i LANCASTER DAltt-UIELLiGENCEB, TUESDAY, MAY 17. 1881. jvaticasiet intelligencer. TUESDAY EVENING, MAY 17, 1881. LILACS IN THK COITMTRT. ifer the Ibtellxeescxr. The purple lilacs at the gate Made sweet the night's sort air. And one large bunch, my rival like. Steeped down te kiss the lralr Of the modest maid beside me ; And the moonlight, shining through the leaves, Threw o'er her head a crown. And as the lilacs steeped te kiss, My auburn head bent down. And I there new, don't deride me. And I told iter a tale 'neath the lilacs Uiere, The short, sweet tale se old, And the night breeze paused as If te hear. What se oft it has heard told. Fer that tale will bear repeating. And two deep eyes were shaded then, And two lips trcmuled red, Atid the lilac gave ray shoulder proud. The moon-crowned, drooping head, And her heart, 1 felt it beating. Old Luna's woman nature peeped At us around a tree ; A whip-peer-will crieil "Ktas-'er-Wlll," Or se it seemed 10 me, And I couldn't help but de it. The lilac3 nodded all around. As it they thought It right. And net one sound discordant stirred The ambient air et night. Till hirshly we heard through It " New, you Eliza Jane, just you inarch right in yer out et that damp night air, or you'll be a liewlln' all round the house ter-inorrew with the toothache, uiid can't help me wash V Me. CARTER HARRISON. The Sert et Mayer Chicago Has. Hen. Carter Harrison was lately re elected mayor of Chicago, defeating a can didate who was pledged te advance the temperance cause. Centiary te expecta tion, Harrison began his second term with a elef.urc of a number of disreputa ble resorts. At a temperance meet ing in Plymouth church a com mittee was appointed te thank him for what he had done, and te suggest ether things for him te de. The interview which resulted was remarkable. The com mittee had hardly been introduced when the mayor said : "I would net have been elected if you fellows had had your way. Yeu did all you could te defeat me. Yeu are always kicking against something you don't knew anything about. I am in favor of ajfew all-night saloons, but you gentle men ait; net liberal-minded enough te sec my motives. Yeu fellows are tee straight laced." The coinmittce said that ever 1,000 young girls hail been counted tti one night coming out of low ceucert halls. "Pshaw!" the mayor replied, -'the same night at McVickcr's you might have seen 'Camilla,' gilded, al luring, throwing a charm aud glamour about sensuality and vice, aud an audience of se-called intelligent and rcspectable people applauding it. Why don't your association attend te this?" The committee talked total abstinence te his honor, only te elicit his senti ment en the subject as fellows : " 1 can drink like a man and a Christian and keep sober. If you gentlemen were te drink you would perhaps become drunk and make Inutes of yourselves. Yeu would be the intemperate ones. The re sponsibilities of my office arc such that I sometimes Hud it necessary te take a drink. t is a debatable question whether I should be deprived of my privilege because you, gentlemen, orethcrs, cannot drink without making biutc.i of yourselves." American Humer. A iccent issue of the Berlin Tttytblatt il lustrates the oft-asserted fact that some forms of American humor are net readily comprehended in Kurepc. A writer in the German paper came aeress ene of the sen sen sttienal announcements of the "Salva tien Army," as fellows : " War against Satan is declared in Hobo Hebo Hobe ken; ami begins en Sunday, September 12th, 1880, at 73 Newark street. The first shot will be fiied at 8 o'clock in the morn ing, beginning with a service of prayer. Sheeting will be kcpl up all day, with sheit iutciiuptieus, etc., etc." In America an announcement like this is taken figuratively. Ne ene attends the revival exercises with an impression that guns and pistols constitute the weapons of offensive warfare agaiust the enemy of mankind, lint the matter-of-fact German writer construed sheeting te mean shoot sheet ing. He did net understand the Ameri can preccsss of sheeting at sin. He is net disposed te be severe in his comments, but attributes the character of our religious assaults te centain uncon trollable national impulses. He proceeds as fellows te enlighten the German mind as te the nature of t1ie.se services. " The American is fend of sheeting. It isgieat sport for him te use his revolver en all iestival occasions, and in the cities, en the anniversary of the Declaration of Indecndcnce, many persons are shot who have the misfortune te stand in the way of these joyful salutes. We also knew that Sunday is observed in America with puritanical severity, aud that all the joy ous amusements indulged in by us inhab itants of tiie old world are . forbidden in the United States. But the people will be amused, aud since the Americans are hap piest when they are sheeting, the intelli gent Yankees hit upon the uncommonly sly idea te unite a religious service with the pleasures of the sheeting range. Shoetiug en Sunday is a great sin, but, ii Satan serves as the target, it is a solemn duty. Se the public amuses itself and has a devil of a time, without breaking the Sunday law. which it circumvents with such pleasure." The point of the German writer's com ments is still further blunted by the fact that the " Salvation Army " is an English institution, and the peculiar phraseology of the announcement was adopted in England. It must be admitted, however, that there is a strong suspicion that it was the work of some American who happened te be in Londen at the time. Anocletes et Animal. At Nakkoe, in the Island of Lapland, an eagle was shot en the 14th of April which measured six and a-half feet between the tips of the wings. Round its neck it had a brass chain, te which a little tin box was fasten ed. The box contained a slip of paper ou which was writtcu in Danish: "Caught and set free again in 1792 by N. and C. Andersen Bestod in Falster, Denmark." Jesiah Masten of New Harlcy, Orange county, N. Y., saw lying en the bottom of the Wallkill liver what seemed te be a large ilat stone. S.e.i it bean te move. and with assistance a turtle weighing seventy-live pounds was landed. The turtle measured thirty-live iuches in length. It took we mcu te drag him up the hill te Masten's heuse. It is the largest turtle ever caught in that section. A gentleman in Banger, Me., had pre sented te him a Maltese cat with four young nursing kittens by a friend living fourteen miles away in the country. The cat and her kittens were placed in a clesp covered basket inside of which was a blanket in which they were wrapped and the whole then covered with a thick rag. The basket aud its contents were then brought in a wagon te Banger, the dis tance stated. The cat and her kittens were kept iu a room in their home and carefully watched, fed and petted for seven days, she appearing te be wonted and content. On the morn ing of the seveuth day she and her kittens were seen at their new home for the last time, and wcie missed very seen after. The following day at neon ihe appeared at her old home with the kittens. She did net return by the read, the way she came, as she was seen'by several persons going through the fields with a kitten in her mouth. Allowing thirty hours te have elapsed between the time she was last seen at her new home and the time she was first seen at her old home, she must have traveled a distance of 112 miles, carrying a kitten one-half the same distance. In the real alligator skin they are $5 each, but less expensive ones are shown in the Eng lish sealskin and its many imitations ; also in canvas and straw netting. A Visit te Kochcfert. Henii Hochcfert was visited recently by a correspondent who found the mercurial Frenchman charming in manner and volu ble in speech, particularly in defaming Gambctta, whom he called avaricious as well as ambitious, net above a bribe, a heavy gambler at .the Bourse, aud in dan ger of cemius te an untimely end owing te his fondness for strong drink. He rives Gambctta four mere yeais in which te accomplish his own political ruin. Of Kochcfert himself it is s.iid he leeks co be fifty ycais of age. He is tall and thin, has very bushy hair, which stands up in great masses from his lerehead and ever each ear. Ue is growing gray, though his mus tache is still coal black, with a few gray hairs mixed through it. The Beer Drunk All tits Same. In Springfi eld 111., by order of the mayor all the saloons in the city were closed en Sunday, but thousands of peo ple, saloon-keepers and their patrons," re paired te Lincoln park, near a brcwery, and mere beer was drunk by Springfield citizens than in any twenty-four hours for it number of years. Late in the afternoon the beer began te work, and a fight en sued, in which the drunken mob tore the beards from the fence and demolished things generally, aud the shcrilf and his deputies and a posse had quite a diubulty in restoring peace. During the light Harry Carruthcrs shot Uebert Bifiihetim, weuudius him scvcrly. S.'tOO Reward.
