KILLED IN TOKK COUNTY.
A Resident or May town Struck ey a Train.
In Yerk county, en Tuesday, en the line
of the Northern Central railroad company,
the second section of the day express
struck and instantly killed Jehn Green
leaf, a resident of Maytown, Lancaster
county. The deceased was a day laborer,
about 47 years of age, and had been spend
ing a few days with his brother, Philip
Greenleaf, ia Coderus township. At nine
o'clock a. m. he left the residence of his
brother, stating that he was going te
Seven Valley, and if he did net return in
the evening the family would kuew that
he had gene te his home. It is the sup
position that he had visited Seven Valley,
and had taken the railroad by which te
walk back te his brother's, and was walk
ing en the track en the south side of the
bridge when he was evei taken by the day
express, which was about au hour late.
He was shuck in the centre of the back ;
several ribs were bieken, his skull frac
tured, au ugly gash cut in his neck and
threat, beside several ether miner cuts aud
bruises.
Tlie body was precipitated down a steep
embankment of several feet, the train
promptly stepped, and backed te the scene,
wlteti t-everal men went te his aid, hut
feuud life entirely extinct. The body be
ing taken te the almshouse an inquest was
empaneled, and inquired into the death
of Jehn Greenleaf. The engineer of the
diy express, .las. Akehuisr, was sworn
and stated that he saw the deceased upon
the track about 15 or 20 feet ahead of the
engine, en the outside of the track, the
smoke at the time being se thick as te
prevent him fiem seeing farther. He was
running at about 35 miles per hour and
could net step his train in time te prevent
running ever him. He gave the proper
signals of approach, at the crossing a short
distance above, but the deceased was either
walking or standing just ahead of the en
gine, evidently unconscious of its approach.
They weic pas-Jug a long freight train at
the time, and the steam aud smoke issuing
from the btidge through which it had
just passed, obscured the vision greatly.
Tlie fu em in, Jehn T. Reilly, the
budge tender, Geerge Buck, and Philip
Greenleaf wetc also sworn, and substan
tiated the statement of the engineer.
Frem the testimony it appears that the
deceased had become bewildered somewhat
at tlie passing train, and failed te take no
lice of the approach of the train. After
deliberation the jury returned a verdict
that the said Jehn Greenleaf met his death
from injuries received by being stmek en
the hick iv the engine of the second sec
tien of the day express going southward,
and the employees of the said railroad aie
in no ways ic-pensible nor blamablc for
the accident. The Itedy was taken by

The iictv warehouses of the Messrs.

Fer the puipese of dr ing them out as

in the basement (which contain a great

a luncheon for her husband. Knocking
loudly at the deer and receiving
no answer she made her way te the base

She raised an alarm and some of Mr.

from stove ga. The usual remedies were
applied and in the com se of two or three
benis Mr. Rittenhouse was able te gote

Last night burlais broke into the stove,
tinware and plumbing store of Shertzcr,
lluinphreville & Kiefler, and lobbed the
safe of about $150 or $1C0 in cash, consist
ing of geld, silver and bank notes. The
burglats effected an entrance, into the
stoic room by fereing off, with a jimmy,
the wooden shutter ceveiing the upper
pat t of the deer. The upper part of the
doei is a sash filled with glass except one
pane, which is filled with tin. This tin
pane the burglars removed, aud reaching
through the opening thus made it was an
easy matter for them te push back the
belt anil remove the iron bar which fast
ened tlie deer en the inside. Once in ihe
stete the burglats appear te have geno at
once te the safe, au old-fashioned one, and
te have picked it w itli a false key, as the
safe is net in any way damaged. Frem
the safe the thieves took, as stated above,
all the money therein, amounting te ever
$150. They then visited a glass show-case
near the front of the store, took out a
plated tablespoon and a block-tin dipper,
broke them in two, and finding they were
net silver made no further depredation,
unless, pcihaps, they may have taken a
few pocket knhes from the case. They
then retired by the same way they entered
taking with them a tin box in which some
of the money was kept in the safe and
throwing the empty box away near the
end of the let. They left behind them a
stump of a candle they had used te give
them light dining their operations. The
entire fient of the stoic is glass aud if the
watchman or any one else had passed
while the thieves were inside they would
scarce have failed te discover them. But
