Leaf Tobacco.
THE NEW IOKK MARKET.
Seed Leaf and Havana for the Week end
ing January ''.
V. 9. Tobacco Journal.
It would be sheer nonsense or barefaced
untruth te claim ability te give a correct
statement of what was really sold in the
market. Much was sold. That we can
vouch for. Frem the mass of reports we
can estimate the Kales of the week te have
been ever 2,500 cases. If the many state
ments made were based upon anything
like fact, there inuat have been a general
ferocious attack by purchasers upon '79
Pennsylvania this week. Nearly every
one is credited with having bought noth
ing but that crop. Regarding figures,
buyer must have been totally indifferent.
Hundreds of cases of State, Wisconsin and
Ohie, net te sayany thing about '"boarder"
tobaccos, were ruthlessly robbed of their
proper names and gained publicity as '79
Pennsylvania. This is net te say that
sellers represented these goods te be Penn
sylvania, but buyers did net object te
have their purchases of cheap leaf called
'79 Pennsylvania, aud sellers net alone did
net trouble themselves te contradict it,
but holders of '79 Pennsylvania used the
exaggerated and ( mildly termed ) trans
formed statements (mostly made by"wild
cat" leaf brokers) te create the impression
that '79 Pennsylvania was galloping out
or the market and that prices for what
would be left were bound te rise enor
mously. That there was an increased demand for
'79 Pennsylvania is indisputable. It is
also undeniable that its prices have some
what advanced. Fer the past two mouths
we have cautioned our readers against en
tertaining the idea that a fall in figures for
this tobacco could occur. Packers of it
never expected te yee it m.trkcted at any
thing less than 25 cents for fine running
lets. What the United States Tobacco
Journal did in dissolving that expecta
tion, and thereby bringing these tobaccos
within the profitable reach of jobbers and
manufacturers, need net be leiteratcd.
But wheu this tobacco had sunk te reason
able figures, the outlook became such (es
pecially by reason of the iudifl'ercnt if net
thoroughly bad state of the '80 Pa. crop)
that no further reduction in figures could
be expected. This paper then plainly told
its readers se. As the season advances
fine '79 Pennsylvania will become scarce,
and naturally holders are entitled te larger
figures ; Trat the se vigorously and pub
licly declared idea of holders that it will
reach fancy figures is unwarranted. The
calculations are that net one-half of the
'79 Pennsylvania has as yet gene into the
hands of manufacturers. There is an
abundance of fine stock in the '79 Connec
ticut ; and as te the stock for low grade
cigars, there exists an extraordinary sur
plus. Fer the reasons above given we re
frain from specifying the sales of the
week. Figures for all ether tobaccos than
'79 Pennsylvania remain unchanged. The
fact that one let of 100 cases el the latter
sold at 23 cents, warrants its being spe
cially mentioned. Fine running lets of the
same crop may be had at 19 te 20 cents ;
medium lets range from 15 cents and up
ward, and low are in abundance at 12
cents aud upward.

Advices from San Franci.-eua have it
that Peunsylvni.i wrapper. are feai fully
off color ; cases that ought te yield 15,000
wrappers will only yield 8, 000 or 1c-r. The
reason there aic no large sales of wrappers
is en account of the color. The price of
leaf is likely te remain high all the year,
as manufacturers will have te use a geed
deal mere of it than they would if it weie
geed.
