v-.Z .1 LANCASTER DAILY 1OTEL3HGENCER, MONDAY, MAY 80, 1881. t f Ui.' JJ. Lancaster Intelligencer. MONDAY EVENING, MAY SO, 1881. Ictacc. TH V am wk Market lAit Week. United States Tobacco Journal. Quite a scramble for old stock was no ticeable Uiis weelc People begin te care very little whether lets offered aroenerea under the name of Pennsylvania, Connec ticut or New Jersey. Yielding wrappers are wanted, and such bring excellent figures irrespective of where they were his state of things illustrates further our oft expressed opinion that the satisfies of the agricultural department regarding the yield of crops for the past several years have been utterly false. This country produced in '79 but 50,000 cases store than were required for home consumption. This surplus Europe has taken while busi ness depression was reigning there. The home consumption of 'TO tobacco for the year up te date may be set down as having reafihed 130.000 cases. There are probably net ever 20,000 cases of '79 tobacco in the country. Therefore figuring the 50,000 cases that were taken for expert, the total yield of the '79 crop may safely ue set down as having been no mere than 200, 000 cases. The agricultural bureau at Washington calculated the '79 crop te have yielded nearly 300,000 cases. The reports regarding the yield of the '80 crop are te day seemingly as much ex aggerated. Iu view of many proofs, it may be taken for granted that the '80 crop was no larger than the '79, and that there is a reasonable show that packers of sound goods will realize an adequate profit en their investments, and that packers of cigars, will at least, be able te make selec selec tiens at figures net exorbitant. As far as could be ascertained, only 300 cases of '80 tobacco changed hands this week. They consisted of Wisconsin Ha vana seed, and were taken by a large city manufacturer. The summary of the week's transactions is as fellows : Wisconsin Crep '80 ; 200 cases, p. t. Pennsylvania Crep '79 ; 500 cases ; wrappers, 37 te 43c ; flue running, 24c ; low, 13c ; fillers, 7c. Connecticut Crep '79 ; 250 cases ; wrappers, 22 te 27c. Ohie Crep '79 ; 1C0 cases ; wrappers, selections, 15 te 18c. Havana Market continues active. There was one sale of 750 bales. The number sold during the week reached 1500 bales. Seme samples of the '81 Partido crop have arrived here from Havana. In the opinion of a few it hasn't sufficient gum. The leaf, however, is silky and wrappery, and if the samples fitly represent the crop, it is our belief it will turn out well. Can' ltepert. Sales of seed leaf tobacco reported by J. S. Guns' Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers, Ne. 131 Water street, New Yerk, for the week ending Slay 31, 1881 : 400 cases 18S0 Wisconsin, Havana seed, p. t. : 100 cases 1880 Connecticut, seconds lOt te llc. ; 200 cases 1879 Pennsylvania, 22 te 23c." ; 50 cases 1879 Ohie, 12 te 13c. ; 100 c.ts;s 1879 New Englaud, 14 "te 15c; 200 cases 1879 Connecticut, 20 te 25c. ; 100 cases 1879 Pennsylvania, 8c; 250 cases 1879 Suudries 12 te 25c. Total 1,4C0 cases. A Self Contradiction. The United States Tobacco Journal says: ' The Lancaster, Pa., press was tee much taken up this week with local politics te devote a great deal of attention or space te the weed. Hew much valuable infor mation and knowledge the tobacco world has lest thereby is incalculable" All the same, the Journal republishes every word the Lancaster papers say en the subject as its only reliable way of informing its readers en the subjects in volved. Tobacco Fertilizers. A New England farmer writes : I have tried a great many different fertilizers for tobacco and have given up the chase after a substitute for stable manure. I cannot find anything which will carry out the last end and stand ey till cutting time. Many merchantable fertilizers actually damage the quality. I suspect, from the salt which is sure te get in, much of the ground bone has salt in it. A geed rule is : Save , the home-made manure for tobacco ; raise no mere than can be heav ily manured ; 4 buy fertilizers if you must for ether crops. I have had the best success with 30 te 40 leads of green stable manure, turned under ; 25 bushel of ashes sewn and harrowed in per acre ; and for the hill a compost of equal parts of earthed night-soil, hen and hog-pen ma nures, thoroughly mixed, which has lain in a- heap with turfed sides at least six months previous te using a geed hand ful te the hill. This en turf, or better, a heavy crop of clever, will carry out to bacco with any ordinary season, and the leaves after topping will net stand up like se many foxes' cars, looking at you as if anxious te see " what next." SHALL WE SELL THEM ? -oje- ' There is in Philadelphia a clothing house which has no doable in all the world. The world is fall or clothing houses ; and it is a geed deal te say that one is unlike all the rest t First, in its dealing ; and it is surprising that ene house should differ much from another. Selling clothing is se simple a matter, that it is likely, one would suppose, te be done in very much the same way in Philadelphia, New Yerk and Londen. But Philadelphia is ahead ; and, curiously enough, one house it Philadelphia ia ahead of all the rest. Te be ahead iu dealing is te deal en a higher plane in a mere liberal way, te give the buyer mere well-founded confidence without less of the merchant's safety. This Philadelwhia clothing heuse bays te a stranger : " We want te deal with exact justice. We want what belongs te us, viz., a fnir profit ; and we want you te have what belongs te you, viz., a liberal money's-worth. Our way te arrive at a result is te mark the price en everything we sell, which price is absolute ; and te let yen buy what you like, go away and think the bargaiu ever, and come and trade back, if you waut te. We find by experi ence that this liberality is harmless te us. Of course, yen like it. And it makes quick and ready dealing. We don't want you te bring back what you buy it would cost us money every time ; but we would rather you would bring back, than keep, what you don't like. Se, we try te see that you get at first what you will like the better, the mere you knew of it. This is really the whole philosophy of our dealiug." Second, in its goods the amount and variety of them. There are ether houses where excellent clothing is kept, and a great deal of it ; but there is none, anywhere, that keeps se much. The dealing related above has wen the largest trade the world has yet seen. Te supply such a trade great quantity and variety of clothing are required ; and these in turn increase the trade, be cause everybody likes te choeso out of many things, rather than out of a few. This is the country of ready-made clothing. Great Britain makes the most of any European country ; but there is net in all Londen any clothing busi ness a quarter as large as that of Oak Hall. New Yerk has several large clqthing businesses ; but no ene nearly likewise. Loek back twenty years ! Have we done you geed service, or net?
