The friends of Miss Lizzie Kammerer will
be pained te learn of her death, which took
place last evening at CJ o'clock, although
the event was net an unexpected one, for
her disease was consumption and her last
illness confined her te her bed for fourteen
weeks, during a great part of which time
it was expected that she would be taken
away at any minute. Miss Lizzie was a
consistent member, of the Episcopal
church. She was possessed of a gentle
and lady-like disposition ; and, although
somewhat letired, was known loved and
respected by many in our community who
sincerely regret her les3. The parents
have the sympathy of all who knew of
their peculiar affliction in the less of three
daughters since their removal from Phila
delphia te this place about eight years
age. The funeral will take place en Fri
day afternoon at 1 o'clock.

Yesterday the trial trip down the river
was made by Fred Waller and Ike Hippie.
They took a geed seized timber raft and
went through all light. The present geed
ranuiug stage of the water enabled them
te get ever the reek that is in the ceur.se
but they say they could neL run en a much
lower stage. The rusk iu question is about
ten feet from the " Sliding Reck." where
a raft is compelled te go very close te the
shore. The river is about en a stand
still. Don't forget Mrs. Mary

COLUMBIA NEWS.
OUK BECCI.AK CORRESPONDENCE.
A special meeting of the school beard
was held last evening at the law office of
AV. 1$. Given, esq., with the members all
present. The salary of the superintend
ent of public schools was fixed at $1,400
per annum the same as heretofore and
action was taken en a report thai some
fences in " Tew Hill" alley had been tern
down. The following preamble and reso
lution, which were adopted, we present in
full, because we believe they will be of in
terest te Columbia tax .payers :
"Wnr.UE.vs, The contract for the collec
tion of the school tax for 1SS0 was given
te the collector at the rate of 31 per cent.:
and
" Whereas, It is greatly te the advant
age of the school beard that the school tax
should be collected before the close of the
present school year, therefore be it
" Resolved, That upon a full settlement,
by Themas B. Dunbar, collector, of the
tax duplicate for 18S0, en or before June
1, 1881, he, the said collector, be allowed
an additional commission of 14- per cent,
en the full amount collected.""
The five per cent, commission, which is
given te the collector by the increase of
the 1J per cent, embodied in the above
resolution, puts the collector's commis
sion where it has always steed prier te
this year, and is net " a new departure '
as may believed by some of our readers.
At a meeting of General Welsh pest
Jfe. 118, G. A. R., held last evening, it
was decided te have a "bean bake" for
the members of the pest at a very early
date. A number of lecruits were mus
tered in and the pest adjourned te meet
en Tuesday evening, March 29th.
Leuis Martini's company, which will ap
pear iu the opera house this evening, in
"Around the World in 80 Days," ar
rived here this morning, bringing with it
the scenery necessary te put the playwell
before our people.
The Citizens' band last evening gave te
some of citizens one of their premised ser
enades. Among the fortunate were Mr.
Jacob Sncath and a newly arrived couple
named Charles. Financially the band did
net realize much, but its members had a
geed feed.
P. S Brugh's drug store has just been
repaired in handsome style and the bar
room of the Franklin house was recently
subjected te the same treatment.
The proposed new establishment for the
manufacture of small articles in steel, of
which we have already spoken, will be
given a new turn in the development wheel
very shortly. In a couple of days wc will
have mere te say en this subject.
This very pleasant weather is being
taken advantage of by the farmers round
about. Among these who arc already
pleughing the ground is Mr. Henry Wisler
the well-known tiller of the soil residing
just beyond the borough limits. The soil
is in excellent condition te be turned up.
River Pilet Warren Brown, of Washing
ton borough, has recently received letters
from timber men up the river who say
that the ice has net yet been carried from
the upper portions of the north and west
branches of the Susquehanna, aud that
until it is carried away they will net start
any rafts towards the eastern markets.
Between here and the timber lands the
river is uew in geed rafting condition and
it is only the fears of what this late-moving
ice may de that causes this effectual
check. The trouble at Turkey Hill with
high water may be averted, as the
rocks in the channel arc sunken
te such a depth that a raft may pass ever
them without striking, in high water only.
A couple of light raits, which had been
been lying near here since last fall, have
been taken ever the Turkey Hill rocks
and through te Pert Deposit. The sunken
rock nearest the surface of the water was
felt for with the rear ear blade of euc of
the rafts as it was passed ever, and it was
feuud te be two feet or mere below the
jrater's level. With a fall of a feet in the
r?rer, however, it will net be safe te run
from here down. The river is yet falling.
Mr". Henry Stevenson, a former resident
of Celnmbia and well-known here, is lying
seriously ill at his home iu Duncannon.
Mr. Stevenson has several sons here, three
of whom arc in the service of the Pennsyl
vania railroad company in the different
offices iu town and ene as book-keeper at
H. F. Bruner's coal yard.
Mr Rebert Frey, of Alteena, of whose
illness wc speke a couple of days age, is
convalescing.
Wild Geese.
' This morning about half-past nine
-o'clock a fleck of wild geese flew ever this
-city. They were going in a northerly di di
.rcctieu and it is said te be a sign of warm
leather.
Tbe Bobrerstewa Bew.
Owen Coneys, who se severely stabbed
Michael Walsh during a fight at Deitnck's
tavern at Rohrcrstewn some two weeks
age, had a hearing before Alderman Mc
Conomy yesterday afternoon and gave bail
te answer at court for simple assault and
battery, it being in evidence that Walsh
commenced the disturbance, and that
Coneys acted in some measure in self de
fence. A counter assault for assault and battery
against Walsh was also returned te court
aud both of the accused gave bail in tbe
sum of $200 te answer.
Again en Deck.
Dr. Henry Carpenter, who for mere than
two months has been confined te tbe house
the greater part of the time te his bed
by a severe attack of typhoid pneumo
nia, resumed the practice of his profession
and for the first time since his illness, ap
peared en the streets te-day. He leeks a
little haggard, but will no doubt seen re
cover his fresh and robust form.
Tobacco Sales.
Moses Spangler, of East Earl, has sold
his crop te Skiles & Frey at 1C and 5 ; S.
Kurtz,of the same township, te same.at 20

A Drunken Peddler.
This afternoon a drunken peddler named
Owen Lamb was arrested en West King
street, for using vulgar and insulting lan
guage te ladies. He entered a number of
premises, aud when the ladies declined te
buy a polishing powder that he offered for
sale, he insulted them grossly. He was
arrested by Officers Eillinger and Shay,
who had great trouble in getting him te
the station house, en account of his obsti
nate resistance.
Darn Burned.
Last evening a frame barn, belonging te
a man named Gottshalk, who resides near
Brunerville in Warwick township, was
destroyed by fire. The contents of the
barn, including a cow and a heifer, were
burned. We have net learned whether
the barn, which is believed te liave been
set en fire was insured,
Clethes Thiel.
Last evening a thief went into the yard
of the Stevens house where some clothes
were hanging en a line, and he began tear
ing down the wash. A neighbor saw him
and quickly hurled a brick-bat at him.
The thief ran and iu jumping the fence
