5TP LANCASTER DlILI IKTELUGENCEli, SATURDAY,. MAI 7. 1881 -U. i n lUuraafer hxtittwnwc. SATURDAY BTBHIMK MAY 7. 1M1. Tke TtbMccTrade. Bew It la Increasing la Um W Braaeh Valley. Willlkmspert Gazette and Bulletin. Comparatively few persons axe aware of the valne of the tobacco crop in the West Branch Valley for 1880, and the statistics that have been gathered regarding itwiU be a source of surprise even te tobacco growers themselves. Fer years the crow crew ing of tobacco en the rich alluvial lands about Jersey Shere, the flats of Pine creek and the vicinity of Fine station, has been steadily increasing, until the crop has come te be regarded as one of the staple productions. It required some tirae for these engaged in its cultivation te learn the best methods of raising and curing the crop, and new that they have acquired that information by years of ex perience, they rarely fail in making geed crop aud obtaining geed prices. Almest any one can grew tobacco, but comnara cemnara tively few knew hew te prepare it for market after it is grown, without being taught the process of curing. This diffi culty has been largely overcome by these regularly engaged in the business, and the crop is new one of the most profitable raised in Lycoming and Clinten counties. The following figures, obtained from the shipping . books of the Philadelphia & Erie railroad company, will show the quantity already seat te market of the crop of 1880 : Stations. Pound. Leck Haven 485,772 v uyne. 5im,eif Jersey Shere 713,098 Willlamspert 55,998 Montgomery 12,074 Dewart . ." 247,299 Watsontown 86,779 Milten 78,37fi Moiitanden 2,781 Total 5,058,821 Here we have au aggregate of ever two millions of peuuds already shipped, and it is probable that this ameuut has been in creased fully ene hundred thousand pounds mere, by shipments that have been made .since the above statistics were gathered. It will be notieod that Jersey Shere, as a producing and shipping point, stands at the head of the list, and Leck Haven comes next. Then fellows Piue and Dew art, with a geed showing from Watson Watsen town aud Milten. As the crop was gen erally well cured fair prices were obtained en an average, and in mauy instances the very best prices were paid by buyers. Frem the above figures tobacco growers and dealers can readily see what a hand some sum of money was realized from the sale of these two millions of pounds. And as the cultivation of tobacco is in creasing from year te year, it need sur prise no one te see ten millions of pounds produced annually between Leck Haven aud Northumberland before ten years. In many of the best districts in the valley scarcely a pound has been raised. Take the great Muncy valley, for instance, which is one of the richest districts in the county, as well as White Deer, aud ene can see that millions of pounds could be produced in these districts alone. The day is riot far distant when the-, West Branch valley will rank next te Lancaster county iu the production of tobacco. Williamsport Gazette and Bultetin. Tke Farm Laberer. Gcrmautewn Tclcgrapli. Many farmers, especially these some what advanced in years, contend that the time was when there was no difficulty in getting hands te work whenever they were needed ; but of latter years this has net been the case. Men, they say, needing work would sooner go round as tramps, and hang about cities with nothing te de, then te aa out te the country te our farms where they arc needed, and de an honest day's work. We hardly think that things arc as bad as this. There never was any difficulty in getting permanent hauds, nor is there much new. The trouble is te get meu for a few weeks only, as temporary or extra help ; and in this there always was trouble and there always will be. Men are pretty much all alike. They have friends, acquaintances and assecia tiens, and the temptation te keep near them is natural and strong. They may net have work new, and there may be work fifty or one huudrcd miles away, but surely something will turn up near home, among se many looking out for them, and they let the probable chance go by. Then it costs money te go te these distant places, and they have nothing te spare for the chance. It is net unreasonable that meu should think in this way. And then there is the natural indisposition of men te take in and beard total strangers for a short time, even when work is pushing te be done ; and it is no uncommon thing for persons te rcfuse applicants work when they really -need them, because they de net like their leeks. Many a man has actually started off from the towns te the country in search of work which he has bceu told is plenty there, only te find day after day of disappoint ment, and te discover in the end that it was much easier te beg thau te find work. Wc have indeed no doubt that in many cases the great tramp brigade has been re cruited by men who, Tailing te find work, reduced te beggary by the chapter of ac cidents, have taken te this as a regular profession. Once reduced te this, lazy habits of course set in, and then the tramp wants feed and money, and anything else than work. Wc fear these things will always be, and the only remedy is the increase of chances of steady work. Our farm-life is rather deficient in this respect, and per haps mere se since the introduction of se much labor saving machinery. If it could be se ordered that there would always be employment at eveiy season in the year for men living about farms, se that they could always be at hand men whom one knows and can trust there would be very little cry for extra help. We suppose farming will never come te this, but it might be brought nearer te it iu many cases than it is new. LANCASTER HOUSISHOLD MARKET. DAIKT. Slaymaker, Agent for Reigart's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who has extensively used the Brandy referred te in his regular practice. It is commended te the attention of these af flicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. . This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant wa never intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of great potency in the cure of some of the destructive diseases' which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. Wit ha purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the laver.iblc notice et invalids espe cially these afflicted with that miserable lis eaws Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which i3 uething mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or less debility, will 11 nil this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their ills and aches. Be it, hewcvei strictly understood that we prescribe and use but one article, and that is REIGARTS OLD BRANDT, Sold bv our enterprising young friend, H E SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the test for years, ami has never failed, as far as our experience extends, and wc therefore giv- ii the preference overall ether Brandies nematterwith hew many jaw-breaking French tillce nicy are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or Jascs. In proof of the curative powers et Beigart's Old Brandy, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon iinin bers of witnesses one case in particular we cite : A hard-working farmer had been" aillicted with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ter a number el years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage be used McGrann's Reet Beer. lie is a Methodist, anil then, as new, S reached at times, and in his discourses often eclaimeii earnestly againstall kinds of strong drink. When advised te try Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with usienlsninent, but alter hearing et its weuilerlm elleets in the cases of borne of ids near acquaintances, he at last consented e fellow our advice. He u-ed the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the firbt bottle giving him au appetite, and before the second was takcii he was a sound man, with a stomach capable el" digest ing anything which hejcheac te eat. He still keeps it and Uses a lit tle occasionally ; and since lie has this medi cine he has been of very Httle pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A PKAcrisixa Physician. II. E. We have received new liuens from Belfast, Barnsley, Duntermline, Lisle, Brussels, Ghent, Silesia, Bohemia. We have ransacked all Europe for linens, and have a variety of both fabric and finish that could net be gathered in the American market. The goods are fresh, tee. That's important ; for linens bought in TUsn Yerk may be several years old, and you knew starched linens de net improve by age. The dressings used by the manufacturers is net se de structive as starch ; but it does injure the fabric in time. We have another advantage in prices.' We gain tbe importer's profit. The result is we get the best linens in the world, iu the best possible condi tion, and for the least money anybody can get them for. We can give you the importers' profit, and still have enough left. New it is proper for te consider that somebody else may be doing the same thing, and afford the very same advantages. Se, if you please, whatever you wish te buy get samples of it from us and from ethers, and compare. Or buy our goods, if you like ; and if you can de as well elsewhere, bring ours back.
