LANCASTER DAILY IKTfiLIJGENCEK, FRIDAY, APRTL 29. 1881. iUwastn fnteiKgencer. FRIDAY HVENINQ, AFBIL 29, lMb THE ISLES OF LONG AGO. O lovely irtca se far away In life's vast, Burning sea, round their slope the sunbeams play Their silent melody. Abee their heights the changing skies Their lights and shadows threw. As they agafri before me 1 Ise The Isle of Leng Age. O lovely Sales, forever fair, And clothed with creen they stand ; Xe change or death can enter there, In that fair summer land. Where happy birds, In shady bowers, Sing with the broeklet's flew, And myrtles deck, and fadeless flowers. The Isles of Leng Age. I've sailed out en the sea of life, Tar from their pearly strand. Yet often thre ugh the din and stiltu I see that summer land. The ocean surging round it there With ceaseless ebb and flew ; be grand and pure and deathless fair The Isles of Leng Age. Time, while life's mighty tide moves en, Stands ever at the helm, Te guide o'er quicksands and through storm Safe te a higher realm ; There, standing en the hills of light, Te view the scene below. I'll see thorn with a clearer sight The Isles el Leng Age. Far from the ceaseless rash and iear Ut liic's vast, surging sea, They stand In light forever uieic. In Ged's eternity. Thore In that blcascd land of truth, Xe death or change te knew, I'll walk again the ways et youth, The Isles of Leng Age. F. S. Leve joy, in Moslem 7'rameripl, JerTersenian Democracy. A Ringing Appeal for "the Cardinal Ioo Ieo Ioe trlnes." At the late meeting of the Democratic county committee of Yerk county the chairman, A. F. Geesy, after compliment ing and congratulating the committee upon the noble work accomplished by the Dem acracy of Yerk count', in the late presi dential campaign, added the following address : "There remains oue ethor matter te which I desire te call your attention. The ordinary organization of the Democratic party is equal te the demands of ordinary times. But these are net ordinary times. Four years age the will of the people was overcome by fraud and force, and the president elect was net allowed te take his seat. Last year, by the unscrupulous use of the vast patronage of the government, thus fraudulently retained, and by open intimi dation and corruption of voters, together with an iinmeuse array of great, corpora tions and monopolies against the people another victory was achieved by the party in power. The purpese of that party, no longer disguised, is revolution the con solidation of all powers in the federal government, at the expense of the states and the people these powers te be exer cised by the few and for their own berefit as against the many. This is what they call ' strong government,' the ' system of Hamilton,' which they insist must supersede the system of Jeffersen upon which our free institutions were founded, and have new subsisted for a hundred years. " Hew is this revolution te be met ? It was attempted en a smaller scale, while the patriots of '7G were still alive, te meet aud rebuke it. The same classes, the same influences that is te say, the great traders, the suddenly enriched specula ters, the owners et the national debt uniting with Hamilton's national bank, the treasury and the officeholders deter mined te override the states and establish a ' strong government ' in the room of the young republic. That effort culmin ated in the latter part of Jehn Adams' ad ministration, in the infamous alien laws, sedition laws, commercial restrictions the germs of these under which this gen oration suffers and in the shameless struggle, net unlike that which recently proved successful, te seat a president agaiust the expressed will of the people in tSOl. Hew did the Republicans of that day face and avert the first grand conspiracy te destroy the republic ? By the establish ment, whei ever possible, of what were call ed ' Democratic societies,' iu which the people met, discussed the designs of their enemies, contrived the means of defeating them, encouraged each ether iu the geed fight for liberty, and directed aud concen trated public opinion se as te make it most effectual. These societies were mighty engines in the politics of that gloomy period. Their influence was wide spread and irresistible. They spoke the veice of the people and made it respected. The result was the complete overthrew of the Federal party ; the sullen abandon ment of the dark schemes of the ' mono meno mone crats ;' the election of Jeffersen, and the putting of the 'ship of state en her Re publican track again.' They ' saved the constitution,' te use the expression of Jeffersen ' at the last gasp.' " Will net the same means be equally effective new? There can be no doubt of it. Imagine Jeffersen Democratic associa tions established at convenient points in every district, wherein intelligent Demo crats might meet te discuss the affairs of the country, te expose te each ether the dangerous character of the measures with which we are threatened, and te notify by resolution, by address, or by deputies, te their fellow Democrats and te the public, their opinions and their will! What pewer of perverted government, of patron age, of monopoly, of corruption, however, combined or maneeuvred by greed and ambition, could withstand the thunders of the popular dabs ! ''Again: Ic is beyond measure import ant that the Democratic party, being the party of the people, should be managed by the people, and net by professional politi cians and bosses, as the se-called Republi can party is managed. These associations would afford a ready, convenient and regular method of expressing the people's wishes with regard te party concerns, local, state and national ; but without displacing any part of the usual and neces sary machinery. "And again: The body of doctrine taught by Thorns Jeffersen aud his com patriots constitute the principles of the democratic party, in rigid adherence te them, aud steadfast opposition te every ether system, by whatever delusive name it may be called, lies net only the public safety, but the salvation of the Democratic party. If there have been new departures from these, let us abandon them. If we have wandered in any particular from the faith of our fathers, let us return te it. If the organization of the great party, de voted te the defence of popular rights, has become enfeebled, by divisions arising from modern errors let us promptly cor rect the eners and se heal the divisions. Upen one thing at least we are all agreed, and that is that the teachings of Themas Jeffersen are the only true and infallible touch-stone of faith. Let us then, by associating together, under his name, and pledging anew our allegiance te .the sacred principles which he formulated, erect a common standard of doctrine and thus in sure the complete harmony and early suc cess et the democratic party. "I de net recommend that these associa tions be incorporated with the present reg ular organization of the party, but that each association shall be independent of every ether, and that they be connected ) mainly by friendly correspondence. Es tablished only by the voluntary action of the Democratic voters, they need net be expensive or burdensome in any way. Their meetings would be regulated by the desires of the members or the exigencies of public affairs, but the organization, enee established, would be there and available for any emergency, like the vig ilance committees of the Revolution, and the 'Democratic Societies,' which con tributed se much te save the constitution in 1800, dissolved the Federalist conspiracy of that day, and gave us the glorious Democratic-Republican administrations of Jeffersen, -Madisen, Menree and Jacksen. " This. then, is no new thing under the sun. It was the plan of action adopted by the illustrious founders of the Demo cratic party te meet dangers almost pre cisely similar te these which confront "s. It has the hearty approval and recommen dation of such leaders of this day as' Samuel J. Tilden, Winfield Scott Han cock, Samuel J. Randall and William A. Wallace. With the weight of these names and many ethers I might mention, in its favor, I need hardly say that in new bringing it te your attention, I am moved only by a profound sense of duty as the chairman of this committee. I offer the following resolution : "'Resolved, That this committee recom mends the formation of Jeffersen Demo cratic associations wherever practicable within the limits of this county ; and that each member of the committee will con tribute his best endeavors toward the es tablishment of -an association or assecia -tiens by his constituents.' " All of which was unanimously adopt ed and ordered te be published. Tbe Kay te Health. Have you found the key te perfect health aud strength? That's important ; for linens bought in Naw Yerk may be several years old, and you knew starched linens de net improve by age. The dressings used by tbe manufacturers is net se de structive as starch ; but it does injure the fabrie in time. We have another advantage in prices. We gain the importer's profit. The result is we get tbe best linens iu the world, iu the best possible condi tion, and for the least money anybody can get them for. We can give you the importers' profit, and still have enough left. New it is proper for te consider that somebody else may be doing the same thing, and afford tbe very same advantages.
