LANCASTER DAILY INTfiLIJGENCEK, MONDAY, APRIL 18. 1881. Eancastet fnfeiligencer. MONDAY STONING, APRIL 18, 1881." TtlMM. The New Yerk Market. U. s. Tobacco Journal. In old goods, among which we may new properly place '79 tobaccos, a quiet though extensive business was done. Out-of-town buyers, fearful lest they be left without an assortment of geed wrappers before the '80 is fit te use, hastened te secure every thing in the way of profitable lets of wrap pers. By reason thereof prices are once mere en the increase. This laying in of old stock had the effect of setting afloat rumors .of many, sales of '80 tobacco, and if all them prove true, an unprccendenteuly early market opening of new stock has taken place. The positively known transactions in '80 tobaccos were 1,100 cases of Pennsylvania and 300 cases of Connecticut. Though we have serious reason te doubt the veracity of the spreaders of the reports, ether transactions in '80 stock thus early in the season would be nothing surprising. The fear that a great portion of the '80 tobacco might turn out poorly has hastened the sale of '79 tobaccos. In fact, no such prices as are quoted new would rule for '79 Pennsylvania if this fear had net taken a firm root among manufacturers aud jobbers. It is tins fear which makes themexamiee closely all of the '80 stock in the hands of reputable parties, and rapid sales et many choice packings will no doubt be repotted seen. Hew far peo ple are justified in allowing this fear te govern their operations the near future will tell. We would advise our readers te inspect in person all of the '80 crops be fore investing in any special one, be it Ohie, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Pennsylva nia or state. The representations made by parties regarding this or that crop may be intended te be honest; but it cau't be supposed that parties who have what is termed a "sticker " will make special ef forts te impart the intolligenco te an un appreciative public. Pennsylvania Crep '80 : 1010 cases, p. t, Crep '79 : 700 cases, fine running, 23 cents ; medium, 10 te 18 cents ; low. Vi cents ; fillers, 7 cents. Connecticut Crep '80 : 300 cases wrap pers, p. t. Crep '79 : 300 cases, mostly wrappers, 24 te 32 cents. Ohie Crep '79 : 120 evscs running, 9 .cents. Wisconsin Crep '79 : 200 cases Havana seed, 1G te 18 ceuts. Havana Market very active. Sales 1200 bales. 230 of which were of the '80 crop, and were bought by a city cigar manufacturer. Prices unchanged, but firm. "Cheese It." At a recent meeting of the Lancaster, Pa., agricultural society, the question was argued at length whether the manu facture of butter and cheese could be car risd en successfully en a farm where the raising of tobacco forms a prominent fea ture. Whatever may be the opinion- of interested parties we, for ourselves, em phatically say yes. Tlie farmer "who in Lancaster county can raise and sell tobac co can successfully combine with it the manufacture of cheose because a gicat many of the tobacco buyers there don't knew the difference between green tobacco and green cheese. Tbe Philadelphia Market. Leal. Improvement is noticeable in the manip ulation of cigar leaf ; a goodly number of Western buyers are en the market anx ious te pick up desirable old leaf, there fore such stock is held by holders firmly in price ; buyers must recollect that old stock is fast going into the hands of con sumers, and cannot be duplicated. Nearly all classes of leaf show increased sales ; hence, upon the whole, this branch of trade may be considered improved and improving. Havana As usual, trade is brisk. Hogshead leaf Moves moderately.
