MONDAY BVBHINO, FEB. 21, WB1.
Tobacco.
The New Yera Market.
Tobacco Journal.
Compared with the previous week, the
present one was quiet, theuuh the sales,
ran up te an aggregate of 2,000 cases. It
is next te impossible te report correctly
what these sales consisted of. Sales of
nothing else but '79 Pennsylvania were
talked of, as if such stock as Connecticut,
State, Ohie and Wisconsin were net te be
obtained.
The prices that were paid for '79 Penn
sylvania astonished even the "eldest in
habitants" of Water-street. "Hew can
the manufacturers exist ?" is being asked.
Shrugs of shoulders and gesture , signify
ing balloon ascensions, arc the answers.
When it is taken into consideration that
running lets of '79 'Pennsylvania sold as
highastomake the wrappers cost above
45 cents, and the prices cigars are being
sold for, theic is some probability of as
censions in our balloon. These initiated
into the intiicacies of the manufacture of
cigars, though, held that the manufactur
ers, when compelled te pay hi" figures for
their seed leaf, get their satisfaction out of
the Havana by banishing it in as great a
proportion as requisite from their cigars.
Hew far this argument agrees with facts,
we will net discuss te-day. Certain it is
that the state of the leaf market is anema
leus.
The dehiie te purchase cverythiugseful
can only be explained liy the deuDltui con
dition of the '80 crop. "Packers are timid.
They examine tobacco emp after crop in
the different stile, and outside of the '80
New Yi.rk state and Housateuic, they
have se far bought with :i caution unusual.
Hew long these incisures will prevail it is
hard te tell. Tliey may te-morrow, hew
ever, rush out en masse te certain sections,
and legardless of while veins, ilea holes,
stem ret, and pelc-bui n, buy up thi leaf
at figures inconsistent with all calculations
and facts.
Our inability te secure substantiation of
the repens of sales of the various crops of
'79 in our m.nket this week, forces us te
refrain from particularizing the same.
Prices, llueuiih, did net dilfer from these
of the piecediug week.
Havana Maiket active:. Sales 1,100
bales. Jobbers were the main purchasers.
The aveibieu te the 'SO crop still continues,
and we tear will continue till the use
ful stock of the "79 is cither exhausted or
the prices of the '80 become lower.
G.iiih Kepmt.
Sales of seed leaf tobacco, reported by
J. S. Gans's Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers,
Nes. 84 and 80 Wall street, New Yerk, for
the week ending February 21, 1881: 900
cases 1879 Pennsylvania, fillers, 07c.;

A Pretest.
By the It v. Calvin S. Gerhard, et Columbia.
X. Y. Independent.
As a minister of the lie formed (Ger
man) church, I lcspcctfully pretest against
having the Reformed church placed into
line with these denominations among
whom there has been a manifest decrease
in the number of accessions during the
last few years, as was doue by Dr. Theo Theo
eore L. Cuyler, in an article en revivals,
published in the Independent, a few weeks
age. The statistical report for 18S0 gives the
following figures : Number of congrega
tions, 1,005 ; adult membership, 161,002 :
infant baptisms for the year 1881, 13,213 ;
adult baptisms, 1,096 ; additions by con
firmation, 9,113; by certificate and renew
ed profession of faith, 4,129. The losses
are as fellows : Excommunicated, 123 ;
names crasse, 1,503 ; dismissed by certifi
cate. 2,249 ; deaths, including infants,
4,591. This shows the number of accer.
siens by confiimatien alone te have hern
en an average about 7 te a congrevatien.
In 1879 the rate of increase was somewhat
larger ; in 1878 slightly less.- Any one
looking ever the statistical table will find
that the percentage of additions varies but
little from year te year, and that the
growth of this church has been gradual
and comparatively tegular throughout its
entire history in the United States.
The Reformed chinch has never been
much affected by widespread fluctuations
of religious interest or indifference. She
docs net lay any stress en these variations
of religious feeling; but has always in
sisted that true religion is mere a matter
of principle and Chtistian nurture in the
covenant of grace than of periodic activity
superinduced by special causes. She lays
down repentance toward Ged and faith in
the. Lord Jesus Christ as the conditions of
entrance into the full communion of the
church, and teaches that it is union with
the church, under the circumstances, that
unites us savingly with Jesus Christ. Her
people, therefore, become members of the
church largely from a sense of duty and
from a conviction of the necessity of a
childlike submission of the ordinances of
Christ for salvation, and de net believe
that they must first become Christians, and
then unite with the church for safe-keep
ing.
It is, perhaps, net for us te decide for
the general public whether this position is
correct or net : but this is the position of
the Reformed church, and in this way we
account for her steady and lcgnlai in
crease, which increase compares very fa
vorably with that of every ether Piotest Pietest
ant denomination in the country, since
within the last twenty-five years this
church has mere than doubled her mem
bership. a
