THE SMALL-POX CASE.
Death of the Emigrant Weman.
Yesterday we 6tated than au emigrant
woman was suffering from small-pox in a
small house en West Lemen street near
North Queen. Officer Flick notified Dr.
C. H. Brown, secretary of the beard of
Health, of the woman's condition, and he
then went teD. B. Landis, president of
the peer directors' beard, and procured an
order for the woman's admission te the
hospital. In the afternoon the doctor
visited the house where the woman
was and found that she was dead.
He examined the body and he says that it
looked very much like a mild case of
small-pox ; there was every indication of
that disease, although it was net possible
te tell exactly whether that was the cause
of the death. A number of persons who
saw the woman, several of whom have
had small-pox, state positively that that
was the disease which caused the woman's
death.
Corener Mishler held an inquest en the
remains. The jury was composed of
Officer William Titus, Reah F. Wilsen,
Jacob. Fraukferd, C. S. Pickcl, Jehn A.
Schuh and Michael Snyder. They ren
dered the following verdict : "That the
woman came te her death from privation
and neglect, having suffered from some
unknown disease, and the jury rec rec
emmed the coroner te remove the body,
at once and that the house be cleaned and
renovated, and the family of the deceased
removed." After the inquest the body
was leaded en a wagon an was hauled te
the almshouse where it was buried. The
house where the woman died was in a
filthy condition, and the smell in it was
very offensive. The beard of uealth have
given orders te have the house thoroughly
cleaned aud the persons living in it must
be removed. The terrible condition of
the house, which is occupied by four
families, may have had much te de with
tlie woman's death.
The deceased woman was 50 years of
age. Her nanie was Margaret Bailing
and she leaves a husband and one child.

Jehn Frederick and Michael Seiblest
have been held in bail by Alderman Ban

sault and battery, preferred by William
Mossenkep. It appears that the parties
had a quarrel en Last King street, above
Shippcu, en Wednesday eveuing in which
Mossenkep had three teeth knocked out.
Geerge Burten, colored, a porter at the
Grape hotel, has been arrested en com
plaint of Jehn Wiley, and he will bave te
auswer a cbarge of assault aud battery be
fore Alderman Dennelly, of the Seventh
ward. Wiley says that he was selling
shad this morning, aud while he was in
front of the Grape hotel he heard Burten
calling a let of boys some ugly names.
One of these boys was Wiley's son, aud he
told Burten net te speak te him that way.
This made Gcerge angry and he knocked
Wiley down and kicked him.

There arc plenty of people here who
think that the weather is net warm. They
have no doubt heard of the huge piles of
ice which are yet lying along the banks of
the Susquehanna. This morning two
men were seen en our streets who were
overcoats te their heels. Whether they
had any ether coats en is net known, as
the "ulster cevcrcth a multitude of old
clothes," but they sported straw hats.
These men should be drivcu around the
city in ice wagons. If they are allowed te
walk they nay be taken with hydrophobia.
They might wear muzzles at least. The
organ-grinder also clings te his overcoat,
for fear he may be left in a snowdrift.

TliAclI-knewii stallion, Old Speedwell,
has died. This horse was bred en the
SjmhmIyycII farm, in Elizabeth township,
where he has been kept all his life-time,
which was twenty-three years. The ani
mal was well known te Lancaster and
Lebanon county horsemen and was a fa
vorite stallion among horse-breeders and
trainers. He was as sound as could be ex
tcctcd for an animal of his age, but was
overcome with colic and died. Mr. Yeutz,
the manager, greatly regretted the de
parture of his old pet and favorite, but
there was nothing te be done te prolong
his life.
Almest a Fire.
Immediately after the adjournment of
the medical convention yesterday after
noon aud befere all the gentlemen had left
the hall, a cloud of smoke was seen en the
fctage, and Dr. E. P. Townsend, of Bever
ly, N. J., went back te asccitainthccau.se.
He found that by some means the appar
atus shown by Dr. Lee during his address
made a short a time before had been upset,
and the phosphorus it contained, ou being
exposed te the air, immediately took lire,
in close proximity te the scenery, which
would in a few minutes have 1'ccu in
flames had net the discovery been made
and means taken te prevent a spread of the
flames.
