A Touching hici-tciit About a(-li'xt.ei'.
An incident of Kate Claxton's visit te
Easten last week painfully reminded these
who were witnesses of it that there arc
real sorrows in the life of an actress, while
it exhibited that "touch of nature which
makes the whole world kin '' Hearding
with Iter parents at the United States
hotel is a bright, gelilcn-haircil little girl
of about live years of ajje. About two
weeks age Kate Clax'ten (Mrs. Stevenson)
lest just such a little one, and laid away
the treasure of her life in her baby's grave.
When Miss Clax'ten sat in the dining room
of the United .States hotel, last Tuesday
morning, she watched every movement el
the child whesatatan opposite table, and
by and by the eyes, iixed se intently en
little Ethel, filled with tears, her emotion
became uncontrollable and she hastily left
the room. In a little while the child went
upstairs, and in the hall way the peer be
reaved mother was standing, heart hungry
for a smile and a kiss from the little one
whose bright loeksund prattle hail brought
back se forcibly the memory of her own
baby. She said, " Won't, you come
and kiss me, my dear '.'"' And, at
trarted by the eare.-sing tones of the
peer mother's voice, with the frank con
fidence of childhood Ethel ran te her
threw her arms about her neck and kissed
her. It was tee much for the sorely
wounded heart. The child was frightened
by the vehemence of l!ie passionate grief
she had awakened. She was gathered
into the arms of love, and held in such a
close embrace as if she who held her
would never let. her go. The peer lady
sobbed and rocked te and fro in the agony
of her great sorrow, and when friends of
the child and the actress, attracted by the
sobbing, came along the hall, she reluct
antly released the astonished little one
and tottered te her room. These who
witnessed the scene could net restrain their
tears. When Miss (Jlaxt en left the hotel
fihe asked the child te bid her "Geed bye,"
and she kissed her passionately and cried
and then went her way te play and
amuse the public again that night, "bear
ing a liUileng hunger in her heart."

Detroit Fii-e Prca.-.
The ether night ISiekels went home and
found his wife particularly retrospective.
She talked of the past with a tear, and
looked te the future with a sigh.
"Oh, by the way," said Hickels, as he

Solemon atid the HiacksuiHIi.
The story gees that, during the building
of Solemon's temple, that wise ruler de
cided te treat the artisans employed en his
famous edifice te a banquet. Wuile the
men were erajeyiug the geed things his
bounty had provided, Kinj: Solemon mov
ed about from table te table, endeavoring
te become better acqu.uitil.ecl with his
workmen. Te one he said :
"My friend, what is your trade?"
"A carpenter."
"And who makes your tools?"
"The b?acksmith,:'repltedthe carpenter.
Te another Solemon said :
"What is your trade?'' and the reply
was:
" A mason."
"And who makes your tools?"
"Tne blacksmith," replied the mason.
A third stated that he was a stone cutter,
and that the blacksmith also made his
tools. The fourth raau that King Solo Selo Sole
mon addressed was the blacksmith him
self. He was a powerful man with bared
arms, en which the muscles 'steed out ia
bold relief, seemingly almost as haid as
the metal he worked.
"And what is your trade, my gecd
man?" said the king.
"Blacksmith," laconically leplicd the
man of the anvil and sledge.
"And who makes your tools?"
"Make 'cm myself," said the black
smith. Whereupon King Solemon immediately
proclaimed him king of mechanics, be
cause he could net only make his own
tools, but all ether artisans were forced te
go te him te have their tools made.
A FOKTUXATK FKIGHT.
Hew a Yeung Lady' Voice wan Restore!
Ttireugu a Runaway Accident.
A few evenings age persons in Broad
way, Patcrsen, N. J., were startled at the
sight of the team attached te the passen
ger sleigh of the East Side horse car line
running away at a furious rate. The
sleigh had struck a bare spot or a stone in
the sticet, which gave it a jerk-that broke
off the iron belt holding the pole in pkice.
This left the horses attached only bjr the
traces, and the sleigh struck against their
heels and frightened them. The pole be
fhg loose, there was nothing te guide the
course of the sleigh, and it swayed from
side te side of the street, striking against
the curbstones. At Bridge street the
driver was thrown out, but he landed in a
snow drift and was net injured.
The horses kept en. It was about 9 :tfO
o'clock in the evening and the roadway
was comparatively clear, but there were
a geed many people en the sidewalk and
when they sflw that there were two ladies
in the sleigh there were many exclama
tions of horror, for it was thought they
could net escape alive. The ladies in the
sleigh weie the wife of ex-Mayer, Secrates
Tnttlcaud and his-stepdaughter, Miss
Mary Wcller. They did net knew at Hist
that the horses were running away but
wondered at the reckless driving of the
driver, whom they could net see, as 1:0
was separated from them by a canvas
screen. After a little time they perceived
that the hoi es were running oil", but could
net sec where they were going, nor could
they get out el the sleigh.
The runaway team dashed across Main
street, and continued down Broadway te
Mulberry sticet. The stables of the com
pany are near the corner, and the iierses
undertook te turn in there, but they were
going at tee rapid a gait, and slung the
sleigh around se that ii struck sideways
against the building en the corner, where
the top of the vehicle was partially tern
off and the horses were loosened from' the
sleigh. The shock threw the ladies forci
bly te one side, and they were both quite
seriously hurt. Miss Wcller was picked
up insensible, and did net recover con
sciousness for about two hours. She was
injured upon the head and arm. Mrs.
Tattle was hurt about the head. Beth
have since nearly recovered.
The recovery of Miss Wcller was accom
panied with a surprising result. Seme
years age she contracted a severe cold,
and entirely lest her voice. Every means
was tried te restore it, but in vain. Finally
a physician partially resleied her voice,
but although it hud considerable strength
it was unnatural, harsh and strained. Six
or seven months age Miss Wcller caught
another cold and again her voice was lest.
Ever .since she has been unable te speak
above a whisper. But as she recovered
from the effects of the runaway accident
above described, her voice began te return
and new it is as loud and strong as it ever
was, and jierfeetly clear in tone. The re
covery is attributed te flight.
Khakspeare and Hie Bible.
Xe ether author than Shakspcare shows
se much likeness te the Bible in his writ
ings. Many of his passages are curious
parallels, which show that the " Hard of
Aven " was familiar with the Sciiptures,
and drew from them many of his ideas.
The following are a few of them: Shak
spcare: " Itiide am I in my speech"
(Othelle, act 1, scene I!). Bible : "Though
I be rude in speech " f2d Cor. xi., (5.)
Shakspcare: "Shew his eyes ami grieve
his heart" (Macbeth, net -1, scene 1).
Bible : " Te consume thine eyes and te
grieve thine heart " (1st Samuel, ii., e,1).
Shakspcare : " Life's but a walking
shadeh " (Macbeth, act v., s. it). Bible :
" Man walketh in a vain show "' (Ps..
xxxix., II). Shakspcare : " We'll die with
harness en our back." (Macbeth, act v.,
sc. ii). Bible : ' Nicaiier lay dead in his
harness" (2 Mae. xv., 23). Shakspcare :
"Wee te that land that's governed by a
child " (Richard III., act ii., sc. '.',). Bible:
" Wee te thee, 0 laud, when thy king is a
