Ben Jonsen, in reference te the state
ment that " whatever Shakespeare
penned he never blotted out aline," re
plies : "I would he had blotted out a
thousand."
Dryden denounces the " lameness of
the plots, made up of some ridiculous, in
coherent story ;" declares that Shakspeare
" writes in many places below the dullest
writers of our or of any preceding age,"
and avers that the reader " will find in
every page either some solecism of speech
or some notorious flaw in sense."
Dr. Hepkins, a renowned New England
preacher, professed that he could find no
attraction in either Milen or Shakspeare.
Samuel Pepys accounted the play of
" Remee and Juliet" the worst that he
overheard;" ".Othelle" 'a mean thing,"
and " A Midsummer Night's Dream" the
most insipid, ridiculous play that I ever
saw in my life."
Lord "Shaftesbury speaks of Shak
spearc's " rude, unpolished style and an
tiquated phrase and wit."
Geerge II. once said : "I hear a great
deal of Shakespeare, but I cannot read
bim, he is such a bombast fellow."
Hume defines Shakespeare as "a dis dis dis
wronertioucd and misshapen giant
incapable of furnishing a preber enter
tainment te a refined or intelligent au
dience." Voltaire pronounced "Hamlet" "se
gross and barbarous a piece that it would
net be endured by the vilest population in
France and Italy."
Geerge III. remarked: "Was there
ever such stuff as Shakespeare ? Only one
must net say se. But what think you ?
What? Is there net sad stuff? What?
what?"
Even Byren disparages the bard of
Aven, thinks his plays " will have their
decline," ranks Pope above him, and ex
claims te his friend, Tem Moere, " Well,
after all, Tem, don't you think Shake
speare was something of a humbug ?"
Bciluement vs. Vandalism.
The city of Dayton, Ohie, with its
neighborhood, is blessed with one of the
most vigorous and useful horticultural
societies in the Union, at the same time
that the city suffers the intolerable annoy
ance of cattle and swine moving freely
through all its handsome streets. A strik
ing instance is here presented of refine
ment and vandalism together, in a large
city claiming taste and intelligence.- At
the January meeting of the horticultural
society at that place, President Ohmcr, in
bis address, justly remarked that the prac
tice was a disgrace te the cry, for which
it was reproached by the strangers who
visited. He knew of no ether city in the
land where such a nuisincc was allowed.
He himself, with his family, had a recent
narrow escape from being thrown from a
carriage by a large hog chased under it by
a deg. He alluded te the frequent dam
age done te the beautiful front yards of
handsome residences by the iugress of un
ruly cattle in the night trees, shrubs aud
flowers crushed and trodden under their
hoofs. Prof. Morgan spoke of dogs as an
equal nuisance and said there was no
ether city that had se many. Judge
Frank said that Mr. Clark had his het
beds tern te pieces by worthless dogs.
Werth Having.
The editor of the Cartcrsville, Ga., Ex
press states the case in this way : " There
is a little brown-eyed enthusiastic, high
spirited lady, who, after she has cooked
breakfast, cleared the things away, set the
house te rights, attends the call of the
bread wagon aud milked the cow, dens
her hat aud cloak, conies into this office,
yanks us out of the editorial easy chair,
pounces en the exchanges, amputates
every item of interest, staclcs them en the
copy-hook, grabs up a Fabcr, travels it
ever a quire of editor's manuscript paper,
removes her snowy upren. shoves up her
sleeves, grabs a stick and rule and sets it
all into type, reads the proof and corrects
every error. That's our wife, and she will
get her reward in heaven,"

2,000 BARRELS OF 'BECK AT A UKIiW
Just Completed Improvement nt Lauer's
Brewery Changes in Ventilation.
Improvements entailing, an expense of
$e,UuU nave just been completed at Laucr s
beer brewery, Reading. The fermenting
room, situate at the southwest corner of
the brewery, 70 by 50 feet in area, has
undergone a complete change in vcutila vcutila
tien. In this room arc a number of im
mense tubs, with a capacity te ferment
2,090 barrels of beer at a time, which re
quire a certain degree of temperature.
Immediately above the fermenting room
is the refrigerator, in which ice te the
depth of tweney-six feet is stored. The
fleer of this room is made et wrought iron
supported by beams and pillars of Phoenix
iron. Beneath the iron fleer is ene made of
corrugated galvanized iron, laid en sheets
thirty inches wide, having a fall of ten
inches, te each of which is attached a
wooden trough, which conveys the drip
ping of the ice te the reservoir below.
Twenty one hundred square feet of galvan
ized iron, weighing three tens, were used
in making this fleer. Frem the refrigera
ting room six galvanized pipes, ten inches
in diameter aud sixty-five feet high ascend
te the top of the building. Through these
pipes air is admitted te the room and
when desirable is passed through twenty
trap air holes te the fermenting room be
low. The room was formerly ventilated
by means of six pipes entering the build
ing en two sides, which answered their
purpose until the present large consump
tion of beer demanded better facilities.
