SATURDAY EVENING, JAM. 15, 1881.
Winter Care ef Fwls.
While writing, the thermemeter stands
8 below zero. On the morning before the
mercury marked 10 below. In places
within a distance of less than a mile, the
temperature is much lower, where the lo
cation is in a hollow. Such cold weather
generally comes once or twice every win
ter. Fer this emergency every careful
person has prepared be."erehand. During
the few previous weeks, when the weather
'might be termed moderate beside that
which we arc at present experiencing, the
fowls have been comfortable, enjoying
their out-deer run each day at the warm
est portion. The gi eund being uncovered,
they have gathered grass and gravel, and
helped themselves te drink, at the regular
watering places of the barnyard stock, re
turning early te their warm roosting
places. Tlie wise peulterer has prepared
for any emergency, and the fowls are as
safe as new, when the deer is closed at
night, as in the warmer weather. The
house has been previously furnished with
drinking vessels, nest boxes, and every ap
pliance of comfort beneath a southern ex
posure of glass.
The poultry keeper should, with the
rising of the sun, go with fresh feed te see
whether there arc auy frosted combs. If
there are they should have immediate at
tention before thawing. Frosting may be
easily discerned by the white appearance.
Avoid touching or bruising the frozen
flesh, but catch the fowl and breathe
gently en it until the ice comes out, after
which dress with olive oil, care being
taken net te wet the feathers. De net re
move te a steve, but allow the bird te re
main in the same place. As the sun
cenn' up and tiie fowl stirs around, the
bleed will circulate, and the thawing is
less painful when the ice conies en the
outside. There will seldom be a case se
extreme as this, with the careful attend
ant, and iii quarters that are reasonably
comfortable. If fowls are accustomed
te the outside air each day, they will
endure quite severe cold without suffering.
But if fowls arc placed in confinement
under glass covers at the first approach of
cold weather, they become tender. The
combs and wattles are forced te a greater
size, and hence the danger of frost in the
len-r winter nightg, when the thermometer
drops suddenly below zero. I have found
it the better way te keep the fowls accus
tomed te the atmosphere as much as pos
sible without suffering. In this manner
they co.ne into laving without much forc
ing, anil are robust.
Aside from the combs and wattles, the
Brown Leghorns are the hardiest and most
profitable breed, both for eggs and flesh.
They will endure the greatest degree of
cold without injury, if duly trained te it,
and trivc the greatest quantity of eggs
with the least feed and care. They are
bright and lively and every mouthful of
feed tells en them. With the exception of
exhibition birds, it is better te breed for
low ciiitibs and acclimate te the cold.
Side by side with the Whites, th Browns
will excel, they will endure mere hardships
and yield greater profits en the same keep.
Fowls should net be allowed te drink in
frigid atmospheres. They cannot de
this with safety te the combs and wattles
except in the warmest portion of the day.
Of course daily exposure is a drawback te
their laying, but is mere advantageous te
their health. In cold weather give scraps
and fatty substances, together with the
whole corn, as these are heat-giviug sub
stauces, and cicate warmth of body. If
fowls are kept in comfort and thrift
through the cold wave, they will keep in
profit, but they must have strict care.
