joint reso lution which has been signed by Governer Churchill. "Whereas confusion of practice lias arisen in the pronunciation of the name of our state, and it is deemed important that the true pronunciation should be de termined for use in oral official proceed ings ; and whereas the matter has been thoroughly investigated by the State His terical Society, and the Eclectic Society of Little Keck, which have agreed uprm tne correct pronunciation as deriTed from his- tery and the early nsae of the Aaericaa immigrants. Be it. therefore. "fieselced. by both houses of the Gen eral Assembly, That the only true pro pre pro nunciatien of the name of the state, in the opinion of this body, is that received by the trench word representing the sound, and that it should be pronounced iu iuiw ayuauics, wmi the una! s' silent. The 'a ' in each syllable with the Italian sound, aud the accent en the first and last syllables, being the pronuncia tion formerly universally and new 'still commonly used, and that the pronuncia tion with the accent en the second sylla ble, with the sound of a ' in man and the sounding of the terminal s" is an innovation te be discouraged." .VAKKETS. fblladclpBl Market.
