LANCASTER DAILY lKTfiLLIGENGEU, SATURDAY, MARCH 5. 1881. Lancaster intelligence; SATURDAY EVENING. MAE. 6, 1881. TfcMglits en a Certain Heresy or the Orthodox. By tbe Authur el "Mrs. Hepkins." There are few things mere shocking te a reverent mind than the practice, se com mon among religious people, of jesting abent certain awful possibilities which their faith implies. As commonly applied the term "reverent mind" is supposed te belong only te these persons holding what is called "evangelical belief," but I am inclined te believe that the non-orthodox are often mere reverent than theso whose faith is of the straitest sort. Most of us can recall the names of clergymen whose doctrinal soundness was unques tioned, but whose occasional handling of sacred things was light and trifling te say the least. But te descend from the clergy te the evangelical laity, here we tee fre quently are met by a levity of expression that seems greatly at variance with their professed belief. Te many people the dogma of everlast ing punishment seems an abhorrent one, dishonoring te the Fatherhood of Ged and defeating the enes for which punishment is designed. Te the great majority of evangelical believers, however, this doc trine would appear, from the tenacity te which they cling te it, te be the keystone of their faith. Seme of them held the doctrine in a modified form, but the theory of actual endless bodily torment is still widely popular. Suppose, for the sake of argument, the truth of this dogma be admitted, hew should the holders of it conduct themselves? Strictly speaking, few persons believe themselces in much danger of undergoing this awful penalty. It is for these about them for whom they predict the destiny of eternal torment, if the life or belief of tlicae ethers is net what it should be. If any one possessed of human sympathy beheld another person in mortal danger the impulse would be te endeavor te save him from it. If wc beheld persons starting en a journey, the end of which we could foresee te be disaster and death, we should labor te dissuade them from It by aU means in our power. There would be no jests, no light words en ear tongues at Bach a moment. Hew is it in our relig ious life when we sec persons in imminent danger, as wc believe, of endless punish ment? Are religious people as serious iu such matters as the occasion demands ? I think net. According te their professions of faith many of these whom they meet in their daily walks arc deemed in this way, but the knowledge of this awful fact dis turbs the digestion of no evangelical be liever. Mere than this, the j-ueject. is often made the topic of mirth an ' -t. Xotleng since, while in a cenijuit' it: :thodex people belonging te the Lu.iuian and Re formed churches, I heaiu one of the num ber say jestingly te another that he would et "sent te a warm place when he died if he didn't take cate." A theological Biudent present tei.k up the jest and eon. tinned it m the same awful way, for such trifling is indeed awful if these who in dulge in it believed in the possibility re ferred te. In any case such jesting is cer tainly out of place. But it is common enough. Current conversation is full of allusions te a future place of punishment couched, as it .seems te me, it. a most ir reverent way. '-That het place," " th? region where they don't cover up the fires nights," etc., fcueli are some of the lerm.s iu which religious people allow themselves te speak iu regaid te a legion in the exist encc of which they .suppose themselves most firmly te believe. In regard te a doctrine like this no half way attitude is possible. Either we de believe it or wc de net. If wc believe iu endless punishment, cither physical or mental, than jesting upon such a matter cannot be harmless but sinful. If we de net believe in it, buck trilling is, at all events, misplaced. My own conclusion is that few of the professed adherents of this dogma sincerely believe it. If they de their jests upeu the possibilities it involves show an incomprehensible levity and a shameful indifference te eternal fate of se se many about them. Let us be honest and no longer dull our moral perceptions by intellectually assenting te a dogma at which our heart revolts, no longer say " I believe" when wc de net believe. Or, if wede held this doctrine, let us held in all seriousness and never for ene moment per mit ourselves te make its terrible possibil ities a theme for levity and for jesting which is something wei se than foolish. This Brandy has steed the tet for years, and hay never failed, as far a our experience extends, and we therefore give it the pieterence overall ether Brandies no matter with hew many law-breaking French titles they are branded. Onc-!eurth of the menev that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specilics would suffice te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or cases. In proof of the curative powers of Reigart's Old Brandy, IncaMset Dyspepsia, we can summon nuni bens of witnesses one case in particular we eite: A hard-working farmer had been aillicted with an exhaust Ive Dyspepsia ter a number of vears; his stomach would reject almost every kind of loed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly no appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict hi diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new, preached at times, and in his discourses ettcn declaimed earneslly against all kindsef strong drink. When advised te try Reigart's Old Braudy, In his case, he looked up with asienlsuuient, but alter hearing et Its weudcrlut ellccts in the eases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man. with a stomach capable of digesting anything which hejehese te cat. He still keens it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since lie has this medi cine lie has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A Pkaotisine Physiciaw. If. E.
