Commissioner Le Due's Tea.
The tests te which certain sample pro
ducts of tea grown in the Seuth under the
auspices of the commissioner of agricul
ture, which have been pronounced " ex
cellent " by the appointed tasters, may
have been really something that could be
sold te many consumers if the price were
fixed at a very moderate figure ; but in
connection with testing or tasting, net a
word is said as te whether it could be pro
duced profitably at a price that tea grown
elsewhere of similar quality new sells for
in the market. This, when all is said,
must be the actual, controlling point of
what can be done in the United States as
a competing tea grower.
Improving the Lima Bean.
Seme people complain that of all the
garden products and the vast improve
ments that have been made in nearly all
of tlicm, the Lima bean is new about
where it was fifty years age. And it is
nearly no. Latterly there has been some
increase in the size of the pod and the
bean, aud that is all. But then may it
net be said at the same time that the ex
ccllencc of the bean is such that there is
no x-oem for improvement in the quality.
It is true that it still rcquries the big,
long pole, which has te be planted with
almost the solidity of an ordinary fence fence
pest ; but when that is said wc may con
clude that all is said that can be against
it. Fer ourselves, we arc only tee glad
that we have this bean as it is vouchsafed
te us, and we doubt if we shall ever see it
improved in any way, except in size, and
it is questionable whether that would be
an advantage at all. If the pole could be
dispensed with and a trellis like that of
the tomato be substituted, it 'would be a
decided advantage ; but it is a natural
climber, and climb it probably will te the
cud of its days. Se be it.
Pruning Tomatoes.
Many persons find much profit in pinch
ing back the branches of the tomatoes ;
aud it is a geed practice when judiciously
(lone. It may be overdone however, and
injury result. In the first place it is no use
te attempt it after the llewcrs have fallen.
The idea is te force the nourishment into
the fruit at the earliest start ; for it is at
that time that the luture fate of the fruit
is cast. A lew leaves beyond the fruit is
an advantage. It is only the growth that
is te be checked. Aud then much damage
is done by taking oil the leaves as
well as the fruit. The toiuate-pjant
needs all the leaves it can get. It is
only the branches that aie te be
checked in their growth. Ne one who has
net tried it cau have any idea of hew
valuable the leaves arc te the tomato
plant. One may for experiment take off
most of the leaves of a plant, and he will
find the ilaver insipid, and every way peer.
Of course it is the peculiar acidity of the
tomato that gives it se much value te all
of us ; but the acid from a tomato that
has ripened en an insufficient amount of
foliage, is disagreeable te most tastes.
Tbe same principles has been found te
work in managing grapevines. The man
who judiciously pinches back the branches
docs well ; but he who strips off the feli
age te "let in the sun and the air," gen
erally finds that he has made a bad mess
of it.
Tomatoes en Stakes.
A friend tells us that he was pestered
beyond measure by the potato beetles last
year. They net only fed en his potatoes,
but egg plants and potatoes suffered as
well. He had read that tomatoes would
de well en stakes, and lie feuud that the
plants se treated cscape the ravages of the
beetle, while these en the ground wi re
almost devoured. The lower branches of
the tomatoes en stakes were eaten, but all
above a feet were untouched. The idea is
that the beetle is somewhat lazily inclin
ed, at least when climbing has te be done.
The hint is a valuable one. If this is net
a mere accident, but a genuine protection
against the beetle, it will be a new argu
ment for stakes, although these existing
are geed enough. There is no doubt that
the plants arc mere productive en stakes
or trellises than when grown in any ether
way ; and then the influence of the sun all
around alike is favorable te a thorough
ripening of the fruit, improving the flavor
considerably, especially in the estimation
of these who like te cat tomatoes raw.
It may be repeated that the stakes for
tomatoes must be very stout and strong,
asthe weight of fruit requires something
substantial te rest en : and if the stakes
can have arms or knots te help sustain the
branches, it will be better than depending
en twine alone. The stakes must be
planted in the ground firmly before the
plants ate set. These plants arc easily kept
in position by a light tying until the fruit
comes, then the weight requires geed
judgment te secure them well.

IGAIIT'S OLD WINK STOKE:.
Brandy as a Medicine.
The following article was voluntarily sent te
Mr. IS. E. Slavmaker, Agent for llcigart's Old
Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi
cian et this county, who has extensively used
the Brandy referred te in his regular practice.
It K commended te the attention of these af
flicted with
Indigestion and Dyspepsia.
BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.
Tin-, new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant
wu-.neicr intended as a beverage, but te be
u-c.l as a medicine of great potency in the cure
et some of the detractive dNeascs which
sv. eep aw ay their annual thousands of victims.
Willi a purely philanthropic motive we pre
sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe
cially these alllicted with that miserable dis
ease Dypep-ia, a specific remedy, which 13
nothing mere or legs than
Brandy.
The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or

when used properly,
A Sovereign Remedy
or all their ills and uciic. lie it, however
li ietiy undcisloed that we prescribe and nte
but one article, and that is
REIGAltTS OLD BRANDY,
Held by our enterprising young friend, II fi
SliAYMAKEU. This Brandy has steed the
let ler vears, and has never failed, as far
as our experience extends, and we therefore
give il the preference ever all ether Brandies
neamtter with hew many jaw-breaking French
titles they are branded. One-fourth of the
money that is yearly thrown away en various
impotent dyspepsia specifics would sutlicc te
buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or
Jase-j. In proof et the curative powers of
Reigart's Old Brandy,
In wises et Dyspepsia, we can summon num
bers et witne-Jses one ease iu particular we
cite:
A hard-working farmer had been afllictcd
with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number el
years; hi stomach would reject almost every
kind of loed; he had sour eructatiens con cen con
stantlyeo appetite in laet, he was obliged te
restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread,
and as a beverage he used McUrann's Beet
Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new,
preached at times, and in his discourses often
declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong
drink. When advised te try
Beigart's Old Brandy,
In his wise, he looked up with astonishment,
but after hearing et its wonderful etleets in
the eases of some of his near acquaintances, lie
at last consented te fellow our advice. He
used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the
first bottle giving him an appetite, and before
the second was taken be was a sound man, with
a stomach capable of digesting anything which
hc'chesc te eat. He stil! keeps it and uses a lit
tle occasionally; and since lie has this medi

LINENS!
AVe have received new linens from Belfast, Barnsley, Duntermline, Lisle,
Brussels, Ghent, Silesia, Bohemia. We have ransacked all Europe for linens,
and have a variety of both fabric and finish that could net be gathered in the
American market. The goods are fresh, tee. That's important ; for linens
bought in Njw Yerk may be several years-old, and you knew starched linens
le net improve by age. The dressings used by the manufacturers is net se de
structive as starch; but it does injure -the fabric in time. We have another
advantage in prices. We gain the importer's profit.
The result is we get the best linens in the world, iu the best possible condi
tion, aud for the least money anybody can get them for. We can give you
the importers' profit, and still have enough left.
New it is proper for te consider that somebody else may be doing the same
thing, aud afford the very same advantages. Se, if you please, whatever you
wish te buy get samples of it from us and from ethers, and compare.
Or buy our goods, if you like ; and if you can de as well elsewhere, bring
ours back. This is rather a brave challenge ; for, yen knew nobody wants
remnants.
The linens new in are sheeting, pillow, bolster and shirting linens, towels,
.tewelings, doilies, napkins, table cloths aud table linens.
