LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCE!, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12. 1881. vitficaster intelligencer. SATURDAY EVENING, FEB. 12, 1881. Thirty Years in Juil. Ami After that Time a Movement te Itclcase the Imprisoned Man. Mr. K. B. Stout, an aged citizen of Cin cinnati has left for Columbus te petition the governor for the pardon of Ferdinand Seitz, whom a jury of which Stout was a member sent te the penitentiary for life, thirty -three years age. Scitz was then a young man of 2e. lie had fallen in love with Kalriua Addam, a comely German gii I, en licitway from Germany here, and after their arrival asked the father for her hand. The old man refused. Seitz and the daughter pleaded in vain. Finally the father, te get 1 id of Seitz, urged him te go a short distance into the country te rent a farm. They went together. A few miles out the same afternoon, old Addam was found shot and his brains beaten out. An hour later Seitx was talking with some men near by when the Hies weie seen te cluster about his knees and thighs. The men suspected something wrong, and, forcing him te remove his outer garments, found his drawers stained with bleed beneath his dark t reuse rs. He was convicted en cir ciinivtautial evidence and sent te the peni tentiary for life. He refuted te confess, and the thirty-three years ha has been in prison he has constantly as-Mated bis inno cence. Of the judges, shciill' and officials that served in the ease all are dead save the vt-uer.ible Judge A. (!. A. Carter, who was then pre-e:tit:ng attorney. Seitz, who is new ueaily sixty, and lias spent considerably iii-i; than half of his life in the penitentiary, ;-. r."peried te be in ex cellent health, anil with prospects of leu years or mere of life. St. Valentine. The IVespecis ler the Amiiiat Visitation. Each season of the year possesses it own striking characteristics and is marked with festivities and indulgences peculiar te such pciieds. It is simply marvelous with what tenacity the people cling te cus toms and traditions in all ceuutiies, and under whatever condition they may hap pen te be placed. Neither arc any of them allowed te be overlooked, and the busi ness of catering te the public taste in rela tion te such is carefully piesccutcd. Just at the pit-sent time some of the store win dows in thiscity present a showy appear ance, decked out as they aie with valen tines of all descriptions from the crudeand gaudy allair, which is sold for a penny, te the moie elaborately ceustiucted article. with its kiei.t of imitation lace and cun ningly secicled verse of sentiment. The valentine season does net properly set in until next Monday, the 14th inst.. but the gaudy display of fancy pictures with .-entinicut.il met tecs and heiiihlc caricatures that am intended te convey the most wilting san-i-iii, have induced the girls and bey.t te anticipate the date, and tl:e-e missives have aheady begun te circulate through the mails. The post pest office clerks will have double work for a week te come.
