The brief dispatch announcing the death
of Jeseph Lane, which came from Oregon
a day or two since, can Jhavc had but very
little significance for the great majority of
the people who read it. Yet the man te
whom it related was at 0110 time 0:10 of
the foremost figures in the republic. Had
he died thirty years age, the nation would
have gene iu mourning for him, yet se
fleeting is fame in cur country that the
present generation scarcely recalls his
name and knows next te nothing et his
most eventfnl history. Jeseph Lane's
grandfather was an American, born near
the present site of Rale urh, N. C, in the
early colonial times. He and his
two brother did geed services
during the war of the Revolution.
His son, Jehn Lane, the father of Jeseph,
was at the battle of Kins's Mountain and
served in the patriot army until the sur
render of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He
voted for Geerge Washington for presi
dent aud lived te sec Jacksen in the same
office. The son of this old soldier was
born in North Carolina in 1S01. Early in
life he went te Indiana. Latwr he became
a power iu the politics of the West. When
the Mexican war broke out he was ene of
the first te go te the front and by hard
lighting and distinguished bravery wen
his way te a major generalship. Return
ing te his home, ail Indiana united in do
ing him honor, and later en President
Polk, iu slight recognition of his services,
made him governor of the territory of Or
egon, te which place he was reappointed
by President Pierce. In 18e2 he had thir
tceu votes iu the national convention
which nominated Cass for president, and
at one time during that memorable meet
ing seemed almost sure of the nomination.
As old William Allen used in after years
te relate. "Jic Lane came nearer being
president than any man who ever missed."
But though he missed the presidency, he
did net lese influence with his party. In
ISeO he was elected te the United States
Senate from the new state of Oregon. He
sympathized with the Seuth in the strug
gle then pending, and later was nominated
ler vice president ou the ticket with Breck
inridge.U He cat t icd eleven of the slave
states, but was buried out of si j.-lit in the
free North. Little has been heard of him
since. lie spent the last years of his life
in his favorite Oregon. Seme months age,
te a party ofexcursieuists who called en
him for a speech, he said : "I uome net as
a celebrated man or a distiniruished sol
dier, but as a humble citizen of Oregon.
True. I have been accorded some fame as
a soldier, aud I am credited with having
served my country faithfully and well.
These laurels were net wen by my
self, however. My command wen them
for me. Any man with such a com
mand could net help achieving fame. I
came te the North -west in 134ti as gover
nor of what was then Oregon Territory,
embracing all the country lying between
the fortieth aud forty-second parallels, in
cluding what are new Washington and
Idaho territories and the state of Oregon.
Only once during my term of eflice did I
have occasion te visit this portion of the
territory. It was en the first of July, new
almost thiity years age, that a courier ar
rived at Oregon City, bearing the news
that a Mr. Wallace, living en Budd's In
let, where Olyiuphi is new situated,
had been murdered by the Indians.
With an army of six men, tried and true
comrades in arms with me iu the conflict
with 3Icxice, we pteeeeded down the
Willamette river iu a canoe te the Colum
bia, dewu-the Columbia, aud thcuce up
the Cewiltz te the Catholic mission,
lien: we procured mules and horses and
added thrce fiesh lcciuits te our force.
We took the Indians by surprise, and de
manded a surrender of the murderers.
The old chief after viewing our force and
looking mc in the eye, concluded te accede
te this demand, and the murderers
were accordingly delivered up, tried
aud executed. I'll is made geed Indians
of thrm." During the same speech Gen.
Laue, referring te his service during the
Mexican war, said: "Twejtars age I
looked ever the 'old aimy register, and I
found -tltere only live of the seventeen
American generals who enlcied the 3Iex
iean war surviving. Of the seventeen
who ciiteied that struggle, fourteen
were younger than myself. One by
one these brave men have answered te
the last roll call. Since I last looked ever
the register, Pillow has been called away.
Cadwaladcr aud dishing followed, and
ou the first of the present month Shields
answered the Miniuieus aud passed ever
the, durk river, across the va'Iey and shad
ow of death. Dining the last few years
the roll has been called once in six months
aud one by one these salient men have re
sponded.' Jcseph Lane has new been
