His Hale old Age Ascribed te Salt.
Lorenze A. Pickles, of Newfane, ped
dles trees throughout western New Yerk.
He is 70 years old, and measures sir feet
and five inches in height. He has thir
teen sisters and eight brothers and he is
the smallest of the entire family. One
brother, who lives in Kentucky, is seven
feet two and end-half inches in height, and
weighs 273 pounds, although he is spare
in flesh. The littlest sister is six feet five
and one-half inches. The family is scat
tered, no two living in the same state.
Lorenze Pickles has the appearance of a
man of 40. He never wears a coat, and
gees without stockings winter and sum
mer. He has two pupils in each eye. Te
distinguish objects clone by, Mr. Pickles
uses powerful magnifying glasses. He
can read print and see things at a greater
distance, without the aid of glasses, than
it is possible for persons with the natural
eye te see.
He never tasted liquor of any kind in
his life and never drinks water. Three
small cups of tea a day, winter aud sum
mer suffice te quench Mr. Pickles' thirst,
lie never cats fresh meat. His chief ar
ticle of diet is salt perk, although he likes
salt meats and fish He eats two table table table
spoensful of salt every day and prefers
salt te sugar in his tea. Pie and cake or
sweetmeats of any kind he never tasted.
He says he believes his hale aud hearty
condition is due mainly te the salt he
uses. Mr. Pickles is a widower, but he
has twedaughteis. One is 17 years old,
the ether 12. The eldest, is 0 feet and
half an inch tall. Tiie youngest is e feet
!) inches, and their father says they are
both still growing.

Seme Facta About tbelr Manufacture ana
What They are Made Of.
The bung is a homely device, lacking
altogether the symmetry of an obelisk and
having little even of the grace which corks
often possess. But its uses arc of a must
important kind, and wherever liquids are
contained in casks aud barrels there must
the bung be aise.
It is almost impossible te estimate the
quantity of bungs made and used annually,
but the number is well up in the million.
Thf-y are made of weed well seasoned, aud
arc cut by machinery which is patented.
In no country aie se many bungs made as
iu the United States, for uewheic else hiv
the weeds which are used se plenti
ful. Oak, hickory, spruce and pine aie
among the varieties utilized, and the bung
factories are Muttered about the country
iu the neighborhoods whcic the weeds?
used are found. By cuttiag the bungs
before shipping the cost of transporting
the waste material Is saved. A great
many bungs for beer casks are scut both
te Germany and England from this coun
try, net because they arc hotter, but
because they aie cheaper than the.se made
abcead. Bungs are cut by peculiar
and ingenious machinery, which
works against the grain of the
weed, taperiug the hung with the
grain. In many cases tiie taper is made
but slight iu the cutting, and then the
bung is submitted te a powerful cemprcs
sien te increase the taper.
Bungs of ale anil beer barrels arc of a
standard si.c, mcas-uiing 1J inches, while
bungs for oil bands are 2 inches. Whisky
barrel bungs aie used ever and ever again.
Beer and oil barrel bungs are always pick
ed out, because hammering the staves te
start the bungs is sure te injure the coat
ing of the barrels.

Brandy as a Medicine
The following article was voluntarily sent te
Mr. II. li. Maymaker, Agent ler Reigart's Old
Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi

the Brandy referred te in his regular practice.
It is cemiiic ailed te the attention of these at

Indigestion and Dyspepsia.
BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.
This new much abused Alcoholic stimulant
was ftever intended as a beverage, but te b

of some of this destructive diseases which
sweep away their annual thousands of victims.
With a puiely philanthropic motive we pre

A hard-working tanner had been ulllicted
with an exhaustive Dyspepsia lera number of
years; his stomach would reject almost every
kind of reed; he had sour eructatiens con

restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread,
and as u beverage he used McGrunn's Reet
