Loek te Last Tear's Grafts.
Germantown Telegraph.
New is the time te examine the grafts
set last year. In many cases it will be
found that the stocks, by the growing of
the grafts, have split open, exposing- the
inner weed, and admitting air and water.
This should at once be tied tightly with
strong twine, and surrounded with fresh
wax, removing any hard substance that
may have get into the split. This will
frequently repair the mischief, otherwise
the work will always be an eyesore and
the parts never become firmly attached
and make a geed connection, and of course
a perfect union.
Frequently double the number of scions
are set the stock will well sustain. These
should be carefully gene ever and the ex.
cess removed. Unless the stock is stout
say from three te six inches in diameter
net mere than two grafts should be left,
and they should be as nearly as possible
opposite te 4tach ether. When the growth
has bceu rapid the graft should be pruned.
This will of course increase the number of
brandies and give the tree a mere compact
form.
Crewing Cantaloupes.
A great many farmers still think there
is a mystery in growing this best of all
fruits. lu previous years we did a great
deal in these celums te remove the idea,
and iu teaching them the way by which
as geed melons can be grown here in
Pennsylvania as anywhere else, se far as
supplying the domestic consumption. Iu
fact we have raised better cantaloupes
upon our own premises than we ever pur
chased in the Philadelphia market, and
of a far larger size. They require mere
labor here, of course, iu our comparatively
solid soil than in New Jersey, Delaware,
Maryland, &c.. but for home use this is
net te be considered.
The hills should be duir out a feet and
filled with short barnyard manure, soil
and saud, or turnpike dirt in place of sand
Plant live or six seeds in a hill about an
inch below the surface at equal distance,
and when the plant is three or four inches
long remove all but two or three. Just
before the vines begin te run give the bed
a thorough hoeing, and if convenient
though it is net indispensable scatter
ever the bed a coat of turnpike dirt or
sand. After the vines have commenced
te run they should never be disturbed,
otherwise the rootlets which attach them
selves te the soil as the vine grows, and
en which both vine and fruit depend
mainly for their sustenance, will lese a
large proportion of this support, and
hence will net produce as large melons or
of se geed a quality.
We prefer level culture, for the reason
that the soil will net dry out se readily as
when the hilling system is followed. In
wet seasons hilling is best ; but the
chances arc in favor of rather dry weather
in June, July and August.
Tree Planting.
This is a subject that cannot be loe often
recurred te as the season comes when the
work should be done. Owing te the back
wardness of the present season, tree plant
ing may be done yet for a week or two.
Spring has its advantages ever the fall for
this work, though fall also possesses its
advantages. As a rule, better success at
tends spring planting ; but the hurry of
work is se much greater than in the fall,
that it is sometimes overlooked, while fall
admits of mere leisure. Fer transplanting
large trees the fall is always preferred and
the transfer should be made as seen as the
tree, for the season is done growing which is
readily seen by the turning of the leaves.
In the fall, especially, thctrccs should be
firmly staked te prevent them from being
disturbed and admitting down the stem a
surplus of water. This security can be
assisted by hilliug-up the soil around the
stem, thus turning off the water, In the
spring this can be removed and a little
basin formed te catch the rains through
the heated lerm. By setting trees out
early iu the fall it gives the roots a chance
te take sonic held aud establish themselves
se that when the spring opens the tree can
go right en growing.
In setting trees at any time, a large hole
should be dug, the soil at the bottom
loosened, and the roots spread out carefully
with the hand as nearly iu the way they
naturally grew as possible. If the roots
are very long and numerous they should
be pruned, and at the same time the ten
of the tree should also be pruned te
somewhat mere than the same extent.
Frequently the roots are broken off and
bruised in lifting, aud when this is the
case the injured portions should be cut off
and the top also correspondingly. Mulch
ing should he applied the first season,
being changed two or tin ee times, and at
each time, or of tcner, the ground around
the tree should be carefully stirred. All
newly transplanted trees should be staked
and te de this prepeily two stakes should
be used, standing them at an angle like
the letter A, and the stem se protected as
net te be abraded or rubbed.
The Key te Health.
Have j ou found tin; key te perfect health
and strcngtii? It is Kidney-Wert, the only
remedy tlisit overcomes at once the Inaction
et tliu kMueys and bowels. It purities the
bleed by cleansing the system of leul humors
ami by giving btreugtb te the liver, kidneys

INENS.
LINEN'S!
We have received new linens from Belfast, Barusley, Duntermline, Lisle,
Brussels, Ghent, Silesia, Bohemia. We have ransacked all Europe for linens,
and have a variety of both fabric and finish that could net be gathered in the
American market. The goods arc fresh, tee. That's important ; for linens
bought in Njw Yerk may be several years old, and you knew starched linens
de net impreve by age. The dressings used by the manufacturers is net se de
structive as starch ; but it does injure the fabric in time. We have another
advantage in prices. We gain the importer's profit.
The result is we get the best linens in the world, iu the best possible condi
tion, and for the least money anybody can gut them for. We can give you
the importers profit, and still have enough left.
New it is proper for te consider that somebody else may be doing the same
thing, and afford the very same advantages. Se, if you please, whatever you
wish te buy get samples of it from us and from ethers, and compare.
Or buy our goods, if you like ; and if you can 'de as well elsewhere, bring
ours back. This is rather a brave challenge ; for, you knew nobody wants
remnants.
The linens new in are sheeting, pillow, bolster and shirting linens, towels,
tewelings, doilies, napkins, table cloths and table linens.
