New Wrinkles In Grape Grewing.
Gcrniantewu Telegraph.
Truly there is no account for tastes or
methods. "We have a statement from the
San 3latee (Cal.) Journal, relative te grape
growing en the "Alpine Kaiiche,' which
ignores pruning and cultivating of the
grape, as it "cause tee great a growth of
weed, thus drawing away from the fruit
bearing temlencj," in the tirst place ; and
in the second place the "pruning causes
the vines te have a high, straight stem,
thus elevating the fruit from the ground
into the cool, moist touches of the fogs at
times; while letting vines run caused them
te spread out flat en the ground, and the
grapes lying immediately upon the warm
earth, and in contact with it, are thus hhcl
tered from the advec influences operating
higher above, and were thus fully devel
oped and ripened.''
This is one side. The ether side we find
in the Gardener's Mantldy, from a corres
pondent, who says that the Catawba grape
is net "played out." as is generally as
serted, but that the failure in growing it
is because we don't knew hew te de it,
and, that " it is useless te try and get geed
fruit from it without the vine is trained
high enough te have the fiuit at least ten
feet from the ground ;"' hencs when se
trained it gives plenty of geed Iruit.
Perhaps the variety of tne grape and the
latitude may have all te de with it, as in
the case with many ether fruits, and hence
the best way te succeed with grapes and
ether fruits is te experiment ; and when
having found out which arc the right ways
te de it, te held fast te them. We all
knew hew it with pears, apples, plum?,

Spare the Crew.
Staunton (Vn.) Spectator,
Seme days age, near Newtown, a young
lady shot and killed eighteen crews in
three shots. Tin; lirst fire killed nine, the
second .siv and the third three. Winches
ter JVeic.
What did she kill the crews for? Xe
birds, net even the crews, should be
killed. They are the best friends the
farniei s have, and none should be killed
at any time. We think there, should
be a ueuer.il law against the killing of
any birds, even the iraiuc birds. If there
weie no birds, m ten years time there
weuid be no crops of grain. The insects
would pi event it. Protect the biids of
all kinds that the fanners may raise geed
crops of grain. We aie friends of the
farmers, and theieieifi wish te protect
their interests by pietccting the birds that
kill the insects which destroy their crops.
Allew no hints te be killed. Farmers that
undei stand their interests, and recognize
the true value f birds, will net allow any
te be killed upon their farms. If the biids
were mere numcieus the farmers would be
me:." prosperous. Though elder countries
and mere populous, there arc many mere
bird--, in England and en the continent of
Europe than in America.
Tiie Splint in the Herse.
Ccrin.inlewn Telegraph.
It is v. ell known te all owners of horses
that there is what may be called a tumor
which at lirst is callous and afterwards be
comes bony, which sometimes grows upon
the horse's leg. the base resting upon the
line of union of the shank-bone and the
splint-bone, which frequently causes the
hoisetego lame indeed almost invari
ably when it invades the knee-joint, and
which is frequently beyond the reach of
the farrier te cure or remove. A short
time age, however, a farmer, who appear
ed te be familiar with the ailment of the
horse, informed us that he used a remedy
for it which was completely successful
with him ; and having obtained the in
gradients in the belief that the ointment
might be of :-ervice in similar cases, we
append them as fellows :
Equal parts of
Oil of amber,
Oil of spike,
Spirits of turpentine.
Mix well and apply twice a day, and
grease with a little fresh or unsalted lard ;
or, what is better, the marrow fiem un
cooked beef-hone. It will make the parts
sere and it will i mi a little, but each
one must be his own indue in the fre
quency of the application after it becomes
somewhat sere.
"Hew .'.re Yi-u My Old I'licnd?"
Aekcd a bright looking man. "Oh! I feel
miserable, I'm bilious and can't eat. ami my
back i--e lame I can't work." "Why in the
werlii don't you take Kidney-Wert; that's
what, I take when I am out et seits. and it al
ways keens me in perfect tune. Jlv doctor
recommends it teraliMich lieubles." Kidney Kidney
Wen is the sure cure for biliousness and con
