LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENGEK, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 1881. Haucastet Intelligencer. WEDNESDAY EVENING, APRIL 6, 1881. Farmer and Gardener. Setting out Currnuu and Gooseberries. Germantown Telegraph. Beth the currant and the gooseberry de better te grew from cuttings than from the roots. The weed of last yeai'j growth must be taken, cut it iute pieces from eight te ten inches in length, and insert about half the length in the usual pre pared garden soil, press the ground firmly with the feet, mulch, and there will be no danger of net crewing. Set them where they are desired te remain permanently. If a small tiee and net a bush is preferred, cut out all the eyes entering the ground. If a bush let the eyes remain. We prefer the bush for two reasons, the first is, mere is obtained ; the second, it is longer lived. In fact the bush will live half a century, only requiring thinning out of the weed once in a while. As te currants we prefer decidedly the old Dutch Red. It is net quite se large as some ethers, but it bears as abundantly and is less acid and of bet ter quality. Of gooseberries, we prefer the Downing. It is of geed quality, an excellent bearer, and lias never mildewed upon our premises. f no Culture of Cern. The name corn in England is applied te all grains, as we think it should be ; and our Indian corn is there called maize a name used only with respect te this grain, and hence leads te no coufusien. In its cultivation no crop is better understood by our fanners as a iuJe, aud yet none se well known formerly varied se much in the modes of cultivation. Forty years age and it is sometimes done new the ground was plowed, then harrowed two or three times, then cress plowed, and then tlie rows struck out in the direction of the first plowing. . New. generally, this mode is abandoned, and there is only one plowing before the rows are marked out, and the seed is chopped by a planter, which separates the grains in the hill much mere uniformly than when dropped by hand Three stalks arc the limit for a hill, but it very frequently is reduced te two. The distance between the hills and the i ews ranges from three te three and a-half feet, the yield being about the same, though it depends, like every ether crop, upon the extent, of the manuring and cul tivation. Of la' year.; ihi. drill .system has been adopted i1 a geed many farmers, but it does nut seem te increase in favor ; rather the ievT.-e. It is net disputed that a lit tle additional yield mav be obtained from the .y.stt'ni ; but it is at an increase cost of hand-labor, .-e that in the end there is no gain, if an', worth mentioning. Where the extent of the crop is small it probably pesM'sses some advantage, but we de net think otherwise. Latterly the crop lias been planted e.trlier than formerly say the last week inApii! for the reason that in case of failure t come up from retting by a cold, wet soil, there will be plenty of time for repSiuiiiig. IJut this will scarcely stand, inasmuch if planting is delayed from the r.th te the 15th of May, the ground will have become warm and the excessive moisture disappeaied. Besides the leth of May is none tee late for putting iu the crop. In tact, we regard it as better than an earlier dale. Ice Uerge ISreKcii. The great ice gorge in the Missouri river batween Sienx City and Yankton, said te have been ever lilty miles long, has given way, and the water which had been banked up se long is new rushing down the stream. The agent of the Milwaukee & St. Paul raihead at Vermillion, Dakota, repeits that all except two or three build ings at that point have been swept away. The water is up te the reefs of the cars at the depot, and at Yankton the water is up te the front of .Tenk's hotel, 21 feet, above low water mark, and still rising G iuches an hour. The gorge has caused the liver te run out of its channel, aud it is follow ing the bluffs from Yankton te Vermillion en the Iowa side. Fears are entertained thet it will make a permanent channel that way. It it dots, it will run across the country fiem Vermillion and empty into the lic Sioux river, three miles north of Elk point, leaving a large tract et land en the Nebraska side. This would be a tre mendous cut oil" from Dakota, but one net at all strange with the Big Muddy, which has done such tltm-is before. Hcvi'iits'Pii Years in Bed. Twenty years age Avery Wixam, who lived near iiammouusperi, mum van coun ty, X. Then he again took te his bed and remained there until he died a few days age at the age of 81 years. A Geed Indersement. H'ni.
