OUK REGULAR .CORRESPONDENCE. High winds have been blowing for sev eral days, and the river has been very rough. Fer this reason no rafts have ap peared yet. Seme have come down, as far as Ilarrisburg, but the great bulk are above. A number of merchants are in Leck Haven, and some sales are being made at prices a little higher than last sea son. On Friday a sneak thief stele a valuable shad from the p"emises of Edward Stahl en Frent street. The demand for onion sets is much greater than the supply, se much se that they are bringing from 513 te 50 cents a quait in this vicinity. Seme one must have a corner in onions. " Fertuna "' is a geed name for Bennett & Jlaldenian's factory, en account of its beuedictiue propensities. One of the firm set an example some time age, and new there aie four mere marriages among their operatives inside of a month, three in piespcct and one consummated. On Saturday "Dec" Leeds' horse broke his hitching strap and ran away from the CrObS Keys hotel where he was tied and made for home. But fortunately net be coming frightened he managed the short turns and the distance of five or six squalen without aeing any aamage te himself or the buggy. On Suntlay, centrary te expectation, Rev. J. E. McEImeyle returned te fill his pul pit. He had becurcd the premise of an other minister te fill his pulpit, but that gentleman was unavoidably prevented from coming. Mr. J. C. Weed preached his first ser mon in the Methodist church en Sunday te a well-filled house. On Siturday even ing the congregation held a festival in their Sunday school room, in order te raise funds for the payment of the interest ou their chuich debt, and succeeded in cleaii.ig?IO The new pastor will move into the prepcity just vacated by Rebert Turner, jr. Nathan Djer, who left Marietta for the West several weeks age, has come east again, te some neighboring town. The Exchange bank, besides declaring a dividend added as much as the dividend te their surplus They doubled their de posits dining the year. Beth banks are in a fleniNliiiig condition. ThefcFirst na tional is considered one of the most reli able in the state. Jehn Stum returned from a trip te the West en Saturday. Hairy Ficdcrick is in town again. On Friday three mere car leads of cattle were sent te Philadelphia and three car leads of tobacco te St. Leuis. A lew rafts get down en Saturday. Twe wcie blown evr te Ceylc's and two went en te Wrightsville. Tobias Stehman received a telegram en Friday announcing the death of his moth er in C.u lisle, Pa. Her age was 93 years. On Sii uid ly Mr. Stelimau went up te the Itinera!, which took place Sunday. Gn. Cameren has a very interesting r'xttngraph of himself and friends at Nassau, New Providence. Thd tropical sur sur leuiuhngs contrast with the absence of (eIi.ijjc in this region Fient street had a ripple the ether morning a' about hall-past eight o'clock, caused bv a iiiuaway team and a smash up. F. J. Schneider, proprietor of a bake ry en F out stieet, has been in the habit of Ivaiin bis hoi se stand unbridled and hitched in the inherV wagon while rating his mei mug iced, in au alley that runs from Marietta street te the railroad. He has been considered safe, but a west bound train frightened iiiui and he rushed down the alley and up Freut street en a race with the train. Oa reaching Sam. Boyd and family, of Fair field, moved from that place the begin ning of the present week, te West Vir ginia, where he has bought a large and very valuable fai in. Mr. Boyd is an ex cellent practical fai nier and intends te en gage in that vocation in his new borne much mere extensively than he could here. He ta!;t3 with him the best wishes of his old fi lends ami neighbei.s ; a darkey and Mr. Jehn Beeth. Libe:ty Square lyceum closed last Fri day c citing w ith a full house. It has had a very successful season for its first, and in the class of the " lower end," stands only one below the old and firmly estab lished lyceum, and would like te spell it down, but repeated efforts have proved that seit of thing vain. Our farmers have any quautity of geed tobacco yet unsold, and are anxious te see bnjers ; they care nothing about lookers. Last week Mr. Samuel Leng delivered his crop of tobacco te Lancaster, and found when it was weighed at the ware house that it tipped the beam at just one half of what its tipping was at home. It was found upon investigation that Mr. Leng had weighed en the wrong side of the beam, and that his yield was net se extraordinary as he had thought it. May we call it Leng measure ? Last Friday was the fiftieth birthday of Mr. Edward Ambler and his twin sister, Mrs. Ann Lamberu, and they were given a very pleasant and complete surprise at the residence of Mr. Ambler by about sixty of their friends, who made it for themselves and the twins a wholesome twin is Ed. a memorable occasion. Of course the surprising ladies came pro vided with the best things for the taste the stomach was an after dinner consideration, or lamentation that their rccipt books could recom mend, and the dinner was a pronounced success. It is true that some et his visitors thought that it was net really necessary for Ed. te endeavor te eat himself te the size of a serai centennial, but there are always some fault-finders and the object of their concern didn't seem te mind tbem, but ate right en as if for a wager. On Saturday fifty friends of Mr. Alexan der Stevenson and wife gave them a sur prise it being the occasion of the thirtieth annivci sary of their marriage. If these surprise parties would make it a point te invite your itemizcr he would be better prepared te give glowing account, from notes taken en the scene of edible carnage. It would be safe te say, however, that it was a success as they alway are. By a serious upset last winter Mr. Stevenson bad hia arm broken but is improving as fast as could be expected. I might add, as a feet note, that Mr. Stevenson is the enthusiastic Democrat in our township who voted a Garfield ticket for Hancock, by mistake ; without receiving any com fort from the sugar-plumb that many of our Republicans suck, of being en the " strong side."
