FRIDAY EVENING, MAY 13, 1881.
THE SEMINARY.
Graduating Essays Last Evening.
Last evening the graduating exercises
of the Reformed theological seminary ter
minated by the delivery of theses in the
chapel of the college. Despite the very
warm weather there was a geed audience
present, and the pulpit desk, reading desk
and altar were handsomely adorned with
flowers, a superb cress upon the latter be
ing of especial note, and the inscription,
"Holiness te the Lord," in letters of
green, upon the wall of the pulpit re
cess lacing the audience.
The customary ritual being conducted
by the president of the seminary, Rev. .
V. Gcrhart, D. D., the choir connected
with St..Stephcn's(cellcje) chapel sang the
Te Deuiu Laudamus, and the first thesis
of the evening was read by Mr. Newton
J. Miller, of Allentown, whose subject was
" Christian Morality." The speaker com cem
battcd the efficacy of the se-called moral
ity of the world as a means of redemption.
Humanitarianism and all the ether isms
thlt arc independent of the Divine law are
incompetent te perform geed works be
cause they rest upon the foundation of
self. The principle of geed works is faith,
and morality is a component of faith. A
requisite of geed works is that they shall
conform te the law of Ged, and love is the
realization of that law. That, then, is only
true Christian morality which depends en
love te Ged and love te man. The speak
er drew a.. line marking the dif
ference between the cede of the Reman
church, where the performance of geed
works is made te rest upon the command
of the hierarchy and is an act of obedience
te the priesthood, and that of the Protest
ant faith, as outlined in the foregoing
scheme, and took the ground that
next te the Loges stands personal exam
ple guidiug men te eternal life.
The second thesis was read by Mr. C.
II. Ilcrbst, of Colcbreokdalc, whose sub
ject was " The Importance of Hebrew for
the Christian Ministry." He took the
ground that the clergyman ought te have
a thorough familiarity with the original
text of the sacred volume, and be no
longer dependent upon the laity for trans
lations. Te that cud therefore the student
of theology should make this language
ameug the most earnest of his re
searches, and no longer plead weak eyes
as an excuse for net including it in
course. After pointing out the dis
tinctive difference existing between the
Greek tongue and the Hebrew, the for
mer of which is a member of the Aryan
family and the latter of the Semitic, the
speaker felicitously described the beauty of
the Hebrew, with its grand and sympa
thetic expicssien, its stately tread as in
stanced in that noble poem of the Heek
of Jeb, and its power te mirror the very
800 1 and feeling of the inspired writer.
The speaker illustrated the liability of the
minister te make mistakes by reason of
his lack of acquaintance with the original
text of the Hely Heek en account of the
uncertainty of translated versions, and the
minister of Ged may, at no distant day,
ueed the armor of the Hebrew te maintain
the integrity of the Divine origin of the
Bible.
The subject of the thesis of Mr. Edgar
S. Hassler, of Mercersburg, was ' The
Apostelatc." At the outset the speaker
presented a historical sketch recounting
the selection and calling by our Lord of
His apostles. They were of Diviuc com
mission and sent into this world te pro
claim the gospel of Christ. On the day of
Pentecost they entered upon the full work
of their apostleship, having received power
from en hiiih through the means of the
Hely Ghost. Alter describing their
manner of work the sicaker raid
that while history upon this point
is .somewhat clouded it is probable
that all el the apostles el the early church
sutfered martyrdom with the exception of
St .lehu. The various phases et char
acter exhibited in Christ's apostles arc
manifested in St. Paul, who stands
feith as the representative of faith,
St. Peter of hoc, and St. Jehn of love.
The power delegated te His apostles by
our Divine Master continues in its general
character te day in the ministry of the
church. Ministers of the gospel, like the
early a ies lies, are of Divine appointment.
Theirs is no chance or hap-hazard enter
prise, but their holy mission is te go into
the weild te convert and te save ; and in
this aid neus work they have the comfort
ing assurance of the Saviour's blessed
premise, 'Le, I am with you always,
even te the end of the world."
The concluding thesis by Mr. Edwin A.
Gcrnant, Lee.spert, Pa., was upon "The
Olliee of the Keys." Since the holy cath
olic church is the mystical body of Christ,
the mission of the lie formed church is the
performance of the elliee of the keys whose
functions are described in the answer te
the 8'd question of the catechism te
be the preaching of the gospel, by
which the kingdom of heaven is
opened te believers aud closed
against unbelievers. Te the holy
ministry is committed the preaching of the
the gospel, theirs is the Divinely appointed
means of grace. The most unchurchly
sects manifest an inner consciousness of
this and are exacting m their performance
of certain efliees which they de net pro
claim, nor concerning which de they have
the (ei mulated dogmas of scholarly theo
logians. The argument, of this orator
was te show the universal power of the
church, aud he animadverted upon the
readiness of some of its ministers
te employ the keys te unlock the gates of
hell for the entrance of the sinners, whilst
they fail te make use of them te open the
gates of heaven te admit the redeemer.
This is the gospel of wrath and net the
gospel of love, the gospel of their Divine
commission. In support of his argument
the young gentleman quoted the fpremise
of the Master te His apostles, ' Whatsoever
thou shalt bind en earth shall be bound iu
heaven, and whatever thou shalt loose en
earth shall be loosed iu heaven."
The number of the graduating class was
eleven, of whom, however, only the
above four read their theses, the ethers
handiiig theirs te the faculty. All were
scholarly aud able productions, giving ev
idence of deep thought in their prepara
tion and of familiarity with church doc
trine Only the bares; outline of the pa
pers read last evening have been given,
owing te existing pressure upon our space.
The complete list of the graduates, with
the subjects of their theses, is as fellows :

its Divine Origin. " Themas A. Fcnster-

being the sole, duct and quartet. At the
conclusion, Hev. A. H. Kremer, D. D.,

Brandy as a Medicine
The following article was voluntarily sent te
Mr. J I. E. Slayinaker, Agent for Hcigurt'ri Old
Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi
cian et this county, who has extensively used
the Ilranily referred te in his regular practice.
It is commended te the attention of these :tt
tlictedwith Indigestion and Dyspepsia.
BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.
This new much abused Alcoholic .Stimulant
was never intended as a beverage, but te lie
used as a medicine of great potency in the cure
of some of the destructive diseases which
sweep away their annual thousands ei' victims.
With a purely philanthropic motive we pre
sent te tile favorable notice et invalids espe
cially these afflicted with that miserable dis
ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which 13
nothing mere or less than
Brandy.

erall their ills and aches. Be it, however
strictly understood that we prescribe and use
en i one article, ami inut is
REIGART'S OLD BRANDY,
Sold by our enterprising young friend, II K,
SLAY MAKER. This Brandy has steed the
test for years, and has never failed, as far
as our experience extends, and we therefore
give f t the preference ever all ether Brandies
noSUtterwith iiew many jaw-breaking French
titles they arc branded. One-fourth or the
money that is yearly thrown away en various
impotent dyspepsia specifics would sulllee te
buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or
Jases. In proof of the curative powers of
Reigart's Old Branay,
In cases of Dyspepsia, we can summon iniin
hers of witnesses one case in particular we
cite:
A hard-working farmer had been utllicted
with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ter a number el
years; his stomach would reject almost every
kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con cen
sUtntly no appetite In fact, he was obliged te
restrict his diet te crackers ami stale bread,
and as a beverage he used McGmun's Reet
Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new,
preached at times, and in his discourses often
declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong
drink. When advised te try
Reigart's Old Brandy,
In his case, lie looked up with ustnnisiuncnL
but after hearing et its wonderful ellects in
the cases of some of his near acquaintances, hi;
at last consented te fellow our advice. He
used the Brandy faithfully aud steadily; the
ursi inline, giving nun an uppcuie, ami before
tlie second was taken be was a Keund man, wit It
a stomach capable of digcstinganythiiig which
licjchesc te cat. He still keens it and uses a lit
