SATURDAY VKKINO, MAS. 12. 1881.
VERNAL FAITH.
When heaven was stormy, earth was cold,
And sunlight shunned the world and wave.
Thought burrowed In the church-yard mould.
And led en dreams that haunt the grave.
But new thatbearen Is freed from strife ,
And earth's lull heart with rapture swells,
Thought sears through fields et endless life
Above the shining asphodels.
What flower that drinks the south wind's
breath,
W!;at sparkling leaf, what Hebe morn.
But flouts the sullen gray-beard Deatlu
And laughs our arctic doubts te scorn?
Pule scientist, scant of healtbtul bleed,
Your ghastly tomes one moment close ;
l'luck lreshness trem a spring-time bud.
Find wisdom in the opening rose.
Mark the white lily, wh03e sweet core
Hath many a wUd-bee swarm enticed.
And drew therefrem a honeyed lore
Pure as the tender creed of Christ !
Yea, even the weed, whieh upward holds
Its tiny ear past bower and lawn,
A lovelier faith than yours unfolds.
Caught from the far taint winds of dawn.
Paul H. Hayne.

What i Going en in the Shew World.
The chart for Mrs. Siddons leeks very
encouraging.
Maude Branscembc has gene te Eng
land. W. VT. Cele's circus is doing well in
Australia.
Pauline Markhara has signed a contract
for next season with Mr. M. B. Leavitt.
Columbia has been doing very well for
theatrical attractions lately.
A. J Talbot is one of the comedians
with Havcrly's New Mastodon minstrels.
Dan Rice has at last struck oil and his
circus is doing well in New Orleans.
Leuis James, Marie Wainwright and
Charles Plunkett are re-engaged with
Lawrence Banctt next season.
Sara Bernhardt returns te Europe en
May 4th. It is probable that Mr. Abbey
will go en the same steamer.
Fanny Davenport will produce the
" Princess of Bagdad '' in Bosten shortly.
The adaptation is by Hart Jacksen.
Gus Williams and company go te Cali
fornia. They open in San Francisce
about the latter part of April.
Mrs. Jehn Drew told an interviewer
that the dullest audiences she has played te
this season were these in Bosten.
Ilarrigan & Hart's new piece, " Mulli
gan's Silver Wedding," is said te be the
best of their scries.
Billy Andrews, proprietor of the old
Theatre Cemiquc, in this city, will bring
a female minstrel shewheic next week.
Mary Andersen closed a very successful
engagement at the Bosten theatre recent
ly. The receipts for one day ameunted te
ever $4,000.
Denier s pantomime troupe will have
one of the largest houses et the season.
They arc in Baltimore thu week te big
business.
The minstrels who appeared here en last
Saturday night are rehearsing a new act
entitled " Scenes in Lancaster : or, Hew
We Get Left."
Hoelcy, Morten and Hemer's minstrels
arc making a hit in San Francisce. Johnny
Morten of the old "Big Four." is the lead
ing comedian.
Anether new company, entitled M. B.
Leavitt's Giganteau minstrels, will start
out next fall under the management of
Kit .Clarke.
Thatcher & Kyman's minstrels in Phila.
dclphia have struck a bonanza in the bur
lesque of "All of It." This troupe will
visit France this year.
It is spoken of as among the possibili
ties that Nat Goodwin may travel neit
seaseu under J. II. Havcrly's manage
ment. Jennie Hughes has been engaged with
the D'Oyly Carte company te sing Eliza
in "Billce Tayler," opening next Monday
in Philadelphia.
J. H Haverly has purchased the piece
called " The Strategists," and will put it
upon the read shortly with a strengthened
company of his own.
A few days age Teny Dcuicr presented
his treasurer, Frank Hildreth, with a beau
tiful seal ring having the letter " H "set
in diamonds.
Jehn Sheridan, of " Fun en the Bristel"
troupe, is the husband of Alccia Jeurdau,
who died last .season while traveling with
the same party.
The "Strategists" have closed their
season and are new in New Yerk, Themas
J. Hind, who died a few days age, was a
member of the company and he appeared
here withthem.
One of the bloodhounds belonging te
Jayllial, and used by him in "Uncle
Tem's Cabin," fell under a moving train
in Watcrville, Me., a short time age and
was killed.
The Sparks brothers, Irish comedians,
with Teny Denier, were last seen here
with Maffif t & Bartholemew, several years
age. Little Tedd was here five years age
with Geerge L. Fex's pantomime com
pany. ' The Fun en the Bristel " party travel
in a special car, en the Rcadingjread ever
the Mishler circuit. Mr. Mishler is with
them. Nearly all of the troupes are fur
nished a car te themselves by this read
and it 5s found te be very convenient.
The Salsbury Troubaders celebrated
their fifteen hundredth performance of
"The Broek" at the Glebe theatre, Bos Bes Bos
eon, last Friday. Satiu pregrammes
were distributed. The receipts of the
week in Bosten were the largest they have
yet known, being within a few dollars of
eight thousand.
The Dramatic Ncae says : " Charlette
Thompson is new reported by the asso
ciated press te have lest in Teledo, O.,
'her jewel casket containing diamonds
valued at fifteen thousand dollars.' If
Miss Thompson ever possessed fifteen
thousand dollars' worth of riiamnnHs ti.e
fact would probably have created a geed
deal of interest in the minds of actresses
and actors te whom she has owed salary
for services due for a number of yeais
back."
A New Yerk reporter lias bean among
the photograph stands- where the pretty
and picturesque photographs of actresses
are sold, and finds that many of the old
footlight favorites have lest their held
upon the popular fancy. The variety
queens have been compelled te give way
te stage beauties of the mere "legitimate"
drama. Lydia Thompson, Pauline Mark
ham, Ada Harland, Rese Massey, Resina
Vokes, and ether favorites of a few years
age, have almost disappeared, because
nobody buys them any mere. Even Maud
Branscombp,ef whom 300 negatives are said
te have been made, in postures ranging
from simpering prettily in a .swing te
clinging desperately te across, is dropping
out of favor. Miss Andersen ' is new the
empress of the photograph stand. As the
Countess, in " Leve," she outsells every
body else ten te one, and in eight or ten
ether characters Ler "counterfeit present
ments" go off like het cakes. The report
er counted twenty-seven different aspects
m .miss Auaerseus beauty in one collec
tion. Among the few actresses who firm
ly held their places before the camera are
iiOtta, Kate Glaxten, Minnie Palmer Fan
ny Davenport and Maud Granger The
new ones who sell well are Adelaine
Detchen, Eleaner Carey, Catharine Lewis,
Effie Ellsler, Annie Pixley and Ada Oil
man. There has been only a moderate
demand for Sara Bernhardt.
She's CmbIbk .
A society fact of some interest is the in
tention of Mrs. Mackay, wife of the famous
California bonanza king of that name, te
quit Paris, where she has been residing
for a long while past, te take up her per
manent residence in New Yerk. Within
the past day or two, Mr. Mackay has pur
chased the well-known Stevens property in
Fifth avenue, net far from Central Park.
The price paid ler it is said te be about
three quarters of a million dollars. Mr.
Mackay is at present with his family in
France, but is expected te return with
them te New Yerk in the course of a few
weeks. He will stay here but for a brief
period, hewever.new enterprises in connec
tion with the Comstock mines requiring his
presence in Nevada. Mrs. Mackay is al
leged te have become verv much dis
pleased with the Parisians, chiefly because
of their refusal te accede te her patriotic
wish te have the Place de 1' Etoile illumi
nated, en the occasion of the memorable
visit of General Grant. The story is that
she offered te buy out the whole neighbor
hood, including the Arc de Triemphe, if
the Parisians would but say what they
would sell it for, but as she could net
strike a bargain she had te be content te
see only her own dwelling illuminated.
