Dr. Cottrell returned em the 1 .o'clock
train yesterday from his trip toBichmend,
Va.
The Colombia social dab took in a new
member last evening.
Evan Jenes, lateeftbe Shawnee rolling
mill, was yesterday afternoon presented
witb a'hanaseme geld-beaded cane by the
employees. The cane was appropriately
inscribed. Mr. Jenes gees te Allentown.
Prof. B. G. Ames, superintendent of the
Columbia public schools, was at Harris
buag yesterday afternoon in attendance at
a re-union or convention of school super
intendents. Mr. C. S, Sbadd delivered his lecture
in Mount Zieu A.. M. E. church in "Dis
ease and its Origin," te a net very large
audience.
Rev. J. H. Esterlinc, the pastor, will
preach te-morrow morning and evening
in the Church of Ged.
.Under the supervision of the fire com
mittee of councils, the three engines of the
fire department of Columbia will have
their machinery tried this afternoon The
Vigilant and Columbia engines will be
tried at two and three o'clock, respectively
at the Reading & Columbia coal chutes
and the Shawnee engine at four o'clock at
Union street wharf.
Senater Den Cameren arrived in town
at one o'clock te day and was sent from
here te Marietta en a special train.
There was a very fair market this mere
ing. The supply of shad was net very
large, for the reason that the hucksters
gebble the fish up as seen as they are
brought te shore. While this demand
keeps up prices are bound te remain
high.
A number of rafts were dropped te Col
umbia yesterday afternoon and this morn
ing, but go no farther down en account of
low water. If a rise in the river should
set in they will be taken en down, but if
the contrary be the case they will be taken
te their destination via the canal.
The Columbia fire company transacted
a heap of business at it monthly meeting
last evening.
A surprise party was taken last evening
te the residence of Mr. Seacrist, en Union
street, where the hours were pleasantly
spent. The occassien was Mr. B's birth
day anniversary.
A telephene connection is about being
made with the office of Dr. Armer, at
Second and Walnut streets.
The Citizens' band last evening sere
naded 'Squires Grier and Yeung, H. M.
North, esq., and several ether prominent
citizens.
New is the time when we expect te sec
the Republican candidates for county offi
ces drop into town " thick." There were
three of them here yesterday Messrs.
Jehn D. Skilcs, Jehn II. High and Dr. W.
Compten.
Cornelius Tyson, the father of the little
girl who was assaulted by a tramp in
West Ilempfield township en Sunday
afternoon last, an 'account of which was
given jn the Intelligencer of a few days
aire, was in Columbia yesterday. He says
that the tramp in question hat been sc a
at or near Mountville since making the
assault and that he (the father) came here
te invoke the justice's aid in apprehend
ing the fellow. It was learned that the
same tramp had m assaulted another .little
girl before his meeting of Miss Tyson.
The condition of the latter we understand
is very favorable.
Heavy Tobacco Deliveries.
Te-day has been a busy one in and about
the tobacco packing houses. The wet
weather of Thursday and Friday moist
ened the leaf and put it in geed condition
for handling. The tobacco growers lest
no time in availing themselves of the fav
orable conditions for delivering, and at an
early hour this morning hundreds of
wagons of all descriptions leaded with
baled leaf were te be seen heading for the
several city warehouses, where they
formed Hue and awaited their turn te un
load. Many of them were net unleaded
until this afternoon.
Complaints Dismissed.
The complaints against; David Kauftman,
charging him with drunken and disorderly
conduct aud assault and battery en a boy
named Funk, were set down for a hearing
before Alderman Barr yesterday afternoon.
The prosecutor failed te appear and the
cases were dismissed, defendant paying the
costs in the case charging him with drunk
en and disorderly conduct.

Te Elect sn Engineer.
On Monday cveniug the members of the
councils committee en fire engine and hose
companies aud the presidents of the several
fire companies of the city will assemble in
common council chamber for the purpose
of electing a chief engineer of the fire de
partment, vice Wm. J. Ferdncy, resigned.
Male of Horses. '
Samuel Hess & Sen, auctioneers, sold
at public sale yesterday at E. Hambright's
hotel en the Columbia, turnpike, 10 head
of Mary laud horses for A. Favourite at an
average of $133.70 per head. The highest
one sold for $179.

Black's Complicity ia the Star Reute Itauus.
Philadelphia, May 7. At neon te-day
Jeseph R. Black, the business partner cf
Albert U. tlarmer, member of Congress
from the FifthPejinaylvania district, Jeseph
Funk, S. BlackmaB,.aud W. R. Casen,
who were taken into custody in this city
yesterday for complicity in a febeme te
defraud the United States government by.
putting in straw bids te secure the
contracts for carrying the mails, were
arraigned for a hearing before United
States Commissioner Smith in the
United States court room in the presence
of a large, number of people. The govern
ment was represented by United States
District Attorney Valentine, while each of
the accused was represented by eminent
members of the Philadelphia bar.
A large number of witnesses were ex
amined, during which it was '.shown that
the bends had been executed in Black's of
fice in this city. Mr. Black made a state
ment in which be acknowledged that he
was the contractor, and the ether people
who had been taken into custody had bid
for him in order that the proper security
might be entered, and he further stated
that he was able and perfectly willing
te indemnify the government for any
less that they might have sustained. The
testimony previous te this statement
being made was of such a conflicting
character as te the complicity of Black,
that the commissioner was unable te give
a decision in the matter ; finally after a two
hours hearing all of the accused were held
in $5,000 each for a further hearing en
Monday at neon.

Shocking Tragedy In a Ceal Shaft.
Carbendalk, Kas., May 7. A fire oc
curred yesterday afternoon among weed
work at the feet of oue of Green's coal
shafts, by which twenty men were im
prisoned in the mine. When reached
three were dead and three ethers were
brought up unconscious, but they are uew
slowly recovering. There are three missing
and it is probable that they arc dead.
The Small-pox Epidemic.
Adams, Mass., My7. The small-pox
is spreading bore te se 'great an extent
that the beard of health have become
afarmed and a pest-house is being built
half a mile from the town.- All the pa
tients will be removed there when proper
attendance can be given them. Tkcre are
thirty cases here, but none in North
Adams. A local paper charges that there
has been gross carelessness from the start
in the management of the disease.

Cowboys Kill a Constable.
Cincinnati, O., May 7. A special dis
patch from Cedar Mills, Texas,
says : " On Thursday last Mr. Dallas
Hedges, a constable of Graysen county,
attempted te arrest two cowboys, whose
najpesare net ffiven, one of whom shot
Hedges dead, whereupon both of them
galloped away." The dispatch adds that
this is the eighth murder at Cedarvillc
within twelve months.
Husband Head and Wife Insane.
Jeksey Citt, May 7. Jehn Cellinc, of
this city, has been missing from home
since Tuesday last and yesterday bis wife
made a fruitless trip te the Morgue in
New Yerk in search of him. While re-
turning en a ferry beat she became vio
lently insane and was committed te an
asylum. This morning her husband's
dead body was found in the river.
Ceal Leaders' Strike Ended.
Pert Jervis, May 7. The strike of the
Pennsylvania cea. company's leaders at
Hawley, Pa., which began last 3Ienday
ended yesterday. The leaders demanded
$1.25 for ten and a half hours work and 12c.
per hour for extra work. The company
offered them $1.80 for eleven hours work
and 13 cents per hour for extra work,
which terms the men accepted.

Herse Shee; N. J., May' 7. Charles
Hartman, mate of the schooner Mary
Emma, of Onancock, Va., at anchor here,
fell overboard last night and was drowned.
He belongs te Locust Mount, Va., and has
a wife and six children residing therO. His
body was recovered this morning.
The Bakers' Strike.
New Yerk, May 7. There were no
new developments in the bakers' strike
te-day and about 200 men are still out of
work. The officers of the union are of
opinion that by te-morrow all the men will
have returned te feik under, the new
agreement.
